Quality of recent releases, by Dungle on Oct 7, 2015 22:46:29 GMT 1, Is it just me or is the quality of new work that is coming out at the moment just dire?
No names needed, and maybe it is just after such an immense show at Dismaland that spoilt us, but the print releases that have been announced over the last couple of weeks seem to be plumbing new lows.

Not prints, but the sweettoof releases recently have been great, and well priced. Highlights for me.

Yes I agree, but there is nearly always a few decent prints and images that I like.
Other than the Fridriks release and Sweetoof releases I'm struggling to thin of anything that I want.

Quality of recent releases, by ABC on Oct 8, 2015 11:36:50 GMT 1, I've just seen a friends new Zach print "Jurassic Bark" and it's very nice indeed. Also comes with a quirky USB in glass bottle which is a nice touch. Easily as nice as the Style wars IMO.

Quality of recent releases, by sakyamuni on Oct 8, 2015 12:18:07 GMT 1, Regarding prints it is true that I see more and more releases that I don't get but they seem to sell so why not... Shows are now about to start, oct-dec is always the big time for amazing staff and I am sure it will be the same this year. Brett amory's exhibition in NYC is just amazing, and with Moniker/Miami on the way, it should be spectacular as always (Sainer exhibition at thinkspace should be interesting...). I guess it is also a cycle, many artists that were popular here are now more establish, they are less interested in prints and hype, so there is less to talk about them. Just look at the Stik's release, 90% is about how much the prints should be sold, then what is the current value, what will it be in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, does it affect the price of the previous print, what should be the price of the next release, etc... all very interesting... I don't think it has to do with the quality of the works produced at a certain time, but more about who is active on this forum, what they are willing to discuss and the reaction they get. Museum shows by Faile or Swoon just receive a few comments and pictures, and that's it. You like it or not, you're satisfied or disappointed but that's about it... For me the dilemma remains the same: where to find the money to get this amazing art that I see popping all the time...

Quality of recent releases, by Quinnster on Oct 8, 2015 12:50:46 GMT 1, Some of the stuff being released is utter rubbish, but the thing that gets me is the price of new releases.
If POW could sell dolk, banksy, insect, eine etc for £50 back in the day all screen printed, why should complete unknowns want £150/200 for crap they make at home...

A sheet of somerset velvet will be a couple of quid depending on qty bought 2 tubs of ink can be £50 depending on colours/size 2 A1 positives printed can be around £30+ Added to that all the other bits and pieces, emulsion, screen wash, tape, newsprint, petrol to studio, hire costs, lots of wastage. That's without taking into account time coming up with the idea and man-hours to print it, creating the print ready artwork for positives, opaque pens and filler, tubes and acid free paper to post and many other things. Add to that if your paying a studio to print it for you they will charge for editioning, and retouching among other things. They would like to make some money out of it too

Quality of recent releases, by Deleted on Oct 8, 2015 13:18:23 GMT 1, Naming no names but there are loads of new artists going straight into pricing their prints at £150 plus. Many of these artists are just rehashing images of artists gone before them; please no more Disney, Star Wars, skulls or guns!! Many of these artists would struggle to sell originals for that price, but ride the print hype train.
I'm keen on Kunstrasen and Whatson's approach of building a fanbase by selling affordable originals. Their work might not be to everyone's taste but at least it has given their markets a chance to develop.

Sweettoof has paint acrylic, ink and glowing teeth, and good prices, enough said. Some prints houses not wanting to say the word Giclee but Archival ink instead just doesn't wash.

Then merge with the wrong print house and flood the market with prints + for the print house - for the artist Agreed. Whatson put out far too much work and is close to Eine levels of saturation. Having said that, he is really a one-trick-pony so perhaps for his career, which will be short lived, it is better for him to make as much money as he can for as long as he can because he will be soon forgotten.
Kunstrasen should lay off the production of prints and canvas editions and focus on producing quality work for a large show. We've all had enough of the aforementioned plays on Disney and Star Wars and I've had enough of pop-art references and people writing on walls. We're all waiting for something new and exciting; if you can't do that, don't bother. If he had a pair of balls he'd call up GP right now and tell them to burn those "A Thin Red Line" canvases right this instant.
There were very few quality releases this year. Perhaps I'm forgetting one or two but I'd say the only releases I liked were Pejac, Katrin Fridriks, Gerhard Richter (P13 included! I can't understand the hate for this image!) and perhaps the upcoming Miaz Brothers release. If I had had the opportunity I may have purchased a Kaws print at the original price point.

Quality of recent releases, by LAZARIDES on Oct 8, 2015 15:22:14 GMT 1, With any release the price should reflect the work that has gone into it. Sweettoof has paint acrylic, ink and glowing teeth, and good prices, enough said. Some prints houses not wanting to say the word Giclee but Archival ink instead just doesn't wash. A Little Bit of History…
The original intentions behind the use of giclée are totally innocent and honest. Back in the Nineties, a very well known American printer called Jack Duganne was at the bleeding edge of digital inkjet printing technology.
In making his beautiful prints, Jack was among the very first people to offer inkjet printing commercially to the discerning fine art world, but he needed a name for his process, a name that would sound elegant and really pop…
“The French language sounds good”, thought Jack, so he picked up an English-French dictionary and looked up the word for squirt or spurt — after all, that’s what happens when the printheads fire ink onto paper, right?
And, lo, Giclée was born and printers and punters alike have battled with its spelling and pronunciation ever since.
What’s Wrong with Giclée?
It sounds nice doesn’t it? And, in a way, it is. Unfortunately, you only have to speak to a Frenchman about your Giclée process to be sure of a drenching as a result of the coffee they’ve just spat all over you. Why? Because, and there’s no easy way to say this, in French slang giclée means ejaculation.
So, Which Name Should We Use?
'Digital Inkjet Prints of the Highest Quality' doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, so we like to call them what they are: Archival Pigment Prints (APP). Take note, however, that we only use this name because that’s exactly what they are — archival, and made with pigment inks.

Quality of recent releases, by chrisell66 on Oct 8, 2015 15:24:58 GMT 1, How long you've been collecting/involved probably affects your view.
A bit like music - I was obsessed for years then slowly everything started to seem a bit derivative. If you've heard all the greats from the last 30-40 years its hard to hear anything new be it guitar or dance.
Isn't this all the same - there's a lot of oh no not again work out there - but there probably was 8 years ago when I bought the same stuff that makes me go oh no not again now.
This year I loved the Hush and Rone releases - plus there's been some cool cheaper stuff floating about - loving my Bobby Hill right now. It ain't been a ground breaking year and whilst I 'm pleased with my Faile Sweet Sins I understand if you've already got earlier pieces you may have gone nah ....

Quality of recent releases, by natstan on Oct 8, 2015 15:49:36 GMT 1, If we are talking within the confines of urban or street art, I do agree the recent releases have been a little underwhelming this past 1/2 year. Pejac's meadow and eelus's wtnfu are about the only ones I picked up during this period and imo, priced sensibly for the collectors. Angel 41's new one is nice too in terms of imagery.
The rest that were released lately prove to be just too same-old same-old (GP's releases today aren't helping) - from dolk to nick walker to roamcouch. Nothing that makes me want to part with my money, but that's just me.
