Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Hubble Bubble on Oct 30, 2020 14:17:06 GMT 1, I've recently picked up a piece from Sotheby's NYC. I have an estimate from them for shipping and am familiar with the customs protocol/codes for import into the UK and the rate I can expect to pay.
Does anyone have any experience of using Sotheby's direct shipping service? Any advice? Any 'watch out for's'?
cheers HB

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Pipes on Oct 30, 2020 14:28:40 GMT 1, I have used a very reliable courier to take items from NYC to UK.
Prices are reasonable, easy to deal with and the service is good.
Company is called skitchy
Be warned - will probably be carried as hand luggage though.

At 1.2m framed, even the legendary skitchy might find this one tricky to get on as hand luggage.
Cheers Pipes - keep meaning to look into that Eine query we have!

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by kaimac on Nov 4, 2020 23:50:35 GMT 1, Hi there.
Looking to ask someone who has experience of doing this for some advice: I am looking to ship a print, declared value of $10k, from the US to the UK. The shipping company is saying I need an EIN as the value is over $2500, but I am an individual not a company and I'm shipping as a private citizen. It seems insane to create an EIN just to ship one piece of art.
Anyone have any advice for me?
Cheers.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by corbu on Nov 26, 2020 12:42:49 GMT 1, I need some advice on art transit insurance. I have bought a piece of art from the US and need it shipped to the UK. I have contacted an art shipping company to do the shipping and packing but their insurance excess is the same as the price of the art, so they have recommended I find transit insurance from someone else. Any ideas who does this?

If you use a reputable shipping company they should have options for various companies. I’ve previously paid insurance at roughly 2% of artwork value if memory serves correct with no excess.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Horatio Nelson on Nov 26, 2020 15:27:50 GMT 1, Not quite the same, but I recently bought something quite valuable from a London gallery. They had offered to send it straight to framers and I would later collect from framers.
Maybe double check with your home insurance provider. I called my insurers (Hiscox) to add the item to the home contents policy and queries if/when it would be insured, noting that whilst I had paid and the item was legally mine, it was not then at my home address. In the end, their underwriter agreed to cover the item from the point of sale. Their logic was that if I had gone to collect the item myself, bring it home and then taking for framing, this probably carried greater risk than the professionals doing it.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Monkey on Dec 10, 2020 22:23:46 GMT 1, Hey all, I'm facing a new experience here Bought a Kaws Urge set from with other european chaps (some from here) and we're looking for the most secure way to ship it back from the US to France. From Fedex customer services, maximum insured value of a parcel is 1k$ but the set is worth 30k... Also waiting from Flight Logistics feedback. How are people dealing with this nowadays ? Any other recommandations ? Or maybe recommandations about 3rd party shipping insurances
Thanks in advance

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by soupy on Dec 10, 2020 22:38:11 GMT 1, never shipped something of that value... but i know you will need an EIN number (prior to shipping) in order to export anything valued over $2.5K. you can apply for one online via IRS website. in addition, you need an AES ITN number which is the customs/export tracking system. check with DHL as i think some carriers can take care of the AES ITN process for you if you fill out a form (US shippers letter of instruction) that has all the pieces of information they need. not sure what the max value is for the individual carriers though. at the bottom o fthe "required documents" link below (2nd URL).... there is a form to fill out to talk to a DHL certified international shipping specialist
