Quality of recent releases, by BKBOI on Oct 8, 2015 16:17:28 GMT 1, Issue is more about artists/galleries using secondary market prices to price recent releases. There is a reason how certain prints got super expensive. Old collectors framed them and few to go around for new collectors just entering the hobby. Flooding the market with 100-300 prints and thinking that they should be priced like the artists most coveted past works is a poor business model and will leave a lot of new collectors as well as speculators getting burned.

Quality of recent releases, by tigerblood on Oct 8, 2015 17:08:27 GMT 1, Agree with much of what has been said in this thread. I'm getting a bit disillusioned with new print releases. I've bought quite a bit this year (I have problems) but the prints nearly have all have been older (in most cases at least 5 years old) and also got some originals (bagged a few Sweet Toofs! along with some RAE).
The only 2015 prints which really sparked my interest are the new Dain and Luc Price.
Or maybe I just developed a thing for scribbled on females. :-D

Quality of recent releases, by mla on Oct 8, 2015 20:04:41 GMT 1, I think I've bought one print this year. Trying to thin the collection to mostly originals, with a smattering of hand finished prints. About to spend a mint on some Spongebob shit though, so I guess the plan isn't going so well.

Just realised I still haven bought a print this year. (The money has gone on nappies!) . There has been less quality releases this year and maybe the fact there are so many new artists releasing (can I say poor) prints, seems so much more releases.
I agree with catman the stand out for me is the fridriks print but with the s**t low Aussie $ and $800 for framing, and getting stung by customs so overall it's way too expensive. Lucas price was another nice print and the second Ian Francis Laz print is awesome but the misses won't leave me have that on the wall. I'm thinking with the money I have saved I may go buy an old neate or micallef print, something I liked 7/8 years ago but didn't pull the trigger. We'll see as there will be bound to be something around Xmas I will like, a big bast print would be nice..

The alternative is to underprice them and put money in the pockets of flippers instead of the artists and galleries. Seems like a no-brainer to me if you're an established artist being represented by an established gallery with a proven fanbase.

The Fridriks is great and a stunning print but for me it is fine/contemporary art and not urban art. As yet I'm to get a new Sweet Toof but for me they are much more representative of the scene or dare I say it, Stik, which is more out there on the street. In saying that I do really like Fridriks' work but I'm curious with many artists that gain a fanbase in the urban art scene that are as urban as my gran who lives in rural Lincolnshire.

Not arguing with that but artists should put out work that is worthy of the prices and not just because they have a name and are represented by proper galleries.

Quality of recent releases, by Mirus Gallery Poesia on Oct 9, 2015 5:41:58 GMT 1, Regarding prints it is true that I see more and more releases that I don't get but they seem to sell so why not... Shows are now about to start, oct-dec is always the big time for amazing staff and I am sure it will be the same this year. Brett amory's exhibition in NYC is just amazing, and with Moniker/Miami on the way, it should be spectacular as always (Sainer exhibition at thinkspace should be interesting...). I guess it is also a cycle, many artists that were popular here are now more establish, they are less interested in prints and hype, so there is less to talk about them. Just look at the Stik's release, 90% is about how much the prints should be sold, then what is the current value, what will it be in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, does it affect the price of the previous print, what should be the price of the next release, etc... all very interesting... I don't think it has to do with the quality of the works produced at a certain time, but more about who is active on this forum, what they are willing to discuss and the reaction they get. Museum shows by Faile or Swoon just receive a few comments and pictures, and that's it. You like it or not, you're satisfied or disappointed but that's about it... For me the dilemma remains the same: where to find the money to get this amazing art that I see popping all the time... I think this is a good point and great comment.
I hold my tongue more often now as I represent a commercial entity and coming across always negative isnt a good look always. Its a shame that great contributions and shows get no talk or responses in here. I actually just see this place as having a certain agenda now, even with all the great people that frequent it those that mostly participate or comment are concerned with flipping, not flipping, price check, hype, etc.
As far as prints its saturated just like everything else in the genre but if you know where to look you can find some great prints. If I was into prints over originals I would not have an issue finding some quality releases this year, so its relative. I try not to follow the trends that seem to be prevalent now and if you are bored with whats happening start to look places or at artists you might not have paid attention to before. The problem that I see is that most collectors react on FOMO or the fear of missing out, instead of trusting their judgment regardless if a print is sold out or not. Some ask why is a print still available after some time, and see it as negative right away. Sold out prints mean nothing to me if its not available its inconvenient but not a factor for success always.

Totally agree..if you like the piece whether is sold out or not should mean nothing in terms of quality and collectibility.

Quality of recent releases, by brut on Oct 10, 2015 16:27:38 GMT 1, I purchased my first print over 10 years ago & i seemed to buy quite a few pieces over the 2 years that followed. 2005-2007. I was obviously spoilt for choice as i had time to choose the pieces i liked on pow which included many Banksy pieces. The main problem i find with todays releases is the hype surrounding the 'half decent' releases that are available. This can cause a lot of regretful purchases.
The Stik print i really liked this year but was not lucky enough to get one. The Katrin Fridriks print is beautiful but the sheer size of it meant it was a no go for me as i like to hang what i buy & my walls are near to bursting point. The idea of storing copious amounts of prints in folders has never appealed to me.
Chrissel66 made a good comparison with music as i feel if you have been into the scene for quite a few years you can look at most new releases as being same old rehashed images.
I have purchased 3 prints over the past 2 years which are a Thierry Noir yellow head print from Howard Griffin gallery, and a Victor Ash Astronaut print from Mother Drucker. Both were emotional buys due to my love of Berlin & seeing these pieces on the walls. The other print was CMYK by blu. I was looking at the print on POW for about 3 years & finally decided to buy it last year & was so pleased i did as its beautiful & looks great next to my GWB. I am sure that i will never make a profit on these 3 prints & to be honest i don't care. I have also just noticed that there is only 1 left on POW. It seems it will finally sell out after about 5 years which is mad considering what sells so quickly these days. Buy what you like & you will never go wrong .

Quality of recent releases, by mla on Oct 10, 2015 18:04:42 GMT 1, Agreed on recent comments. Personally, I think if something sells out almost instantly, it's been priced incorrectly by the artist and/or gallery.
brut, the Blu appears to be gone now. I'm surprised it hung around for 8 years. Why people choose to support these fly by night "artists" over genuine work like Blu's is beyond me. In my eyes, he has executed some of the best and most meaningful street work over the last decade.

Quality of recent releases, by HRE on Oct 11, 2015 11:46:18 GMT 1, @japandemic I got mine last week and it is stunning. The paper/foil is so thin I am not sure how to get this framed. Do you have any ideas.

Quality of recent releases, by Deleted on Oct 11, 2015 12:40:24 GMT 1, I'm contacting framers, like MFM, to get their suggestions. Simple and nothing adhering to the print is my aim.
Agreed, it is a great piece. And Tauba Auerbach is a solid artist. Let me know if you get any good ideas.

Quality of recent releases, by brut on Oct 12, 2015 14:08:24 GMT 1, Agreed on recent comments. Hey mla. The Blu print is back up on POW's site as they have 2 left. 8 years & still going strong.

Quality of recent releases, by coller on Oct 13, 2015 15:09:27 GMT 1, There's probably the same amount of quality releases (few a year) BUT there's a lot, A LOT, of absolute toilet being released these days. this 100%
only real bangers from 2015 i can remember are natural springs by fairey, meadow by pejac, those cyclops prints, and.... yeah that's it. i don't own any of those, fwiw.
i didn't like the new zach, or anything dface/invader. faile blacklight invasion was close but still not really hitting for me. then a lot of other artists putting out bleh variations on their themes.
looking forward to something exciting though, always around the corner

Quality of recent releases, by Hairbland on Oct 13, 2015 15:50:41 GMT 1, Chrissel66 made a good comparison with music as i feel if you have been into the scene for quite a few years you can look at most new releases as being same old rehashed images. True...I made my career in the music biz...I recall someone saying a couple of years ago when apprised of the fact that there were almost 1,900 bands playing SXSW in Austin over 4 days that maybe there were too many bands out there.
It's no surprise, what with some urban artists doing sneakers, liquor bottles, lightbulbs and such (IKEA) due to urban / street art landing squarely on pop culture's radar that a slew of pale imitations would follow.
Kinda like New Wave following Punk Rock.
For the imitators it is a quick chance to make a buck. For the one note artists that initially landed successfully it's about making a living while the scene is hot. The very few will create a body of work that will grow in accomplishment.
It's also interesting to note that of the few that seem to have risen like cream to the top, and continue to grow in importance, virtually all have an art school background. Learning the basics, theory, history, and in some cases taking their ideas initially to the streets. Artists.
But with a hot scene, wannabes and upstart galleries feel the need to feed a hungry and at times equally uneducated consumer base.
