Random thoughts - 4 years on., by pezlow on Jan 11, 2011 11:53:40 GMT 1, Believe it or not is has now been 4 years since I registered for this forum and nearly 5 years since I joined the Banksy Ebay forum now sadly defunct. So I thought it might be an opportune time to share some random thoughts. These are just personal thoughts, apologies for rambling and you don't have to read it! Firstly concerning this forum and without going into the politics behind it, it is such a shame that many of the older members of the forum don't post here anymore. It is undoubtedly a poorer place without them and their knowledge. It seems a life time ago since I was a moderator on this forum. Secondly this four year period has seen a significant rise in the popularity of Banksy and a limited number of other street artists whilst we have seen many others rise and spectacularly fall. Looking at Banksy first it doesn't seem like 4 years ago that Silver Flag was released at Santas Ghetto and was available until around lunchtime on the day of release, with people just walking in off the street to buy one. That certainly wouldn't happen now. But of course any online release was still craziness. I remember the total frustration of the morons release, having a sepia in my cart at least three time before the POW server ground to halt, and with it my prospects of getting a sepia. But I did get an unsigned at 6am the following morning, still framed and on my wall today. Then there was Trolleys, Stop and Search and Gold Flag. All released within 3 months of each other and all proudly on my wall - my most productive 3 months collecting Banksy ever. What comes next? Oh yes Cans. Possibly the best advertisement for street art there has ever been. A genuinely life affirming experience seeing all sorts of people including kids with their parents, going down there and spraying stencils in the public graffiti area - mixing it with the street art legends. I had broken my shoulder at the time and was in a sling and I remember meeting McNuts down there who had broken his ankle. We must have looked a right pair. Do I get the timing right when I think Nola (where I blinked and missed the release) and then the POW open day comes next and the last time I got a banksy from source - VLH. Four hours queueing to get lottery tickets to be entered for a chance to get the right to buy a print - big lol. Was the whole forum at that event? It seemed that way. G-Man was at the front of the queue getting himself a free t-shirt and relaying to us at the back the other print releases POW had in store.... Since then there has been of course plenty of great banksy street pieces, some of which I have been lucky enough to see in the flesh, and of course the bristol museum show which I went to with the family. A very rewarding experience and a fantastic show. That show made plenty of new converts to banksy including my dad - who I persuaded to go and see it and came out saying that he loved it. But of course it isn't all about Banksy and remarkably over the 4 years of being on this forum I think my favourite street artists haven't changed much. Top five was then and still remains - Banksy, Faile, Neate, Eine and Swoon. Of course there are many other artists I have admired greatly over the last four years and bought - Shepard Fairey, Invader, Mr Jago, Ripper1331, The London Police, Beejoir, AMP, JR, Steve Powers, Herakut, Borf, Blu, Sam3, Bast, Jonah, Stef, Grafter, Dirquo and others. I like to think I still have room for new discoveries and, perhaps a bit later than others, am really warming to the talents of Vermin recently. But I think the top five will always be those five. Without being melodramatic about it I do think we lived through the development of whole new art movement and I consider it an absolute privilege to have been a (small) part of it. Over the four years we've seen many artists ride crests of waves for a time and then drop from grace just as quickly. Dan Baldwin, Ian Francis, Anthony Micallef and Beejoir are four examples of very talented artists who have been lorded to the heavens by the forum with all the attendant hype and price hikes only for it to crash again. Perhaps a lesson for us all not to get too carried away. So Mr B it's been a ride which I have thoroughly enjoyed - your art has made me laugh, made me think and made me lots of new friends, Long may it continue.

I agree Pez, there are a lot of good members who left or were banned and the forum is poorer for that.

Random thoughts - 4 years on., by Dellboyy on Jan 11, 2011 13:36:42 GMT 1, Yup got to say my Francis prints are still some of my favourite... if i didn't already own three, i'd be snapping up more at the prices they go for. Plus, worth noting that the 'fall from grace' thing only really applies to their prints, Francis originals are still stupidly expensive and difficult to get hold of. Way above my price range anyway!
Great post btw!

There were a few differences of opinions between some of them and the mods, then some just left as the scene decended into Flippers heaven, others justed went west, the way that all mythical creatures do

I think the continued rise of international stars such as OS Gemeos, Barry McGee and KAWs should be noted.

Totally agree that it's a shame to have lost so many of the old contributors.

Random thoughts - 4 years on., by Deleted on Jan 11, 2011 16:40:47 GMT 1, It has been fun, and I dread to think what art i would have on my walls without the last few years, and all probably in clip frames.
It has reminded me that when my dissillusionment with music set in, something else to get fired-up about took over. Something with passion, politics, creativity and not about the money.
Early Santa's Ghetto's - feeling as though being let in on a secret.
And don't forget the Mutate Britain exhibitions.
Looking forward to the next four years as there's some inspirational artists out there.

The upcoming 'Art in the Streets' exhibition at MOCA LA could be amazing. Although the fact that Deitch commissioned and then buffed a mural by Blu in the run up to the show doesn't exactly bode well.

Random thoughts - 4 years on., by Wearology on Jan 11, 2011 18:44:50 GMT 1, I remember buying a Banksy print on Ebay from a so called respected former forum member back in 07 and than posting a photo of it on here - to later find out that from a current forum member that my new prized posession was actually a back door print. I was so pissed off and decided to try and sell it on EBAY just a few months later and than realized the power of our forum. You guys ganged up on me called me every name in the book and than sabatogued my EBAY listing. I was so scared of the angry mob from the UK that I changed my forum name and still have the back door print on my wall. If that happened now I would tell you all to F off and realize that the same guy who sold me the print was probably the same guy bad mouthing me on the forum and sabatoguing my EBAY listing. Ah the good old days when I was known as the annoying American - now I am known as the annoying assistant moderator American.

Random thoughts - 4 years on., by pezlow on Jan 11, 2011 20:04:25 GMT 1, Happy days, what were your three fondest moments Pez, and your all time favourite moment?
Good question but difficult to answer. I have many favorite moments but I think I enjoyed most the herakut show and the urban art awards at the Leonard street gallery. I know eventually the awards became a bit of a joke but back then they were great fun. I remember I had an amazing day. I left work early and went to the opening of the laz shop. There I met Anthony micallef and had a good chat with him - very nice bloke. Then on to Leonard street where I met up with numerous forumites, presented an award, got pissed with Matt small, Carlo, stuey, Mcnuts, fpr, wk, clareshops etc etc.
There have been some great threads on here too. I would regularly read the forum and burst out laughing which was a bit embarrassing at the office.
I'm not going to pretend that everything was rosy all the time. There were a fair share of bad apples as there were now. On one occasion we had to get the police involved when a charity auction went horribly wrong.

i agree that it would be nice to see some of the old faces about on here and their knowledge is priceless but there you go, these things happen.
the Cans Festival would be my absolute highlight, just a perfect day and within a week much of the work gone over - a great event, with nothing for sale, no agenda other than promoting street art and one that will live long in the memory for me. my only regret was the massive increase in values, not only did it corrupt the scene for a while but i'm honest enough to admit it corrupted my thinking too, there have been some amazing pieces i've let go because their value was too hard to ignore when money was tight - if they were at or near cost they'd have stayed put and i'd be enjoying them still today.
you live and learn eh?

I would add as highlights going to every Upfest with my kids, going to the tunnel showing of ettgs, and meeting lots of great people at previews. Many of the highlights you have listed I share with you. I have even met one of my best friends through this site - you know who you are! [mind you, I avoid telling people I met him on an internet site, cos that sounds just too wierd!] I too miss some of the old members, a lot of whom were very helpful and much more knowledgable than I. On the downside, I am not too keen on the bickering and bitching, but its inevitable I guess. Thanks for all the reminders Pezlow. c

Jeremy and Ian became photographers, Stuey published Beyond the Street, Gary with Untitled, Shellshocked with Auc sab, Banksy Tours.. I remember Mike coming on and asking if we thought a Blek show would be interesting back in 06 then he set up BRP..the lost goes on. a LOT of good things came out of that little grouping.. including this forum. And apart from the all the bullshit, the heart of the scene is still beating strongly and in a lot of cases.. is still ethical and idealistic.

With the demise of WK I think some of the old members are back on here under new names or just lurking. It's a bit of a drug this place and hard to give up / quit.
Some great moments mentioned in the posts above and as 'Marte' states above, I remember Mike posting about a Blek show quite a few years ago.
Hats off to those who have turned their passion into a career - well done and how i would love to give up my crappy job to work in an area I love.
Personally, I would like to see the end of multiple forum names and more honesty amongst members & respect to each other. It's a forum. A meeting place for those with the same interests to chat and discuss with other like minded people.

Hmm, I remember that. You later tried to palm the print off on me. I wouldn't have known that was you if you hadn't mentioned it. Nice.
