Timed print releases - good or bad, by cfellowes on Jan 26, 2010 11:03:29 GMT 1, There seem to be more and more timed print releases recently. Whilst on one hand, it does give more of us the opportunity to buy the prints, it does also usually result in there being a significantly larger edition size. Meanwhile, the print prices seem to be staying the same.
This is clearly an absolute bonanza for the artists. Would you pay the same for a print from an edition of 50 versus an edition of 250 for the same artist? Whilst none of us are (should) be buying prints to resell, part of the personal value of buying a print is knowing that it is quite limited.
What do you guys think? I don't think that this new style of print release does much for the attraction of prints, and perhaps makes them closer to poster releases of which there may be thousands.

Timed print releases - good or bad, by cfellowes on Jan 26, 2010 11:12:09 GMT 1, OK, put simply, timed print releases usually result in much higher edition sizes.
Would you usually pay as much for a high edition size as a small one?
Would you be as attracted to buying a print with a high edition size as a small one?

Timed print releases - good or bad, by rdl81 on Jan 26, 2010 11:19:33 GMT 1, it depends how long the timed release is for if POW do print release for bansky say 1hr....i am sure they would prob sell around 2.5k web technology permiting maybe less if they kept price the same as would reduce flippers and only proper collectors would go for it...i think they should give it a go

Timed print releases - good or bad, by Daniel Silk on Jan 26, 2010 12:35:27 GMT 1, I don't think its a good idea for an artist to do releases like that too often floods the market a bit. Once a year depending on the size of their fan base sounds about right, but any more than that and they would run out of customers in a few years.

Timed print releases - good or bad, by wimpy on Jan 26, 2010 12:57:07 GMT 1, Perfect example: Micallef's GIWTBB.
Loved that release. Really flooded the market quickly, killed the hype a tad because too many people tried to flip them, and now all of his stuff is much easier to obtain.

Timed print releases - good or bad, by Happy Shopper on Jan 26, 2010 13:33:35 GMT 1, It's OK the way Red Propeller do it. Cheap price, cheaper printing than usual (I think!?). Doesn't always result in very high editions. I think the Guy Denning edition turned out smaller than Russ Mills!

I agree. Ultimately, we would like them to retain / appreciate in their value, which happens as a result of a limited supply.
What I meant was that we shouldn't be buying to flip them.

There is a difference between a timed release and flooding the market with too many large limited editions, especially if its on the same day! E.G Micallef. Which has gone down in the history books of street art as a wrong decision for artist and collector. A timed release is usually cheaper to produce and manufacture, because print numbers sold are higher and the quality of the print is lower, most of them being ink jet copies. A timed release would not work for any print that had been hand worked by the artist or any extensive screen printing used, E.G 28 colours hand pulled! Personally i don't see any problem with them, as it gives the fans a chance to have the print on their wall, without affecting the artists market of limited edition prints.
