Jean Pascal, yes that's a Jesse Reno. I have 3 pieces from him - two on wood, one of which is my avatar, and one on canvas. Really love his stuff, too! I also have one of your pieces "The old man" from back in 2008.

The exhibition "Homework", which is dedicated to the oeuvre of the Berlin based artist Evol, is the fourth and last part of the series "In-Between" by Lukas Feireiss.



"In-Between" brings together artistic positions that critically explore spatial discourses in contemporary visual culture – ranging from architecture and installation, to photography and film, painting and illustration. It examines the influential strength of architecture and the built environment on the arts and investigates how built forms are being used and misused, thereby distending and extending space, and potentially offering alternatives to the autonomous presumptions of architecture.



"Homework" presents a variety of Evol's paintings and installations. Architecture and the fabric of the city itself, in manifold variations of complex template work, are reoccuring themes of the artist. The stencil images of buildings, meticulously executed and detailed on recycled cardboard and within the built environment captivate with their conceptual and artistic coherence. Thereby Evol’s use of the iconography of pre-cast concrete buildings for his stencil works are tongue-in-cheek reflections on modernist building methods in architecture and urban planning. In the same way that residential and office buildings are constructed with pre-cast slabs, Evol’s buildings are created by assembling and spray-painting pre-fabricated templates on side.



Evol, Berlin-based artist and trained product designer is best known for his site-specific urban installations and paintings made on reclaimed cardboard. For his public practice he transforms electric meters and street fixtures into miniature, pre-cast housing complexes, using templates to spray paint many layers of his architectural designs. Evol also stencils and paints urban street scenes and buildings onto cardboard, and incorporates its tears, markings, and folds into his compositions as part of the building’s facade.

NEW YORK, NY (June 18, 2015) — Jonthan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Unreal Estate, a series of new works by Berlin-based artist EVOL in what will be his second solo exhibition at the gallery.

EVOL's layered stencil paintings on used cardboard and site specific locations portray unpopulated cityscapes with photographic precision. Drawing in his background in graffiti, he carefully selects materials with a weathered appearance to use as a canvas and applies spray paint to depict the unrenewed state of ordinary housing. Deftly incorporating torn edges, dents, tape fragments, box markings and the exposed corrugated textures of found materials, EVOL achieves convincing architectural illusions that convey elements of urban decay, allowing us to view our surrounding with a new perspective.

In Unreal Estate, EVOL comments on the ambiguity arising from the transformative stages of post-wall, pre-gentrified East Berlin to the new accomplishments of the burgeoning real estate market. The artist describes:

"Society is constantly being pulled into an ever-expanding circuit of consumption. Fast real estate profits in city centers only target an exclusive and wealthy demographic, causing simple housing in traditional working class neighborhoods to also get the "luxury treatment." These homes are often just dumbed in yellow paint and fake wood floods to achieve a certain standard, just enough to multiply the rent. The old dirty fuzz is replaced with something new and shiny, artificial and impersonal. Like a non-place, the traces of existing life, past history and their creators are erased. I see my pieces as portraits of areas within this stage of transition and I search for details and remnants that tell me a neighborhood is still alive."

The set celebrates the 500th Anniversary of Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’, first published in 1516. More’s vision was the first to give a name and form to an idea that has captured the human imagination throughout history: that by imagining a better world is possible, we are empowered to create it.


The prints are 12” (30 x 30cm) and the box size is 33 x 33cm.
