I want to buy a medium sized print from a gallery in UK. They charge ยฃ35 for shipping to Germany. In my opinion this is way too much. Am I wrong? What is a reasonable price?
Thanks for help

Shipping costs, by DrWhite on Jun 25, 2015 9:24:32 GMT 1, I have shipped to Germany from the UK - and I think that ยฃ35 isn't bad, I paid a similar amount for international tracked & signed - consider also that if you go with the gallery option, that will refund or replace if your print is lost or damaged, most likely without the hassle for you of dealing with the courier or shipper.

I agree - sounds about right to me.

Shipping costs, by phischa on Jun 25, 2015 10:06:56 GMT 1, I bought some stuff recently in UK, but the shipping costs were much lower. It just seems strange to buy a print for 50 and pay additional 35 for shipping.
Thank you DrWhite and @ekap for your quick help.

Shipping costs, by tab1 on Jun 29, 2015 14:33:13 GMT 1, www.parcelforce.com/price-finder
Easy to get on the Internet and find UK based couriers and get a quote
Prices have increased quite a bit from last year also with international post .
Seems normal price for post and not charged for packaging , with tubes costing ยฃ5-ยฃ12 ;-)

Shipping costs, by pcant on Jun 30, 2015 6:08:35 GMT 1, That's nuts (the $650 shipping charge). I just got a canvas shipped in a giant wooden box, so heavy the postman had to use a hand truck to deliver it, and that cost about $300.

Shipping costs, by ABC on Jun 30, 2015 13:29:08 GMT 1, Postage prices should always be factored into an art buy. One thing to note is that the majority of couriers do not allow art to be shipped (read the small print). That does not mean you cant ship it but if you read the small print it is normally an item from the so called "ship at your own risk"
Unless you use a dedicated art courier, it's a very "keep your fingers crossed" business. I used to use Interparcel, wouldn't touch them with a barge poll now and would advise against them...long story..
If you want piece of mind then you have to pay a premium.

Agreed - I have said many times that if you look at your insurance it states art will only be insured for loss and NOT damage.....And as you say, some won't insure it at all ย
The only one i am aware of is Flight Logistics who will collect your piece, inspect it and package it and then send it fully insured. I was quoted just over ยฃ170 to send a piece to the States like this but given the value of the piece it was money well spentย
And to reinforce Coach's point - I have had a few bits now - prints and originals where bubble wrap was directly on the piece - it reacts and you get a bubble pattern!!! - As soon as a piece turns up in bubble wrap i strip it back and get some protective paper in there between the two asap
Edit : this is what happens when you respond directly from the recent posts - I'm actually responding in one thread and making reference to comments in another - sorry for the confusion

Shipping costs, by Deleted on Jun 30, 2015 14:36:23 GMT 1, I usually use Fedex, who insures fully up to 10k for loss and damage. But, My latest piece from germany to canada, I quoted at $750 with them, using a business fedex acct, was quoted $450, and thats why im using DHL at $260.
However, DHL Global (Not express) which we used, doesnt track fully, so I basically have $10,000 floating around the world somewhere in a box. The stress relief alone is worth the extra money. Fedex, I usually dont have a problem.
Keep in mind, to ABC's point, Paypal insures damaged and lost goods. You dont HAVE to go through the shipper.

Shipping costs, by cmodart on Jul 11, 2015 13:45:29 GMT 1, If it's not over water, consider a private courier. I sold a Lichtenstein that was 2.5 meters framed. I paid a guy to drive it about 400 miles and it was cheaper than the crate.
