Nuart the festival, a commercial exploitation or relevant?, by peggy on Sept 25, 2014 1:15:40 GMT 1, Question for all on here. What is the feeling? How many people does it engage in art? How many new artists does it engage? How many new artists does it inspire? Does it add to Norwegian art, or pander to a stereotype? Does it set an agenda or follow one?
No agenda, no opinion here, honest questions looking for an honest discussion

Nuart the festival, a commercial exploitation or relevant?, by Deleted on Sept 25, 2014 1:52:53 GMT 1, Hi Peggy,
Can you clarify what you're referring to as exploitation? I don't know enough about the event to contribute to the discussion, but now I'm curious.
thx

using the words a commercial exploitation or relevant...... Surely suggests you either do have an agenda or an opinion
So I would then therefore look at your next statement which says honest question looking for honest opinion. When you do not seem to be being honest with your own statements.
not sure you can come up with this set of questions without having an opinion or have looked at these questions yourself.
so I would expect /suggest that you at least explain what you mean and why your posing these questions what has brought you to there.
----------------------------- Exploitation is the use of someone or something in an unjust or cruel manner, or generally as a means to one's ends. Most often, the word exploitation is used to refer to economic exploitation; that is, the act of using another person as a means to one's profit, particularly using their labor without offering or providing them fair compensation. ---------------------------------------------
So for someone with no addenda or opinion you are suggesting quite a serious implication that Nuart are exploiting artists, art fans/collectors, Norway, Norwegians etc either some of these or all etc.
so I suppose I would like to know how if you have no agenda or opinion you got to the question you posed???
or tell us what the agenda is as it sounds far more interesting?

Nuart the festival, a commercial exploitation or relevant?, by Deleted on Sept 25, 2014 7:48:08 GMT 1, Hi Penny, Nuart is a non commercial academic art event founded in 2001 and funded by the Norwegian Arts Council. It has 1 full time (somewhat mouthy) creative director and an unpaid board. The academic program Nuart Plus is free entry as are all events and publications associated with each nuart including the exhibition. All talks, debates, panel discussions and artist presentations are recorded and made available copyright free to schools and researchers. The education program for schools is funded by the county council and has engaged over 5000 school children in the last two years, all events are free. The weekly street art tours are subsidised and funded by Nuart. Hands on workshops from the likes of Swoon, Logan Hicks, Brad Downey, Icy and Sot, Dan Witz etc etc are all free of charge and oversubscribed. Artists working on the residency program with the local art school (established to promote the use of cans in schools) are paid the recommended union rates, as are all paid positions during the event. Employee rights are, quite rightly, very strong in Norway.
The festival was established with an initial council grant of 800 pounds. It now operates with a budget of just over 140 000 pounds. It has zero holdings and does not pay dividends, if the festival breaks even, we're generally very happy. If the festival creates a profit (it never has apart from one time in 2007 when the board decided to donate it all to Amnesty), it is likely that funding bodies decrease the following years funding. The company car is a VW Caddy with dodgy brakes and a piece of string for a backdoor lock.
I hope that answers the loaded "commercial exploitation" aspect of your no agenda, no opinion question.
As for relevant, others will have to be the judge of that. but.. I hope so.
Marshal McLuhan detourned by Maismenos
Top right on the Silo's Tilt and Koolt throwups
Fra Biancoshock intervention on the vacuous nature of (street art) celebrity
SpY "Error" or gentrify this
And, to remain relevant to the internet, a picture of a puppy, Nu's latest addition to staff.
Peace.
PS : But I'm also curious now as to what brought this on Penny, I know you have no agenda or opinions, but it would be good to hear them nonetheless ?

Nuart the festival, a commercial exploitation or relevant?, by Dr Plip on Sept 25, 2014 9:08:11 GMT 1, I'm just stunned that Peggy's not speaking like a dog. WTF?
Where's the usual dog-speak?
"PEGGY SAYS, NUART, WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT?" "WOOF WOOF WOOF"
etc.
I hope her account hasn't been hacked.

Nuart the festival, a commercial exploitation or relevant?, by Graffiti Prints on Sept 25, 2014 10:38:06 GMT 1, I popped over to nuart for the weekend and was amazed by it all.
A million times better than I expected and I expect a lot from Martyn and co.
Organisation was first class, so was the art and the music.
Stavanger is a beautiful place and more so for the street art on display everywhere
It's a great weekend out and I recommend it to anyone

Nuart the festival, a commercial exploitation or relevant?, by kultur on Sept 26, 2014 20:22:43 GMT 1, I think Aryz says it best about 2:50 into this video. I like his honesty.
BTW this video is absolutely incredible as his talent shines.

are you saying that none of the people involved with organising this festival and on the board have any commercial interests to do with selling art and ltd editions by any of the artists that have taken aprt in the festival?
