Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by maroom on Jan 20, 2012 20:33:39 GMT 1, I'm struggling to see the need to float mount them all as well.
Hlarmy, you need to float mount them, its the best way,if its done right, its worth spending the extra money to get it framed right. Mine cost around ยฃ600 each Ha, you're not the first to tell me that! Why does everyone say that they should be float mounted? What's the name of that particular print Dodo?
This one I can understand with the deckled edges and the spots so close to the edge.
Here's the framed 'Ethisterone' in OC's shop window.
But I can't see that it's essential with this one especially with the signature well away from the edge.
not a ripple in sight !!!
Both look good though.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by ABC on Jan 20, 2012 23:32:30 GMT 1, I was just having a conversation with the wife about Hirst and found myself getting more and more wound up. I had the usual "I don't get it, what's so special about dots" and "it's bloody madness" I then made the mistake of showing her Rothko's work!! It's always interesting trying to explain why you like a piece of art to a non art lover. Even better was when a friend of hers was over for coffee and asked whether I had painted all the stuff on the wall, the reply, no Banksy did.

To a non art lover the spots are no more a painting than a rothko but they are both important and with their own character and place. I LOVE ROTHKO. i also like the spots so much as they appeal to my ocd side with their order.

I'm with your wife on this, especially as he's rehashed it over and over.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by stang on Jan 21, 2012 13:00:45 GMT 1, Meeting with my mate in a couple hours to make a decision. Flights are on hold till tomorrow at noon. Sometimes you just gotta break up the mundane I think! So what was your decision? Are you going for it? For all those interested, they have updated the site with all the screen names and the galleries visited. Currently there are over 700 people registered, about 250 of whom have been to one or more galleries. 100 people have been to two or more galleries and 50 who have visited 3 or more. The most visited gallery is New York 24th St and the least Athens. Three people have already completed all 11. I'm going to visit Davies St today that should put me in the top 50!
I have a feeling the edition is going to be fairly massive! Tough as it may be I think anyone considering this needs to remove any potential print value from the equation and go on the merits of the challenge itself and the spectacle of seeing all these works over a short time frame. If you end up with a memento on your wall that's worth a few quid then fair play, if not you'll still have a memento on your wall that's worth nothing and the memories! I'm still firmly on the fence...

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by sammyman on Jan 22, 2012 6:06:27 GMT 1, Does anyone know where I can find a complete list of official spot print editions, with details?
www.zarts.com/damien-hirst
It is not complete, but there are a few there.
Does anyone know what a personally dedicated print means? I would hate to have my name scribbled across the front of a print.

From the dedicated Hirsts I've seen he dedicates of the bottom on the print on the border.
I have seen a photograph he signed across though, can't imagine him doing that with a print...

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by loucastel on Jan 22, 2012 16:42:29 GMT 1, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading some of the post's on this thread, and the phrase "I don't get it" seems to be popping up quite frequently, and I was just curious to know if most of us actually "get" the message from every piece of art we buy, after all take Banksy' work for example, ask a dozen people what a particular image represent's and you would probably get several different answers, so do they "get it", I'm sure it is true of many works of art that the observer just doesn't "get it" but like's the image anyway, but there again I am in the category of one who has no knowledge of art and has no taste according to a lot of the pseudo-intellectual art critics on here and in media. So back to my original question, do you understand every piece of art you buy?

01/12/2012 03:05 PM "Can you see where Iรขโฌโขm going with this?"Yes...into the land of unnecessary and undeserved artistic complexity. Artworks traded at the level Damien Hirst trades them have become nothing more than 'junk bonds' - items with a tradeable, exchangeable value based solely on the confidence of the market place. Their only requirement (in aesthetic terms) is to be visibly identifiable with the bond issuer. Corporate investors don't care if there's no 'art' interest in them, as long as the bonds were visibly issued by 'Damien Hirst Inc'. As long as the market maintains confidence in them, they'll keep trading them. Such investors, I would suggest, are not fools; they know that there is no 'real' interest or value in them; that they're not really 'popular' or much loved, but as with more traditional junk bonds, the traders will keep playing the game, making profits until the moment the market collapses. The loser, is the last man holding the bond when that market collapse happens. With the acres of publicity Hirst is getting for this particular bond auction (zero stars or five stars - it doesn't matter), I can't see confidence collapsing any time soon. Of course, culture loses out too, when junk bonds are described as 'art works'.

Spot on ( pardon the pun ) ... Whilst still one massive chunk of money, it's still more than half as cheap as i would have had to pay for one on the secondary market!. I am pleased I finally got myself some (expensive) dots, that will actually look good on my wall.
