Which galleries would you avoid?, by calnew on Mar 15, 2019 10:00:43 GMT 1, Thinkspace Gallery* rudely stating they canโt ship two prints together, charging me two separate shipping invoices then proceeding to infact ship both prints together. Also charging X4 of the actual shipping price. Little things like this speak volumes about a gallery. I have avoided purchasing originals from them now and go to the artist direct.

Which galleries would you avoid?, by longshanks on Mar 15, 2019 11:36:46 GMT 1, I know this is common practice, but Hashimoto (formally Spoke) have wound me up on first interaction. Was waiting for a show for many months, had been speaking to them (and artist) on the regular, very keen for pre-sale. Got the email, replied instantly with my choice and request for purchase. They waited 3 days, then I got the 'denied' email. Purchasing an original for me is a big deal - and takes months (maybe years) of saving. So yeh, I'm pretty bitter at the moment.
This apparently is their method for allocating pieces:
spoke-art.com/pages/collector-preview-faq
There's no way they have any of that info on me / my collection, so they just sold it to a friend / local. Very frustrating as there comes a point when an artist is out of my reach financially (normally pretty quickly) and with a baby on the way I fear this point may have come already.
Another one to add to the 'should be in the collection' list

Yeah 100%, just a huge difference between a bad experience and a established that should be avoided imo.
If they msg me info I'm happy to pass it on x

I agree with Carl on this one.

I like that they see potential in new customers rather than other galleries or places that just cater to their previous customers or ultrarich.

Yes, damaged a painting of mine and refused to take responsibility for it. They were also my framers of choice for many years as I naively believed that given their prices, location and years in the business that they woukd do a top quality job. It was only when I started to sell pieces theyโd framed that I realised they used a lot of non-reversible tape. Again, they took no responsibility. Fโing shysters.

Which galleries would you avoid?, by nobokov on Mar 15, 2019 18:03:46 GMT 1, Should these comments not go on Trip Advisor? If only there was a TripAdvisor for galleries. Because everyone is so afraid of missing the next buying opportunity or getting blacklisted, everyone has to keep up the facade of loving everything a gallery does, not matter how poor the treatment. These days i don't think we need to stand for that, especially when we're the ones who are spending our hard earned money.

These days i don't think we need to stand for that, especially when we're the ones who are spending our hard earned money. I couldn't disagree more. Well I could, but I won't. Dog biting hand that feeds it and all... But there was the gallery that asked me to give them a 'little sketch' that they could pass on as a gift to a 'good collector'... a collector who'd never bought any of my work... The gallery that never showed my work because it was too dark and then complained it never sold... The gallery that posted a framed drawing that was trashed by the postal service and then asked me to replace the drawing free of charge because the gallery wasn't insured... The gallery that asked me to make work like another artist... The gallery that lost all interest in me after discovering that this Bristol based artist who painted on the streets in the 80s didn't have BANKSY on speed dial... The gallerist starting new flash gallery in big city with daddy's money, planning and booking opening show with me and changing their mind a month beforehand to open a fashion boutique instead... And the gallery that disappeared taking mine and other artists' work (and monies owed), never to be seen again... Oh, class one this... the gallery that thought 50% commission wasn't nearly enough for them... story here...
