Cauty - Anyone heard this?, by jonpud on Jun 12, 2007 17:58:49 GMT 1, There appears to be a feeling that Cauty's work (prints) are not in demand anymore, this appears to be true but don't sell unless you have to.
If the whispers are true then JC is no longer going to produce any more prints, only original works selling for k's! This will surely push the value up of his earlier prints? Anyone heard similar?

Cauty - Anyone heard this?, by pelle on Jun 12, 2007 18:02:16 GMT 1, I think the quality of Cauty's prints will insure that they stay at a fairly modest price. To put it nicely.

That's a rather broad statement, wouldn't you say?
I have a "Hearts and Minds" (ed. of 35) which looks killer. Some people have complained about the print quality, suggesting they are inkjet prints, which isn't true at all (from what I understand). Apparently, the actual process is called "Pigment Printing" and the result is a print that is virtually impervious to fading of any kind as no inks or dyes are used.
Again, some people complained that the images appeared grainy (that is, regarding the Operation Magic Kingdom series), which surprised me to say the least. What was expected? A high-resolution glossy poster? The treatment makes a somewhat washed-out look commonly seen in satellite feeds of digital video cameras--the kind of image we get from "live" coverage of our joint middle east debacles.
All in all, the overall effect is stunning, and the print is very well executed. Granted, it has a very different feeling from the hand-made quality of a screenprint. But then again, they are totally different beasts. To me, its the same thing as complaining that a sculpture isn't a cheeseburger.
I knew what I was buying, and the print is outstanding IMHO. I'm sure many other Cauty owners feel the same.

Cauty - Anyone heard this?, by pelle on Jun 12, 2007 22:28:31 GMT 1, I haven't seen the new prints, as I was so put off by the old ones I saw - they did look a lot like inkjets to me.
Not exactly what I expected from a so called art print. But then again they weren't expensive at the time and if you know what you're buying, and you like it, then fair enough.

Any chance of elaborating on the whispers you have heard and who whispered?

I found this about pigment printing:
"Digital inkjet printing has seen a surge in the use of the pigment ink as ink sets have been refined to be compatible with the latest in high-resolution inkjet technology."
Looks like it's an inkjet print using pigment ink. Which still just makes it an inkjet print in my book, although as you say it doesn't fade as easily...

Cauty - Anyone heard this?, by dog byte on Jun 12, 2007 23:01:07 GMT 1, as far as i know the good large size ink jet printers can be set to use either dye or uv (pigment) inks....
some ink jets using the pigment ink do not get the same quality as using the standard dye but the benefit is the pigment will not fade like dye ink...

Cauty - Anyone heard this?, by menace2sobriety on Jun 12, 2007 23:52:00 GMT 1, I would kind of have to agree with you here pelle. Certainly dont want to slag off Mr Cauty as i think he has some great concepts and is basically a bit of a legend, but when i opened my dead dad print for the first time i wasnt all that impressed. Then again it was only ยฃ30

Cauty - Anyone heard this?, by tadghostal on Jun 13, 2007 0:20:05 GMT 1, pelle and dogbyte--
I just asked some art friend nerds about what you referenced and according to them pigment printing is considered on par with giclee. Which means, you're right--it is a glorified inkjet print.
To which I said, "I'll be damned."
Although I still love the image, it now has the tainted feel of a Hirst to it. Since when did computers produce anything considered "art?" (its a rhetorical question, btw).
