The first one gave me a price of £160 for the applause, mounted with glass, but is it best to get UV glass? OH the friendly fire was quoted at £83 for mount and frame
The next one, a bit of a shabby place might i add gave me a quote of £90 to frame the applause.
The smug woman in the shop said UV glass was for picasso originals, museum type art etc...
Whats your views?

My view is not to consider giving the smug woman any of your prints to frame. If it is possible that your framed prints will be exposed to direct sunlight once hung you should seriously consider stumping for the UV resistant glass. Museum quality UV resistant glass is also clearer than standard glass giving a noticeable improvement for the extra price paid. I have never thought twice about it, all of my prints are behind either perspex or UV glass.

My applause was 220 with all acid free mounts and non reflective uv glass. (see get yer banksy's out) The non reflective glass works really well on Applause due to the nature of the print (its lots of dots).
i'm sure you can get it cheaper but its worth doing it properly.

when i went to the framers last week they tried my prints behind several different types of glass - anti-reflective glass looked absoluty terrible and made the image look faded and dirty and the framers said it was pretty much a joke (in the framing world) It may look ok on mainly white images but not on everything you own.

Just curious why no one has mentioned anything other than glass.

A lot of people will say that plexi-glass is the only option for framing posters, and that glass should be avoided at all costs. I think this is definatley an over-simplistic view. While plexi-glass has the significant advantage of being shatter resistant, in order to get the same preservation properties as similar specification glass you will have to spend a lot more. In my opinion as long as the frame is well made, and as long as it is securely attached to the wall where you wish to display it, then there shouldn't be any risk of damage to the poster.
Framing posters that are larger than the standard US 1-sheet or UK Quad becomes very difficult unless you use plexi-glass, and UV protection might have to be sacrificed in order to keep the cost of framing down. In that situation then you have to think even more carefully about where your poster will be situated. But as a general rule I would say that whether it is glass or plexi-glass, spend the most that you can on getting the best material that you can afford, as it will keep your collection safe for many years to come.
To give you an idea of cost, a major framing supplier in the UK quoted me £15 for a 1-sheet sized sheet of UV conservation glass. The equivalent UV plexi-glass from the same manufacturer was £300!. This sounds rediculous but it's true. It really is THAT expensive for high quality UV acrylic.

OK these are Japanese woodblock prints, one in 'modern' inks, one not and this doesn't directly relate to the inks and paper stocks that the work most of us collect are done on or with, but the results would suggest that it really makes, practically, fuck all difference.
I know there's at least one pro framer (Misterframeman) on here and several galleries, artists, printers... so does anyone have any damaged/NG/reject prints and access to an 'off-cut' of UV glass or perspex and feel inclined to conduct their own experiment and post results over time? Or has anyone here already done something like this?
Or has anyone other ref or links that come to an opposite conclusion?
Sure we all want the best possible protection for our precious Art, but are the various glass manufacturers and their glossy (pseudo?) scientific explanations hyping their product beyond real world results or practical worth?

UV Protection Glass • Museum Glass, by GD303uk on Nov 3, 2007 1:26:43 GMT 1, True vue reflection conservation clear ( 98% uvreduction) = £23 m2 cut to size True vue reflection conservation reflection control ( 98% uvreduction)=£34.95 m2 cut to size True vue museum ( 98% uvreduction) =£135 m2 cut to size schott & Luxar uv isnt as good @ 84 % the same for G&M Range but schott do a good safety glas; mirrorgard protect, laminated, 99% uv protection=£300
all prices vary a bit on thicknes, quantity etc and all other factors. but i have been seeing if i can get frames made and then fit the expensive glass myself it turns out you can find a good framer who will do a good job and price it right or do it yourself and bite your nails, what ever you do good luck, i have a nice framer who i trust and lets me know how much everything is , and does a great job. i have been to framers though that will charge you through the teeth to supply uv glass i was quoted £600 plus to frame a pic in UV glass , full conservation etc, the way i see it is all my pics should be framed conservation and i shouldnt have to be ripped of for it( i found their supplier). i did spend a bit of time finding suppliers etc. mr frame man( i think he is known by ) from this forum does a good job, i might try him soon.

cheers mate that's very useful.
the framer said the uv glass he was quoting £250 for would only shut out 95% of uv (he was advising against the extra expenditure and suggesting that i should just find a place away from direct sunlight).
i'm not sure if he was allowing for spoilage. he did say that he had to take off the edges because you could see where the glass had been held while it was dipped and that the uv protection scratched quite easily.
