Carl Cashman π¬π§ New Painting β’ Print Release, by svenman on Jul 23, 2013 23:44:18 GMT 1, Breeze Block Gallery presents in Gallery 1: Controlled Spaces: New work by Mario Wagner And in Gallery 2: Every Time I Close My Eyes, All I See Is This: New work by Carl Cashman Two solo exhibitions curated by Sven Davis Breeze Block Gallery Portland OR. 1 August β 30 August 2013
Mario Wagner Breeze Block Gallery by sven / a million pieces, on Flickr
Breeze Block Gallery is proud to present Controlled Spaces, an all-new collection of work by Berkeley based artist Mario Wagner.
Wagner creates worlds imbued with a sense of cinematic intrigue and sci-fi fantasy that speaks to the era from which he draws reference - a time when futuristic fascination was widespread, space travel was imminent, and the possibilities of technology were limitless. Wagnerβs immersive landscapes depict mysteries that border on the eerie, begging at the viewerβs imagination and inviting contemplation of the origins of the storyβs beginning and its probable end. The characters reflect a haunting sense of being watched as they proceed bewilderedly through the ominous realms they inhabit.
The intangibility of thoughts and energies materialize into something outside of Wagnerβs self, allowing him to attain a personal balance when creating his artworks. He finds imaginary solutions to the questions posed within the worlds he builds and allows himself to enjoy being the authority that directs the fate and actions of the characters he creates within his stories.
Wagnerβs art practice employs analog methods of collage incorporating vintage print media, which requires exacting levels of finesse with the tools of his trade - scalpel blade, scissors and glue in addition to acrylic. In a digital age, his old school methodologies echo the retro-futurist content of his work. Using these traditional materials and practices allows him to create something new from assembled artifacts, manipulating his imagery to present an all-new collaged aesthetic.
About Mario Wagner Mario Wagner was born 1974 in Germany and now lives and works as an artist and illustrator in Berkeley, USA. His work regularly appears in publications such as the New York Times Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Esquire and WIRED Magazine and has been published in renowned anthologies, including Illustration Now! and 3x3 Magazine. He also contributed work to advertising campaigns for clients such as Ikea, Adidas, Stussy, and Absolut Vodka; where his bottle design was part of the Absolut Blank artist series which also featured contemporaries such as Dave Kinsey, Brett Amory, David Bray & Jeremy Fish. His fine art has been shown at art fairs such as SCOPE, NADA, Aqua and Art Basel Miami and at numerous exhibitions in Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and London, with galleries such as Fifty24SF, LeBasse, Cinders and Lazarides. His work is currently being exhibited in Londonβs prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the science fiction-themed exhibition Memory Palace based upon author Hari Kunzruβs futuristic vision of a dystopian London.
Carl Cashman Breeze Block Gallery by sven / a million pieces, on Flickr
Breeze Block Gallery is proud to present Every Time I Close My Eyes, All I See Is This, the first solo exhibition from UK based artist Carl Cashman.
Carl Cashmanβs most recent works continue to develop his own distinctive brand of Op-art he has named βNeometryβ; geometric based Op-art made with a primarily neon based palette. His bold use of color takes on another dimension when exposed to black light as a further level of both color and fluorescence is enhanced and revealed by ultraviolet light rays. His work is inspired by a wide range of sources, from pioneering artists such as Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, M C Escher, and more recently the Beautiful Losers artists to nostalgic memories of his youth in the form of early pixelated video games.
Cashmanβs work uses flat blocks of color arranged in such a way to present a series of dimensional portals that leap off the wall through by his use of tonal balance, creating the illusion of dimension and depth. These abstracted realities challenge our perceptions of volume and space.
His cleanly painted lines carry a level of precision that can easily be confused with computer generated imagery upon first glance, but a second look reveals that all of his work is painted meticulously by hand β a testament to not only his confidence as an artist, but also the fastidious level of draughtsmanship that goes into the creation of each work.
About Carl Cashman Carl Cashman was born in 1983 and studied Fine Art at Dartington College of Arts in Totnes, Devon where he is now based, working full time from his studio. His Geometric/ Op-art works are executed in vibrant neon based acrylics. In addition to the two group exhibitions he has participated in at Breeze Block Gallery, Carlβs work has been exhibited over the last 4 years at the Moniker art fair in London, at various UK group exhibitions, in Australia and recently at Fifty24MX in Mexico City. Every Time I Close My Eyes, All I See Is This is Carlβs first solo exhibition. Though Carl is comfortable painting small to medium sized works in his studio, he is equally at home painting outdoors on the street where he has completed a number of large mural works over the last 12 months. His geometrically themed work defies the restrictions placed on scale and translates equally well on a small scale canvas or a 40 foot long wall.
Both exhibitions open at Breeze Block Gallery on Thursday 1st August 2013 6-10pm with a preview evening on Wednesday 31st July 2013 6-8pm. Both artists will be present.

Carl Cashman π¬π§ New Painting β’ Print Release, by svenman on Aug 1, 2013 12:47:52 GMT 1, We've had an amazing response to Carl's show so far. Mark Parker added a few pieces to his collection, which is really exciting for Carl. Opening is tonight.
Juxtapoz did a little feature on Carl also, but it seems their server is down as I write this...
Some preview pics from Mario's show on Juxtapoz and Hi Fructose...
Mario's work is very affordable for this show. some great 9x12 inch pieces at just $350. For those not familiar with his work, you may have seen it currently at the Victoria & Albert Museum, on an Absolut bottle as part of their 'Blank' artist series, or at various galleries including Lazarides.
To get a preview link to both shows, email Paige Prendergast <paige@breezeblockgallery.com>
