2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by alsbabar on Feb 4, 2008 9:00:37 GMT 1, i dont think anyone would disagree with you type, but art at the end of the day is subjective and amongst all hustle, bustle and F5ing, what this hype has done is brought knowledge and appreciation of Urban art to a wider audience, first time collectors, serious collectors and even galleries.
With that in mind, I myself during 2007 have seen beyond the Faile, Micallef and Banksy euphoria, the likes of Harrington, Haring, Neate and Denning who border Contemporary art, give me more excitement and a desire in owning their works.
Its natural process of evolution, the weak will die, the strong will live on, but also there will be others coming through the ranks and in the test of time will live or die.
Now back to my F5ing waiting for POW to open

2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by flypitcher on Feb 4, 2008 22:19:13 GMT 1, I think the rush of people trying to sell Banksy's signals the games up. But there is hope emerging markets from CHINA and CUBA. This is where the long term money is going to be in my humblee opinion. But anyone with a girl and balloon. Hold onto it. THis will stand the test of time. PS It now takes at least 6 months for LAZ to give provenance. But you can't blame him. Simple economics of supply, demand and equilibrium point. If he gave everyone it immediately then the market would flop. You gotta take your hat off to Laz he is a very shrewd guy and I think will go on to be richer than anybody out of his current peers.

Not many artists who stand the test of time actually have sell out shows and certain there prints dont sell out within an hour. I don't know any other genre of art where you can put up 200+ prints, by B grade artists, (no offense chi chi and aiko) and have them sell out instantly. What does it mean? I could speculate that it's mania and a fad but make up your own opinion. It's just depressing to me when there's so much good art that goes unsold because it's not 'urban art'

2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by hollywouldifhecoul on Feb 5, 2008 6:24:18 GMT 1, The best read I've had on this forum yet. Very much enjoyed as I've been asking myself these questions for quite some time. Seems I should stay off the Buy/Sell threads more often.

2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by fartofthestate on Feb 5, 2008 7:24:14 GMT 1, How the fucking hell can you grade an artist? If you want to grade an artist on skill then Banksy would come pretty damn low IMO, he's got a good sense of humor and gets up a fair bit on the street but there are plenty more with skill.
If you grade an artist on their ability to make money then thats terribly sad but in all truth thats what it seems to be about.
As always, if you like the piece of art, its going to hang on your wall and you couldn't give a rats ass if its worth nada tomorrow then your fine. If your in it 100% for the cash, then what ever happens its your on bloody fault, stocks and shares baby stocks and shares.

2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by pezlow on Feb 5, 2008 7:40:40 GMT 1, I for one can't wait to see the upcoming Neate, Micallef and Faile shows
Ok, I know about the adam and ron show but when and where are the Micallef and Faile shows you are referring to?

2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by fergy on Feb 5, 2008 10:29:18 GMT 1, Follow the art...and not the money! As the Time Out article implied - huge editions of a print don't always stand the test of time, if you are looking at it as a financial investment that is. Saying that - I think Banksy will be to the urban thing what the Pistols were to punk - i.e. an household name that will last. The rest (mainly the stencil copycats) and even Sadly the early 70's pioneers like Gee Vaucher and Blek Le Rat will merge in to obscurity as far as the general public are concerned.

2008 - The year the shite will sink - Get over it!, by kingleopald on Feb 5, 2008 10:41:21 GMT 1, Theres no question banksy's got staying power. Don't think people quite understand. He IS the next big thing. His canvasses just aint gonna suddenly go from a squillion quid to bargain bucket two for a tenner... However his hype has created a dustbowl from which lessr talents have done rather nicely. Once the dust settles a few will keep up with the convoy, others will run out of gas. Prper artistic talent will shine..

On that note I think its great how the Banksy affect has allowed artists who really are tallented to have an opportunity to shine. Would we all have heard of Micallef, Neate and the others if their hadn't been a focus on Banksy?
