It is no better than getting a copy of the litho poster (which it is) and signing banksys name on it. Open to abuse by forgers, its exactly why pest control was set up.

charlie (Pure Evil) has one (or had one...) just casually on his wall towards the back of the shop

If all / most artists were given one there will a LOT in existance. Plus support staff maybe? POW have traditionally given helpers / organisers a little something as a thank you...

this is no doubt me being thick but how does that work with Pest Control having "authenticated" it but they won't issue a COA?

Is it a case of "yes its legit but we won't give you a piece of paper to that effect?"

Surely if there is some sort of proof of correspondance with PC, with them stating its legit, that is effectively a COA anyway?

Try telling that to the people ripped off by the banksy fraud a couple of years ago.

Was partly why pest control started, there were emails faked which had written confirmation.

Asked POW for a CoA for a signed monkey queen back from his show in Berlin. They told me that it was legit, but they wouldn't give a CoA.
I wouldn't buy without a CoA anymore, West Country Prince did a awesome job

If you have the proof from the seller, and the trust. Get a written coa with address etc You would be fine. More likely it was for the guy selling it.

I understand why coa's arnt given but I think it's a bit of a shame.

He does coa some gifts, but not all of them. Not sure why?

Anyone can knock up a coa. Its not authentic though?

If you love it that much to spend £2,500 on it or whatever then go ahead. If you ever come to sell it though or pass it down through the family as an investment, then there might be a nasty surprise if the standard is to have an official coa. It is the equivalent of getting a bucket, pouring it full of petrol, lighting it and chucking in thousands of pounds.

Look at how the warhol people authenticate stuff. We are lucky that pest control started when the artist is still alive and can check this stuff.

On the other hand, if they did authenticate these, then they would be worth a crap load more than £2,500.

People always try to pickup signed banksy stuff on the cheap, thats where all this forgery stuff comes into play as thats where they prey on people looking for bargains.
For an authentic signed piece, expect to pay the premium.

Could pow authenticate a not intended for sale letter with no unique code. Stopping from auction houses taking it on?

Guess its really the point of a coa. If it has it with, then its ok. Without then no reputable auction house will sell it anyway.

Must point of that it really is a dangerous game to suggest to people on a forum that its ok to buy things without pest control off ebay. This is from someone with first hand experience. Especially to those people who may not be up on this stuff. As collectors we have a responsibility to almost self police things.

Please do not suggest it is ok with a personal coa or written letter otherwise there could potentially be a huge mess down the line.

Its easy enough to confirm with PC if the name of the owner matches up with the name on their database - so there really isnt any need for the scaremongering, unless those who are doing the scaremongering have another agenda, like ooooh I dont know, perhaps put others off from bidding!!!

Really, COA's are always secondary to provenance as far as I'm concerned. If it's a gift print and you can track it back to Banksy, no problem, if it's a print with a reciept, registered in your name at POW. No problem. If you have full provenance. It's a Banksy. If you have a print and no provenance, but a COA.. well, you might be able to sell it on. But you'll never know it's real Provenance people. Really, don't blindly rely on a COA.
