Be careful with members with zero posts!, by Deleted on Mar 9, 2020 11:28:05 GMT 1, Just a heads up to fellow members who have sales posts on the forum.
Its come to my attention whilst I have some sales threads up, that there are an increasing number of 'Members' old and new who have never posted on the forum. Nor have they introduced themselves and are replying to sales threads offering 'cash' and wanting to find out your address.
As some sales are for what some consider a fair size of money, one has no idea who these people are.
When I have asked for references like, 'have you bought from another forum member,' suddenly they disappear never to post privately again.
Just imagine what could happen once they have your address?
Anyway, I was just saying 'Lets be careful out there!' Thanks media.giphy.com/media/4kUtdN9alONZS/giphy.gif

Ive met plenty of nice people so don't let it put you off doing deals.

Be careful with members with zero posts!, by Acme Thunderer on Mar 9, 2020 22:23:05 GMT 1, Never speak to anyone with zero posts or who are newly registered - just out of common sense.
However, I've dealt with plenty of excellent members (both buying and selling) with just a few posts who can be trusted and they prefer face to face deals in a public location during the daytime so safe for both parties.

Be careful with members with zero posts!, by vickyv on Mar 9, 2020 22:31:16 GMT 1, Actually on this topic but slightly adjacent to it, if you are buying something from a forum member, how do you actually do it? I mean, do you do a public exchange - meet up in a public space, get your hands on the art and then do a bank transfer with them there & then? What is the best way to carry out the transaction, protecting both parties and the art? Sorry if itโs a daft question but Iโve never bought anything (without a solicitor involved) with such large sums of money involved. Thank you :-)

Iโm new on here with very few posts, Iโm mainly here to learn but already this year Iโve purchased from 4 forum members, 3 by post and one face to face, all smooth transactions just use a bit on common sense and research

Be careful with members with zero posts!, by eldukerman 212 on Mar 9, 2020 23:05:00 GMT 1, Ok a related note, I have an offer for asking price for the RTC piece I posted today. Wonโt name names, but just joined the forum w 1 post and offered me a check. I said PayPal or Venmo and they had to set up a PayPal account, which they did. USA based...is there any possibility of getting scammed if paid w PayPal? I would definitely take plenty of pics of the packaging, etc prior to shipping. Want to sell but want to obviously protect myself first and foremost.

As a seller you donโt have much protection from being scammed via PayPal. Take pics, and require them to sign for the package. Gives you best odds of winning the case.

USA based...is there any possibility of getting scammed if paid w PayPal? I would definitely take plenty of pics of the packaging, etc prior to shipping. Want to sell but want to obviously protect myself first and foremost. You can definitely get scammed through PayPal. If they file a claim the item is fake, PayPal will refund them - even without returning the item.
The only way to be safe as a seller is a payment as a Friend. Or by bank transfer. But that leaves the buyer at risk, because they have no way to get refunded in case you won't ship.
Not saying anyone is not to be trusted. Most of the time there is just no way to knowโฆ.
By the way - the only time I have been scammed through this forum was by a 6* member with 5000+ posts. And I have been in numerous transactions with 1* members that went perfectly smooth.
Not every member is here to comment. Some just read. Or just buy.
If your transaction involves big money, I would be careful. Maybe find a middle man to keep payment until item arrivรฉs. There's a fancy word for that, but can't remember.

Be careful with members with zero posts!, by Coach on Mar 10, 2020 0:30:03 GMT 1, Whilst it goes without saying that one should take care and do proper due diligence, people should not be put off doing deals on here. Iโve been buying and selling art on this forum for 13 years. Iโve never been scammed. I suspect that doing deals on here is safer than eBay. Never be afraid to ask for and take references. If uncertain, pay with protection rather than as a friends payment. I think itโs fair to say that the vast majority of people on here are genuine. Reading someoneโs posts usually gives you an idea of the type of person you might be dealing with.

Just do a bit of research on the seller and buyer, ask questions, get pictures(with date and username in the photo of the item if necessary), references and whatever you think is needed to satisfy you before jumping in. I have also been here for 13 years, done lots of buying & selling and in this time had only one minor issue with a seller and that was from a 5* star member and even then this was refunded through paypal so in the end it all worked out. Face to face I would say is obviously the preferred way to go but in most cases I would also say this is probably the least used method here due to peoples differing geographical locations. Donโt be put off from buying or selling at all. Just take care.

I drove upto London with ยฃ6500 in cash in my pockets to buy a couple of Rats. (it was a few years ago!) and despite photos/emails/PMs on here...I got the address. Felt funny and turned round and went home. I got a few rude emails but still had me cash so meh...I also called and left a message when outside. I'm not a total monster.

Be careful with members with zero posts!, by purpleandred on Mar 10, 2020 14:06:07 GMT 1, Do most of my "deals" at my workplace/office or somewhere local like a coffee shop or pub. paypal as gift or bank transfer with the usual nominal fee deposit done prior so details are on hand/stored for the final transaction. I don't do overseas shipping as fortunately there are enough buyers/collectors locally.
