Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by kazzazz on Sept 7, 2011 1:53:23 GMT 1, Hi,
Was wondering for a bit of advice really. I have been lucky enough to organise a commission piece but now have to make the decision on what material to have it done on. I know it may be hard without seeing mock ups etc but was just seeing if anyone has had previous experiences and the difference that you may get with the end product?
Any help or advice is appreciated.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by Phear Loathing on Sept 7, 2011 6:29:02 GMT 1, artist?
I would ask them which they prefer as artist to work on. What most of their 'big' pieces are on....
If they don't say, my vote goes to metal.
artist?

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by jusdeep on Sept 7, 2011 8:34:01 GMT 1, I have pieces on both but it would definitely depend on the medium they use, their style and of course their preference (as above). Wood can add to a piece, showing the grain or a pre-printed pattern through the artwork making it more gritty. For an example I would prefer a Xenz on metal and a C215 on wood, but if it's a rusty old sign and the artwork compliments the material then all change. A clue to the artist would certainly help.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by kazzazz on Sept 7, 2011 11:13:50 GMT 1, The artist is Miss Bugs. The image they have mocked up has a modern feel to it so i am thinking metal would look quite cool....however they have indicated that wood will add more of a raw feel to the image. Ive been trying to decide for a few days now but its a tough one. The funny thing is i have also asked their opinion and think they are also split with one preferring wood and the other preferring metal. Im sure either will look great but both would have a slight different feel to it.
I suppose i have always thought having a special piece produced on metal seems quite cool but when speaking to others who have had originals on wood they also love them? Hmm!

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by jusdeep on Sept 7, 2011 13:57:42 GMT 1, I'd go for wood with MB. I kinda find their pieces on metal a little too clinical and there's always the risk of scratching.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by Lunch Special on Sept 7, 2011 16:20:01 GMT 1, think of the artist and the relation of the image to the medium you desire to choose... maybe find something in your home of sentimental value the misses hates but you hang on to for dear life.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by Sacked... on Sept 7, 2011 18:09:20 GMT 1, I agree with jusdeep,I have seen a few MBs on metal that have scratches or have had the corners bumped and i expect hat sort of thing is difficult to get restored.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by Phear Loathing on Sept 7, 2011 18:32:35 GMT 1, I had a feeling it was MB. I would go with metal. I have three metals from them and would go that medium again any day of the week. In comparing the metal works to the works I have seen on wood the colors seem much more vivid on the metal.
no brainer imo.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by Cardiff on Sept 7, 2011 19:17:10 GMT 1, Great pieces Peacepig and Shootagain...I went for wood on this even though I wanted a "metallic"/grayish background. The photo doesn't show it, but the circles/eyes have metallic flakes in the paint...best of both worlds I guess.
Bottom line...I don't think you can go wrong! Good luck and please post pics of the finished piece.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by kazzazz on Sept 8, 2011 2:26:24 GMT 1, Well its in the final stages of mock up so just a few tweaks but defo looking at having the more vivid brighter colours on the piece.....so think I am starting to lean towards metal.
A few people have mentioned about scratches on the metal too.....think if thats the way i decide i will be taking it directly to get it all framed up to hopefully avoid this.
Love the pieces that have been posted up.....all look amazing. With these did you all have the idea first of the sort of thing you wanted or was it more of a case of they producing something totally original and maybe tweaking it slightly?

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by maroom on Sept 8, 2011 6:53:37 GMT 1, Not seen this one before - it looks fantastic
I agree with the majority of comments on here that metal would probablt suit MB best.
However here's something on wood to give you another comparison.

The colours are really bright and the overall effect is great. Here is a closer look (without a flash as the varnish picks it up too much!)
What did you go for in the end?

Get one of each!
If it were me and I couldn't have both I would leave it to the artist to decide. Tell them to do what ever they think would be better. I think the more freedom you give them the better the outcome.

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by kazzazz on Sept 11, 2011 18:47:18 GMT 1, Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave an opinion etc on this thread. Ive decided to go with metal as the medium. Was a tough decision but having spent a long time looking at the image over the last week or so i think the bright colours etc will look great on the metal.
Thanks for everyones help and advice once again.....will be posting pictures up when its all finished too......getting excited now!

Commission Pieces - Metal? FINISHED!!!, by kazzazz on Oct 27, 2011 15:45:23 GMT 1, Its been a little while but my Miss Bugs OG finally arrived today....fresh out the packaging I couldn't help take some pictures to post. Will get it nicely framed too so will post more pictures when its up on the wall.
The piece is called 'Day Trip To London, Not Disneyland'......on metal. Exactly the sort of thing I asked for....a mix between the early work of Miss Bugs and the recent snub nose style. Pictures do not do it justice as in person you can see all the different materials used and the colours are much brighter.....you can also see exposed metal coming through the image too which is really cool.
Hope you guys approve......and if you don't, I love it anyway. Thanks for all your help in the build up too.
