Rene Gagnon "The Force is Shaken" - NYC Dec 16th, by AFR1KA on Dec 14, 2015 17:27:44 GMT 1, NYC Editions is pleased to present The Force is Shaken, an exhibition of new works by Massachusetts-based artist René Gagnon. This exhibition will be the artist’s first solo show with NYC Editions, featuring 13 original pieces displayed on the ground level of the gallery. Opening reception is Dec 16th 7-9pm Castor Gallery NYC
Much of Gagnon’s work derives from process art and pop-culture references. For this exhibition, the artist aims to merge the iconic imagery of the Star Wars films with the movie Beat Street, which focuses on the graffiti scene in the Bronx. Inspired by the costume design in the Star Wars films, Gagnon aimed to create unique pieces combining his love for the movies and street art. He achieved this by photographing over 200 scenes from each Star Wars film to create the backdrop for all his works, highlighting the helmets as the subject of each piece, all while using techniques more familiar to graffiti. The final products of this exhibition are colorfully collaged elements and screen-printed imagery. The artist’s goal was to capture each film in two artworks, and allow the viewer to closely inspect each piece and decipher which film it was referencing. The exhibition runs until 23 December 2015. For sales inquiries please contact, info@nyceditions.com

Rene Gagnon "The Force is Shaken" - NYC Dec 16th, by Rene Gagnon on Jan 1, 2016 17:57:39 GMT 1, Fail to see the appeal of these. The star wars theme has been done to death and beyond. Agreed, the theme is been done to death, it's pop culture, the list is long of overdone themes/imagery. It's been on my to-do list for years and now it's done. An artist doesn't -not- do something because of your rationale, we do it to fulfill ourselves. The intent of this body of work was too 'appeal' to fans of star wars, I think they do that if nothing else. Your obviously not a fan, if you were you could appreciate these on a multitude of levels.

I'm a fan of star wars, but I just fail to see the need to create more works on this theme as many artists have created works based on it in the past.
I totally respect your artistic intent and didn't think you need to create to please others. There is no need to. Just felt that as an artist (and that doesn't necessarily be you), there are many other themes or things that one can explore rather than work on a same tired theme - unless there is another new perspective that haven't been approached on before.

Rene Gagnon "The Force is Shaken" - NYC Dec 16th, by Rene Gagnon on Jan 3, 2016 18:05:50 GMT 1, I guess as an art collector, which I assume you are on some level, you may see a ton of star wars related artwork. I know I do, most not by choice. I can appreciate that from your view, enough is enough. I've tapped into many pop culture themes throughout my career, I've never touched star wars, despite being HUGELY influenced by star wars. I may have pasted some stormtroopers in a piece 10 years ago but thats it. I felt like you, it's overdone. I'm always apprehensive to touch anything thats overused, but when a concept keeps entering my head the only way to move on is to complete the concept or body of work. The new film release made the creation of this work make sense. I got to watch and photograph the old films over and over again.
I've always wanted to do something with star wars, a portrait series kept popping up because the helmets are so timeless. On the one hand they look futuristic, but simultaneously feel old, that perfection of design always enthralled me. To make them mine was to tell the story in a single piece of art, which has not been done before to my knowledge. I ended doing 2 portraits for each film because there were so many scenes I wanted to use in the piece, and I had to move into some other characters that don't wear helmets for the sake of highlighting popular characters.
What you miss in web images is the countless hidden treasures buried in the layers of the piece. I created them and when I stand there and investigate the layers and discover all the great scenes in films, I'm engaged, so I know other fans would be too. These aren't to be taken at face value, but you'd have to own them to appreciate that.
Peace.

Rene Gagnon "The Force is Shaken" - NYC Dec 16th, by ABC on Jan 5, 2016 12:29:42 GMT 1, I think they look fantastic and no, I'm not just saying this as an Artist to an Artist as I do not know Rene personally.
In the art world there are/and will always be use of images that have been "done to death" Monroe, Skulls, Star Wars (skulls are top of the list for sure) and this will continue for a long time...Artists should first beyond anything else create works that they want to produce and not what others want them to paint. Painting for me is a natural creative process that flows from a want to create and be submerged in the work, an escape if you like (If you paint you will understand this)
The first thing I thought when I looked at in these works was not just starwars, but the overall effect of how they all look hung. The larger canvases (from the pictures) have so much work involved, images seem to be wrapped everywhere and are (IMO) very well put together, the colouring looks great and most importantly they work well from a composition point of view.
Well done Rene they look amazing, now as a StarWars fan can I have a look at the Biker Scout please.
