Haggling With Galleries...., by dodge on Dec 4, 2007 21:01:05 GMT 1, I have been thinking about buying a print from a gallery and was wondering about the protocol on haggling. All of my previous prints have been either bought online from POW etc or ebay.
Has anybody ever haggled with a gallery? If so, how much did you get knocked off the asking price?
Cheers in advance for the advice ;D

Haggling With Galleries...., by mydeaddogwontwoof on Dec 4, 2007 21:28:22 GMT 1, Haggling is all part of the fun of buying art, but try not to piss on your chips, if you really love a piece, chances are someone else loves it more, so slapping too low an offer on the table may ultimately result in you losing out on something you really want for the sake of a few quid, (especially frustrating if its value were to rise and more than cover that few quid you were debating spending in the first place!), its very much a personal thing putting a value on art, and boils down to how much you have to have it!

Haggling With Galleries...., by dodge on Dec 4, 2007 22:19:07 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice guys. Just bought a new car and haggled a great deal on it. I realise print buying is a lot different but I feel I have been bitten by the bug... ha ha. To get 10% off would be nice but it's a fair point about somebody else wanting it too. i don't want to miss out for the sake of ยฃ120!
Even I am not that cheap ;D

Haggling With Galleries...., by stereoface on Dec 4, 2007 22:23:37 GMT 1, I thought haggling with galleries only worked in third world countries. You should see how many chicklets i got for cheap last time I went to Mexico. Those 8 year old kids are total pushovers ... they have no haggling skills.

Haggling With Galleries...., by scavos on Dec 5, 2007 1:36:40 GMT 1, Haggle all the way I say. Sometimes pays off, others not. All part of the fun. Also great to get to know the people working at the galleries too. Some top people out there. Frankie is a diamond for example. When's his site going live btw? C'mon dude, sort it out! It's a great time to buy right now so plenty of bargains to be had.

Haggling With Galleries...., by nickc on Dec 5, 2007 13:09:44 GMT 1, I remember haggling when I bought my first two Banksy prints in a gallery. Managed to get about 6% of in the end which I was happy enough with. Plus, the gallery did alright because they sold two of them so everyone wins. Therein lies the moral. Negotiate away but always make sure that the gallery is as happy as you are because you will, more than likely, get the same deal next time you go in whereas if you p1ss them off they won't be so kind.

Haggling With Galleries...., by dmandpenfold on Dec 5, 2007 16:13:38 GMT 1, that's pretty poor for a sale in the GBP1,300 range, they should have at least given you delilvery charges up front, it's not as if they cant get a quote on them

thats what I thought especially as it was frickin obvious that it's not somewhere I can travel to easily, otherwise I'd have bought the damn thing in person!

no offence but if you can afford to drop 1.3K on a piece of art, ยฃ60 shipping should not bother you.

i frequently buy from galleries and it is normal to get charged direct from the shipping company they use without being told exactly how much up front by the gallery. you always have to add in extra amounts when buying art especially from overseas, VAT, handling fees, import fees, postage etc.
