Saw some really amazing Chinese art this morning on the Sotheby's live feed! While those particular artists seem to be WAY out of my price range, I was hoping someone might be able to recommend some up-and-commers from that region.

I love asian art and have researched the Chinese Contemporary scene a bit before. Though, found it really difficult to find any affordable stuff. It's a relatively new scene and China obviously still controls it's media, which probably explains it.

I know that there are a couple of galleries in London which specialise in Chinese contemporary art, but I reckon they're probably out of your price range (they are out of mine). Though, they often have exhibitions of up-and-coming artists and so it may be worth googling the names you see on their websites:

This site is also pretty interesting: www.artscenechina.com and the related site: www.artscenewarehouse.com. I never got a reply when I contacted them for prices. Though, you may have better luck.

Stuff does seem to come up on Ebay. Though, with piracy/forgery rife in China I'd be doubly careful of getting any stuff from the bay.

A lot of the stuff on Gallery Nucleus is by Asian artists or inspired by Asian art - not sure how much of it is Chinese though. Worth a look though, plenty of interesting stuff at great prices: www.gallerynucleus.com.

I really like Yue Minjun's work too. The Chinese contemporary scene has some really interesting artists; particularly, given the political situation in China.

Earlier in the year a few works came up for auction at Sothebys. Let's just say they weren't cheap. I had a look for some works at the time, but couldn't find anything affordable. Originals sell for tens of thousands.

think there is something by him/her in the sotherby's sale on friday. Was looking round yesterday and pretty sure I saw something that looked a lot like that.
As an aside (sorry to hijack the thread), if you have the opportunity I'd recommend you go and have a look around Sotherby's galleries, they've got some great stuff (banksy, faile basquiat, etc). I always thought it would be quite stuffy but I just walked in off the street and had a wander round.
In a funny way it seemed more open than this place considering the cliqueyness of the 'pm me if you want to know where to buy some new prints' vibe that has been developing recently.

This guys work looks interesting! I'm off to Beijing for a quick holiday and am keen to look at the contemporary scene there amongst other things. Must be some interesting work coming out with their rich history, current boom, political landscape etc.

Yue has a "school" where his body of work is reproduced. Rather than doing a limited run of prints, they do an unlimited run of hand-painted duplicates by his protege's. I've seen a couple dozen or so of these in person, and they look outstanding. If you can accept a non-traditional source.

As far as value for a collection, they're pretty much worthless. But to have an absolutely stunning, hand-painted work of art, they're a steal. The local Seattle re-seller offers them starting at $170 a pop for a 24" x 24".

This guy is great. Yue Minjun does all self-portraits. His sculptures are amazing. The people I work for are pretty big guns on the Chinese Contemporary scene...they have a massive collection of this stuff that they've put together over the past 4 years or so...I can throw you guys some names of other Chinese artists if your interested...Ling Jian, Zhang Huan, and Zhang Xiaogang (hands-down the hotest Contemporary artist right now)...and as far as price goes, forget it. At this point in the game, quality Chinese Comtemporary is untouchable unless you have millions to spend. Sothby's Hong Kong and London are showcasing Chinese Art at the Comtemp auctions in the next 2 weeks. Expect this stuff to keep skyrocketing...

His "Execution" print at Sotherby's has just gone for £2.6m, guide of 1.5-2m on live cam, interesting print and artist, very interesting.

Hi heavyconsumer, the name of the artist is Cui Nan. He's a Chinese Contemporary artist. I know western art/artists dominate this forum, but, I figure this is a nice change in pace.

Just started to look into Chinese artists in last 12 months (used to work out there a bit) and stumbled across this guy - Zhou Fan.

Liked this image in particular, I think more cos it reminds me of the lip shaped penny sweets you used to be able to by and try and stick over your lips - everyone else used to do that too right?!

I don't think there is or ever will be a Banksy equivalent in Asia...but, there are some superstars... check out Cai Guo Qiang, Yue Minjun, Zhang Xiaogang, Wu Guanzhong, and a recently "hot" artist Liu Xiaodong

Chinese Contemporary Art is going great guns at the moment, seen thrugh the high prices it is raising at auction and in galleries, and the demand from the growing wealthy of China. Don't discount it, is is set to carry on growing.

Oh, I almost forgot the obvious...Takashi Murakami. But, maybe it's me, but I can't stand his stuff. I appreciate the originality and overall brand, but it's all a bit too anime/manga for me...which I don't like...surprising as I'm Asian...

I have been looking at these up and coming Chinease artists for the past year or so. Definitely a nice and unique change for the contempary sector. Someday I will get one of these, been to consumed with with Faile, Parla and crew.

I have to do a presentation for an art class on a Asian artists. Was hoping someone might have a suggestion? I would prefer it to be street art but it doesn't have to be. I am thinking about going with Aiko but am still looking.
