Fundraiser for Syria , by thisisanton on Oct 14, 2015 16:50:26 GMT 1, I tend to steer clear of these auctions as the people supplying the work usually own other works by the same artist. Charity auctions usually get over bid on, giving them something to compare to when they sell their own works. Its happening right now, no names mentioned. Jeez! It's a charity auction for heavens sake. I would be amazed if people donating pieces (the majority of which are the artists themselves) were doing so for any reason other than to help the charity and the people of Syria. Dig deep folks, if you can. Amazing effort by the chaps over there. We all know he's an a$$. He should have donated that Paco print. Then maybe he could sell his other ones for one billion dollars with all the hype the first one sold for.

I know it's your personal opinion. I just think it's a pretty shocking opinion. And I think it's exceptionally poor form for a MOD on here, with the potential influence that comes with that, to make comments that could actively discourage people from donating to a charity auction organised by another forum.

People are free to decide how and by what method they want to donate to charity. Hope it does well, just saying the charity benefits more from direct donations with gift aid. Corporate companies like ebay are not allowed to use the gift aid system which is a shame.
Fundraising pages are great as 99% of the money goes to charity + tax relief. This is why the banksy charity auction worked so well. I just feel ebay auctions can be easily boosted.

Your assertion was that people were cynically putting pieces in the charity auction, whilst holding other works by the same artists, so that they could later sell pieces by the same artist for more. Nothing to do with gift aid. That appears to have been an afterthought. I still think that that was an inappropriate assertion for anyone, let alone a MOD, to make regarding a sterling effort by others to raise money for an important charity.

You have made yourself clear regarding your views on mods plenty of times, no need to keep going over old ground. Good luck in the auction.

Fundraiser for Syria , by Happy Shopper on Oct 14, 2015 17:34:57 GMT 1, Maybe I'm cynical like FR, but I do wonder about the motivation too. How do the economics of it work? I assume the total money donated comes off the gallery's tax bill at the end of the year? Something like that? It's a win, win, deal though if charities benefit !

I think the vast majority of mods do a very fine job. I have said that several times. I was at the start dubious about the need for so many mods. Now seeing the hard work they do, I would have it no other way.
I think your initial comments were a real slap in the face of all the people who donated work. And ran the risk of undermining the auction, which is for a very important charity.

I have no idea how tax works. But if a gallery is prepared to put a Borf original in to the charity pot, that's pretty special I reckon.

And the vast majority of the donations are not from companies.
But none the less you said people were donating so they could later sell other pieces at inflated prices. That's the awful thing that you said. No matter how much you now try to hide behind gift aid and tax deductibles.

Fundraiser for Syria , by Coach on Oct 14, 2015 17:58:42 GMT 1, This is so good of people here but can i ask what is donated by artists directly - its very difficult to tell and will make a big difference to what I might want and how much I would bid. I don't mean to be rude as it says Artists for Syria but I cant tell which artists. I would be disappointed to bid on something believing the artist has donated it and then find out they played no part - is that too obsessive, should I care? I tend to steer clear of these auctions as the people supplying the work usually own other works by the same artist. Charity auctions usually get over bid on, giving them something to compare to when they sell their own works. Its happening right now, no names mentioned.

Trying to discredit the efforts of generous charity work?
