Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by Agent Provocateur on Mar 31, 2009 14:43:46 GMT 1,
Thought I'd start a new thread as I haven't in a while! Watch out it's a cheery one ;D
With the world financial meltdown, banks being bailed out/going bust, bank executives getting huge salaries/bonuses, the mortgage market plunging, unemployment going through the roof, businesses going to the wall, Banksy prices dropping(!)... London is hosting the G20 meeting of world leaders to discuss how they can(not) work together to solve these problems.
Demonstrations are planned on the newly renamed Financial Fools Day to put the peoples voice across. With the police cancelling leave and drafting in thousands more constables from other areas it looks like it will be an interesting day!
The last year or so has been turbulent to say the least, unprecedented financial turmoil leading to a global recession.
Because of the amazing times we're living through and the possible mayhem on April 1 I thought it might be good to have a thread to discuss, rant, agree, disagree, ignore or dismiss what is happening and what people are saying.
I've got me fingers crossed Banksy has something up his sleeve for tomorrow as well ;D (I am an optimist!). If anyone else has been creative on this issue it'd be great to see some images...
Mine's above, a simple one layer stencil (I know a lot of people don't like this style of piece, especially by a new forum artist, but I thought I'd post anyway ) that hopefully gets my message across.
I await abuse ;D

Do you mean the people saying "there's going to be violence" and stating that "we're ready and up for it" ?
If so you should be aware that the Police don't like being called rioting idiots

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by manchestermike on Mar 31, 2009 16:07:33 GMT 1, I'll be at ClimateCamp on Bishopsgate. Far from being a 'rioting idiot' (thanks mm - are you a journalist by any chance? ;D ) I'm peaceful but have the right to protest in a peaceful manner - just fed up with being everyone being f**ked over by banks, bankers, the Government etc.
There will be more than enough rioting idiots there to make up for the peaceful ones though. Half the people there won't have a clue what they're protesting about and will be just looking for a fight... hence all the windows in the City being boarded up etc... I wonder whose money will go on the clean up costs, the same government that is "fucking them over" pays, out of our taxes... They're as bad as each other

The police in many cases cause the trouble. We should pay them not to.

Agreed, in some cases they don't help... however when you have days like tomorrow you've got to be glad they're about

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by manchestermike on Mar 31, 2009 16:29:04 GMT 1, however when you have days like tomorrow you've got to be glad they're about Yep, gotta say drafitng loads of 'county' coppers in, and briefing them about how everyone in London is armed really helps stuff. See the story today in the press about some kids who were spraying graffiti in Plymouth and were then found to have 2/3 replica weapons - all of a sudden they're 'planning on attending the G20' media/police/govt build the hype based on no fact
Of course it will be hyped... anything like this is. But what would I rather, no police about or not enough and things getting out of hand, or police there to keep things in check.
Maybe those who work in the area can help out too: www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article515384.ece

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by manchestermike on Mar 31, 2009 16:41:12 GMT 1, from the last Climate Camp blog: “Several vans advanced on the main gate and a stand off ensued. During this distraction, large numbers of police attacked the rear gate, smashing windows of vehicles park at the rear gate. Police dog units were posted while at least one vehicle was towed away. Many officers wore no shoulder numbers and refused to identify themselves or show warrant cards as they ordered people around. Several arrests were made as campers rushed to the scene.
The standoff at both gates is still taking place over an hour later and observers report more riot vans being dispatched to the camp. Batons were used to attack campers and a line of riot cops advanced. Medics were rushed to scene as reports of campers being attacked with pepper spray came in. Several more arrests were made and ambulances have been called to attend injuries.”i'd rather have no Police than Police who break the law themselves mike...
Without being funny, that's the word of one group... just like you can't believe everything you read in the papers, you can't just take this at face value either. Every side in something like this makes use of propaganda. Seemingly from this the police just attacked with no cause or reason at all, I find that harder to believe than they had reasoning, but that is conveniently left out of the above.
No police in a situation like tomorrow would be a recipe for disaster, of course there are a couple of bad eggs there, every organisation has a few... but the vast majority will be there to keep the peace as best they can. If there were none there tomorrow I dread to think what state things would be left in!

Latest developments involve the police harassment of the press, especially photographers and cameramen. Obviously when they are breaking the law themselves and cracking a few skulls they don't want it to be seen/photographed/filmed.

I've not been happy with this government for a while. I'll be voting against them and hopefully seeing them voted out in the next election. That is the only way they understand, by losing their power.
I've no problem with peaceful protest that doesn't disrupt innocent parties. It's when it escalates from that into something else that I have a problem with it.

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by kingleopald on Mar 31, 2009 17:21:08 GMT 1, Funny how everyone is talking about how tomorrow will be a 'riot'. What's interesting is that the press has gradually been building this up since early last week to the point where everyone now expects there to be violence tomorrow.
Yet again, protesters have a bad name before they even start protesting and the press have set the scene so if it does kick off the police will be excused for storming in like some quasi-military storm trooping force and cracking a few heads. As per usual that'll grab the headlines and Middle England will be able to get back to quietly whingeing at home about the way things are.
It's not a crime to be angry and we have a right to voice that anger. I don't know how we became so complacent in this country and why protest has become so demonised.
The sad thing is that violence tomorrow gives the politicians/bankers a convenient excuse to ignore the message - but then what else is new? (1 million + marching peacefully through London against the Iraq war in 2003 anyone?...).

Maybe so... Having experienced police in other parts of the World first hand as a football supporter and from reports of others I'd say that our police are one of the least heavy handed police forces anywhere.

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by manchestermike on Mar 31, 2009 17:32:54 GMT 1, I agree mm with that, the CRS and Guardia Civil i have experience of are one helluva lot worse. However, the UK force is a lot more violent towards those who are exercising their democratic right to protest (not sure you can compare that to hooliganism tbh) now than even 2 years ago, heavy-handedness is now the routine, whereas before it was sporadic...
I'm not, just the day to day policing (where there was no hooliganism) of football fans can be outrageous throughout Europe. The same holds true for civil disobedience in the majority of mainland Europe, their police will be much more vociferous in stopping protests than ours are. Maybe heavy-handedness is increasing over here (even becoming the routine) but that is us falling in line with Europe, and I'm not condoning that, but again maybe heavy-handedness has to increase due to the nature of the protests
Not having a go at anyone's democratic right to protest, but surely when this gets in the way of people's democratic right to work, travel etc then there is an issue.

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by Pupster on Mar 31, 2009 18:50:52 GMT 1, Some very valid comments made here, good post AP..!
I have friends who are coppers (dont hold that against them ;D ;D ) and know for a fact that a small minority of them will be eager for a riot and WILL antagonise the situation if they can get to put their training into practice.. The majority however will just want things to go smoothly....
Same can be said of those protesting... the question is how many people feel so strongly about their views that they are willing to fight for them???

Can't believe what I read - you've got mates on the force who will antagonise a situation so they can establish if their training has been effective? I know many Police and all they wish for is an easy life.
Right to peaceful protest I wholeheartedly agree with but the fact of the matter is that there will always be a very small minority with another agenda and the press have played a huge part to ensure that every no nothing tosspot with an axe to grind will rock up tomorrow at the expense of business and people going about their day to day business.
Mike's spot on about the attitude of the Spanish military police and others being less tolerant than our own old bill and this should be remembered......I'm a little old school and think if you play with fire......
There is always the option of speakers corner to voice your opinion, no one's forced to demonstrate with 'x' 1000'2 of others.

Bizarre.
Not long ago you were all over here like a rash with your short selling tips and advising how to make profit from misery now you want to encourage an anti-capitalist riot.
You're part of the problem not the solution and believe me there's no "happy rioting".
We just play pranks on people, here in the States. We call it April Fools Day. But, I'll be watching for all the foreign mayhem. Chuck a molotov cocktail(or 2) for me. Happy rioting! Bizarre. Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by chrisps303 on Apr 1, 2009 10:35:10 GMT 1, from the last Climate Camp blog: “Several vans advanced on the main gate and a stand off ensued.
This used to happen when i was still going to free parties.
Coppers with no numbers on their shoulders and swinging battons wildly trying to crack heads and refusing to give names or numbers when asked.
