Is it just me or...., by Neate Michael on May 7, 2012 14:46:06 GMT 1, Is it a bit slow in here these days?
I remember a few years ago, and there would be a page and a half of for sale posts go up each day....
Has the credit crunch hit the forum?
Are our walls now all full and we love each and every bit of art we own?
Just wonderin'....

Is it just me or...., by redfred on May 7, 2012 14:53:26 GMT 1, To me it seemed to change the last time it was reorganised splitting for sale/wanted/urban art sections as opposed to being all mixed together, you used to be able to visit just one section but now you are skipping about.

Is it just me or...., by Deleted on May 7, 2012 15:03:55 GMT 1, Street art is now murals, Stik has replaced Banksy as the main talking point and getting your kids to create a stencil is the new rock n'roll. Does that cover it?

With popularity it's lost some of the edgyness it had. Same feeling as seeing a band get popular, and rueing the day that you could see them in a small cosy room rather than a huge stadium. But street art is not all murals. Had a good wander round London on Saturday, and there's plenty of good street art still to be had. I take your point about kids. Fwiw, I don't get my kid to do it, he does it cos he loves it. If sticking up pics on here is the wrong place to do it, fair enough, but I tend to believe that encouraging kids to paint, whatever the medium, is a good thing. They are the next generation of street painters (maybe). My lad enjoys the encouragement he's recueved from artists and others on here. There's plenty of threads on here that I have no interest in. I tend to just ignore them. Nontheless I respect your opinion dd.

The your artwork section should be reinstated imo

Is it just me or...., by Deleted on May 7, 2012 17:47:49 GMT 1, It's stating the obvious to say that the credit crunch has hit the way in which we buy/sell art and sometimes the forum can be bit slow. My walls however are full of art I love and the stuff on the walls is staying on the walls for a very long time. I give all my art to my children that I buy now. I have some pieces from tha past which i could sell or use to trade and probably will. but I literally not only have no space on my walls for any more art. i have no space to store what isn't on my walls and thats my not my style any more. I only buy if I love the work. Sometimes you get things home and it doesn't quite work, but the only piece of art I am plan to commission this year is a paiting of my daughter(who missed out on the family portrait, but being in Mums tummy). Although. i can't help myself where Jago is concerned. I have a Jago at a friends house who's baby sitting it for me, until I can move a few bits and bobs and find some space. Also bought a huge Jago recently and ended up selling straight away at the price I paid to a good friend. It was about 5 x's the size I thought it was. So I think there are a few factors, but for me the main reason people don't post on the forum any more, is money and that fact the can't flip a print(as easily) as they used to. Moved on to other things no doubt, but its not the forums loss really. its just weeded out some of the people only interested in it for the money. i was spending way too much time on here and although I don't like to think of it in these terms it was probably because I felt I was missing out on a no brainer. I personally don't want to be up at 6am in the morning and going to bed at 2am every night. talking about art. I'd rather be enjoying what I have, my kids, family, friends, art, music, cricket and 'The Gas', but thats a life term and not an enjoyable experience. This forum still has great people, great art and great threads. its just not as busy. that suits me.

Is it just me or...., by daveart on May 7, 2012 19:31:27 GMT 1, i agree and see two angles that impact my buying and use of the forum.
- most sales are now 'buy it now' priced on ebay at the very top end of the realistic price range. i totally get it from a sellers point of view. not complaining. but it was a lot more fun when there were tons of low starting price auctions going on and you could buy stuff and hang it without losing sleep over the price.
- Banksy forum.. and no Banksy art and any that gets out in the last few years causes a huge mess with everyone getting up tight and then the price runs up to $7000 USD or something .. really.. how much stuff can you 'collect' at $7000 USD a shot. How many of you would have ever bought your first Banksy if the buy in was 7000USD? .. guessing not many. so i guess this is in the victim of the success category. sure id love to collect warhols..but .. buying one piece of art every 15 years isnt that fun is it. (assuming i could even buy one every 15 years)
I still check this place every day. but i dont buy as much as i used to and wish there was still more low edition sub $500 art to be had that looked great.. could be hung for a year and then traded out for somewhere near the $500 value so you can try something new .. currently looking for a low edition or original hush and even those prices are north of 7000USD at galleries. again, hard to be a collector.. and not very fun talking about stuff you cannot reasonably afford.

This point really hits home with me. There are only a few artists that are "within my reach" pricing wise at the moment and generally new work starts at 5000$USD. Its hard to get excited about something you can't collect. Good post mate.

I know plenty of artists who charge loads less than this sort of cash, if you only look at Big name Gallaries thats what you'll get shop around find the next Neate, Parla, Banksy, or whoever before they charge ยฃ500. thats alot of the fun for me isI don't dream of owning orignal Banksy canvases etc, Parlas(although what I'd do for a neate. So I look around and find the best I can afford and I consider myself to have a great collection and only a few of ther artists have charged more than ยฃ5k for work in the past and thats not work I own.

Is it just me or...., by Deleted on May 8, 2012 0:11:31 GMT 1, Heres examples of work that cost me less than ยฃ500 all originals. Most much less. IMO patient is the key, years ago I was getting 2/3 tubes or parcels a days through my door or it felt like that ;-). Now I pretty much pick up anything I buy. Which isn;t much. These may not be youur cuppa, but I love them all. Georgia Cox self portrait ยฃ300
Vincent Brown(In a secret postcard for ยฃ50
CuriousGeorge ยฃ50
SPQR 5th Man(my favorite work of art ยฃ115)
Adam Smith Poor Baby $300
Rich T Lion ยฃ170 ish in an auction(its not owned by me now) Beejoir LV CHild agian not mine now(but original prices were ยฃ500 I believe)
SPQR-Noses against Glass under ยฃ100
I could go on all night, maybe I haven't grabbed the wrong end of the stick, but great art (and too me these examples are fantastic) doesn't start at $5000.

Is it just me or...., by Deleted on May 8, 2012 1:31:15 GMT 1, It is clear that with popularity this forum lost some quality. Though, if you keep looking around outside, and n the web, there is still a lot of exciting stuff to see! For me development of artists as remi/rough, dicy, anthony sneed, the jr & parla coรถp and all those walls from miami last summer are still worth it!
Buying wise: only a couple of prints can get me excited, originals are absolutely the way to go. Most of the time they are surprisingly priced and the difference in quality is amazing. A room filled with prints has a totaly different feeling to a room with a couple, even less, ogs.

Is it just me or...., by Deleted on May 8, 2012 1:39:25 GMT 1, We may hate to admit it, so we won't, but there's no money in it anymore. Now the price reflects that of the secondary, save for the odd Dolk and Stik you have to buy what you like and if urban art taught us one thing it's when everything's cheap you can buy everything and sell off what you dislike. Now? Well you're stuck with it so either develop a critique of art or spend loads and deal direct with galleries full stop.
I dream one day to have an intelligent critical conversation of art work here where people don't get upset, nor seek validation for the way they behave, it's asking a lot but as the greed dissipates and we're left the few wanting to understand the wreckage around us, it may, just maybe possible.

This
I like artists that provoke a little bit, make you think, pull your leg, ... But nowadays the only difference between most street artists and regular artists is that street artists had a few works on the streets before they sign a deal with a gallery.
I see some really interesting street artists (Imbue-Mobstr-Pablo Delgado-...) not getting enough attention, and I see some guys that did 5 paste-ups in their backyard (or do one work on the street every 6 months and promote the living shit out of it) who are the next big thing now. Makes me lose interest

see the gorilla with mask thread or whatever it's called, when pow posted the picture on their website loads of people started checking out the forum.

Is it just me or...., by iamzero on May 9, 2012 0:13:15 GMT 1, With being relatively new to this collecting lark might I ask have the more affordable pieces you speak about always then been traded for roughly double to cost price once sold out or has this become a recent trait? It seems an easy way for certain high profile forum members to make money within a few weeks. Not wishing to provoke a right or wrong debate but just a question as to has it always been this way or was there time when forum members genuinely helped each other out without exploiting the money side?

Totally agree !! Remember when the guy who sold a Seen at fair price and suddenly it changed to "I want to get the most of it"... Many here have this mentality.
So true, like last week, I send an email to an unknown/little known artist who do great doodle that I really like... I ask for prices of original, A4 size, and was told that he used to sell them before at small price (I guess 20-30 GPB). Gallery price is now 150 GBP ! Same for Nihalani, I sent him an email to find out if he has the print sold two years ago at 1xRUN at 60 USD, answer is yes he still have one at 300 USD
