Hi,

Art Republic have both of these for sale:

Evolution ed 250 for £550

Crown for £500

Please note I DON'T work for them I'm just seeing some of the crazy prices on EBay and thought I'd try and keep people away from these greedy greedy flippers!!

Saw them on there night and my immediate thought was the prices weren't too outrageous especially for the regular 'Evolution'.

I don't really understand how what they are doing is at all different to all the other flippers out there. They're selling a very recently released print which they don't yet have in their possession for an inflated price. Am I missing something?

no, you are not missing anything.
The difference is they can absorb the cost and take the profit.
The downside is it affects some people's perceptions of them , which is good and bad.
Good in that you can still buy the work , bad in that the price is higher.
Swings and round abouts.

AR have been working in this market for a long time - they're ok people.
Many here have bought from them at some stage, myself included.
Don't foget they've given work away in the past. (J&J if my memory serves me right..)
Alas DOLK is now off my list for the forseeable - work has gone downhill since TOY (imo).

I guess the biggest difference is that HMP would have agreed for AR to sell them for whatever reason (I assume?). maybe art republic helped fund the printing or something? not sure how these things work or why HMP wouldn't keep them all for themselves. unless they literally just have one or two of each and it's a straightforward flip, but I would have thought theyre operating at a higher level than that

There is no difference and they are just flippers.

I only let people know as I have seen that there are people trying to sell Evolution on EBay for anything from £800 upwards and I thought I'd try and save people a bit of cash.

It's a curious move by DOLK at this stage in his popularity to partner with Art Republic and hedge his bet on a quick sell out from the primary source of distribution.  The market has shown that this type of delayed sales roll out really can negatively affect the pricing of an item on the secondary market like it did to DFACE and the Street Improvements I, II, III, IV & V series.  Art Republic prices are more than fair considering they are a legitimate source of art but I just don't understand why an established artist would take this route.

I agree. Dolk doesn't need AR so I'm not sure why this deal has been done.

Surely an up and coming yet not too well known artist would be benefit much more from this kind of deal.

The only difference is that they are flipping at a bit cheaper price, still flipping though..

How do you know that DOLK partners with AR? I know about a lot of galleries that have several people waiting at the releaseday to sell DOLK's prints later at a higher price..

If you are selling a print that was just released for more than cost from source, you are not a partner but a flipper. Having a gallery/name just makes it sound legit but no difference from buying one off ebay.

id argue there are situations where the line is blurred. eg if your gallery has agreed to buy a number of everything a printhouse releases (flippable or not - imagine this would be quite mutually beneficial), or if you put money towards initial printing costs, or if you're selling the artist's share of the prints like postersandtoys do with Horkey

This just isn't the case. Consider any product that is sold by the original maker or provider to another business. A completely random example of say Hilton hotels selling rooms to Expedia. In this instance the original source could be cheaper but that doesn't mean that the other company is flipping, they just work on a different business model. Both businesses actually support the other one to sell  same product in a variety of ways. Just surprised that Dolk didn't appear confident enough to sell all on HMP. Perhaps though this was a long standing agreement.

Artrepublic have always had exclusive editions from the likes of POW, Obey Giant, HMP etc so dont get worked up about it, its business!!

But as we are on the subject of flipping... I find it interesting that it has become somewhat acceptable on here in recent times, ie Hang Up Pictures would never of got away with that many wtb threads back in the day!!! IMO of course!!!

skitchy - it's nice to see some of the guys from 06 still active.  I agree with your point about flipping and some other practices that have become a bit more accepted on here through the years.  IMO the main reason is that the whole entire street art movement has changed so rapidly the last few years and I am not sure it's a good thing.  Many of us are starting to question if we are into an artist that we felt represented a lot of our beliefs on society is even that same guy nowadays.  Is he a man of the people or is he some sell out with a wife and kids living in Los Angeles laughing at us losers that bought into the Thierry Guetta BS, magical stories of glitter issues, que jumper prints for the weak and VIP passes for celebrities.  I for one feel like I am living the Talking Heads song "Once in a Lifetime" when it comes to Banksy and the whole scene recently.

......i agree J, i rang a well know urban artist earlier to ask his opinion but he was busy having his toenails gold plated and sipping Champers through a straw made from a hollowed out virgin.
