Swatch has joined forces with GREMS to create Street Club, the Club watch for 2009/10 and the latest product of the Swatch + Art connection.
GREMS is the young French street painter, rapper, hip hop artist and designer who made a name for himself helping art escape from exclusive galleries to the streets. A man of many colours and voices, GREMS takes his art to the people, turning brick walls, panel trucks, subways, clothing and anything else he can find into highly visible and accessible public canvases. With street smarts, guile and an artist's sensibility for colour, form and materials, he turns public space into an open air gallery and personal identity into a public statement. His artistic signature features colourful clusters of hand-drawn signs and lettering, bold graphics and graffiti. Instantly recognizable, his cartoon figures slide through the streets with style and grace, heads plugged into a musical universe fused with hip hop sound and fury. A rebel with a cause, GREMS takes street painting to a higher level, expanding his canvases from walls to subways; showroom windows and branded fashion gearรwitness Street Club, the 2009/10 Swatch The Club Watch.
Street Club (SUJZ111) features a matt black folio strap that carries a bold montage of hand-drawn coloured labels (In the Club, I love Swatch, Club Watch, Swatch the Club, Swatch and GREMS) in a bewildering and inventive variety of styles. The Club Watch 2009/10 is a Swatch Jelly in Jelly with a solid black plastic case and black dial. Its wildly colourful array of tags, graphic signs and signals is inspired by the diverse community of Swatch The Club members around the world. Provocative, creative, trendy and fashionable all at once, the design expresses Club members' expansive joie de vivre. Both the solid black plastic case and the dial extend the canvas from the strap and serve as a black background for GREMS' graffiti, graphics and street-art style. With Street Club, Swatch has introduced a new technology. Known as 'glass decoration', this ingenious technological advance allows GREMS to use the inside surface of the curved watch glass as an additional layer for his art - a transparent canvas that adds depth to the design. Thus the combined efforts of GREMS and Swatch merge all the visible surfaces of Street Club into a single street painting that stretches from the strap across the case and dial to the glass that protects it.
The dial itself is the centre of attention of this fascinating Club Watch 2009/10. The black dial serves as a high-contrast ground for a signature GREMS design: a red and grey panel truck that looks much like an ice-cream wagon or a street-vendor's colourful store on wheels. The grey side panels open up to reveal a colourful array of enticing goods - food, drinks and who knows what else! A driver at the wheel has a grey and white megaphone mounted on his cab - all the better to blast a message to customers in the neighbourhood. Arching over the truck, above and below (and printed on the inside surface of the glass), are coloured signs: 'SWATCH' and 'IN THE CLUB', reinforcing the wrap-around message that Street Club sends to Swatch The Club Members.
With all the art there's little room left over for Arabic numerals or indices, and GREMS leaves it up to the user to figure out what time it is. Helpfully, Swatch adds white hour and minute hands and a yellow seconds hand to mark the time. It's a typically refreshing move from the art and technology lovers at Swatch, and a perfect expression of how Swatch sees the world.

Don't work for them but know a bit about it. They have already had many artist designed watches including Keith Haring, Sam Francis, Mimmo Rotella (think Faile), Marc Kostabi, Tadanori Yoko, etc etc as well as film directors, musicians and fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood.
Don't assume that they are only now jumping on the bandwagon :
