How would you frame it ?, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 18:14:24 GMT 1, Looking for some framing advice and what people would think best. I'm considering putting up "Agostino Iacurci - The Dialogue", "Maya Hayuk - Very X", and "Brainwash - Retrospect". What do you guys think would be the best framing choices? How would you frame something as big as retrospect (if your answer is "I wouldnt" please refrain, thx). Any advice is greatly appreciated -

How would you frame it ?, by bjornca on Aug 29, 2014 18:23:17 GMT 1, I always prefer simple frames. For each, I would probably do white frames, similar to what @streetfart did (hope you don't mind I'm using your photo as reference - they look great). Let the pieces speak for themselves. I think the white would contrast nicely with the Mr. B. I would also probably float each of them with a spacer.

You could also do the same but with black
Boring but it works really well

How would you frame it ?, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 18:29:05 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice guys. Apparently you cant float the brainwash because its too large and heavy stock paper, but I wish I could as its hand torn edged paper. I think ill float dolk and maya for sure.

How would you frame it ?, by bjornca on Aug 29, 2014 18:40:19 GMT 1, I'm not certain how large that piece is, but I do have a Mr. B. Celebration print (~35x35) floated (albeit no longer on the wall). It was definitely a heavier paper with deckled edges, but it turned out nicely and haven't had any issues.

How would you frame it ?, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 18:45:02 GMT 1, Hmm, really does look good floated. I've spoke to both of my framers and both dont want to do it, not sure why. Im asking for UV Plexi, not museum, but dont see how that should matter regardless. Retrospect is 45.5" x 45.5"

My guess is size is the issue (mine is framed with UV plexi given the weight otherwise, and earthquake potential in these areas). Going to be a costly frame up though, regardless.

How would you frame it ?, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 19:11:41 GMT 1, If your not going to float it, you may want to forego the matt, as it is a large piece, and frame to the edge with a spacer.
I had to compromise on framing the Retna so it could be the same size as the Crash because my wife is hanging them side by side. So I skipped floating it.
Sorry for the bad pic, need to keep the wrapping for travel tomorrow.

How would you frame it ?, by bjornca on Aug 29, 2014 19:12:04 GMT 1, That price sounds a little steep. I think I had a few pieces framed with the final dimensions being around 42x42 and it was closer to $450 (UV plexi, mat, etc.). And, that was before finding a better / cheaper framer in LA.

How would you frame it ?, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 19:43:14 GMT 1, Thanks a lot for the help thus far, much appreciated. Last question, so if I go with a spacer its simply the pressure of the backing pushing the print up against the plexi ? Is that safe for the print ? Assumed that you needed to matt the print just to protect it from touching the glass/plexi (clearly new to framing).

Opposite, it keeps it away from the glass/Plexi

How would you frame it ?, by Poly Mindset on Aug 29, 2014 20:27:58 GMT 1, Hey there, I just took an large format Obey 42" x 42" on thick paper to my framers last night. It can be floated but will require a lot of adhesive in the form of tape or hinges, you don't want to do that. Also the difference between regular UV plexi and museum UV plexi is the non glare/clarity factor and it also reduces finger prints immensely. On a large piece you don't want glass, it will be too heavy. Yes, the proper way to frame a large piece is using spacers between the plexi and the art and foam board behind the art and no adhesive at all ever. My cost was $625 with a very nice 3" wide frame and museum plexi. pm me if you want the framer I use. I'm in So. Cal. Good Luck

When you say museum, are you referring to Optium museum? I've been quoted anywhere from $75-125 per square foot on that (at 42x42, not including spacing, that would be an ~$900 piece of plexi).
Btw, who do you use in LA? Can PM me if you want.

How would you frame it ?, by trees on Aug 30, 2014 2:05:40 GMT 1, And does anybody have a suggestion for a cheap place to get this framed in NYC ?
Try oj gallery on 56th and 3rd. Got a few prints framed by them after checking out a few spots. He was always the least expensive after some bargaining. Max is a pretty nice guy and even delivered my pieces to my apt for free. Keep in mind a noob to this. They say they use archival materials. I've had some minor issues so I probably wouldn't take a super expensive print there, but otherwise they get the job done at a reasonable price
