Window mount or float mount, by wave on Mar 16, 2010 14:38:02 GMT 1, At very long last, finished all the replastering in my flat so getting majority of my collection finally framed. Very excited.
Question is, i'm having a bit of trouble deciding whether to window mount or float mount. For example, Nola looks great with a window mount but S&S looks the nuts float mounted because of the deckled edge.
Do you think it's okay to have a mix or should you be consistent throughout.
Any opinions/advice much appreciated

Window mount or float mount, by lifeonwalls on Mar 16, 2010 14:45:45 GMT 1, ^ agreed. Mix it up a bit, don't feel "obligated" to frame each print in a similar fashion. As you stated, deckled edges look great when the print is floated.
Consistency is overrated IMO. :-)

Window mount or float mount, by silvermyn on Mar 16, 2010 14:54:56 GMT 1, I always tend to float mount in order to ensure that any fading due to light is consistent accross the whole of the print. I think you can reduce UV exposure significantly but you can't illimiate 100% with glass.

Window mount or float mount, by Martin DK on Mar 16, 2010 15:05:06 GMT 1, If it was me, just paint the walls white, and frame each print they way they look the best. Colored frames, black frames, mounts, no mounts it all good

totally agree, mine are framed how I think the print should be treated.

This is a nice reason to float.
As far as "showing deckle edges"... I don't get it. What is the fascination with it? Do you really think the deckle edge adds to the effect of one of these screenprints? If so, I think you already made your decision.

Window mount or float mount, by wave on Mar 16, 2010 17:55:45 GMT 1, Cheers for all the feedback folks, you've helped me make up my mind. Gonna try and mix it up completely i think.
Was doing my head in a bit as donuts for eg is a very similar style of Banksy to S&S so was thinking they should they be framed the same but guess it doesn't really matter and gives more individuality to the piece.
Currently thinking of spraying a large overly ornate frame pink for my donuts. It may very well be a framing disaster so watch this space.

That's very odd indeed. Can't think why this would be the case. I've seen large prints floated and rippled too. I'd guess the issue is more likely to be forcing prints flat than related to the framing per say. This has never been an issue for me in any case.

i dont know why its happened but on my pop tart which is float its rippled and on my empire state is window its rippled. the empire state wasnt in a tube for long at all.
VLH, flags and all the dface are window and no problems with them
MFM has offered to have a look to see what he can do but the logistics are a bit of a bitch...
just a bit annoying so thats why my big float small window rule has come into force.

Window mount or float mount, by curiousgeorge on Mar 17, 2010 11:30:43 GMT 1, Changes in temperature and humidity are the most likely cause of ripples.Bit of movement of window mounts is ok in my book, it shows the paper is adapting to it's surroundings, some framers will allow for movement when framing a print.Extreme ripples might be down to the print being too secure and not having a room for flex/movement thus the paper cannot move anywhere.
I love mylar corners, set out correctly they can accommodate changes of 5-10mm in each direction

One of mine (in a mount) is rapidly turning from slightly rippled to badly rippled. Is it something that can be easily fixed by a decent framer/restorer if I take it out of the frame now?

Window mount or float mount, by G-Man on Mar 19, 2010 16:02:09 GMT 1, Not a fan of floating, although it looks good to see the deckled edges I always am disappointed with the ripples
I window mounted my NBG and looks great
Its a personal choice but I do agree with the above comments about mixing it all up, the frame has to suit the image not the other porints on the wall, I have none in the same frame and mount combo...
Nice decisions to have to make though...!
