Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by edcase on Nov 14, 2011 18:25:54 GMT 1, Some details of our next event. Hope to see some of you there, you won't be disappointed!
The Future Tense Presents SPECTRA I A Three-Part Survey Of Dynamic Colour Use In Contemporary Art
The Future Tense is pleased to present SPECTRA I, the first of a three-part survey of artists for whom dynamic colour relationships form a central pillar of their practice.
From mediaeval stained glass to Pop Art via Fauvism, bold use of colour has been explored continuously throughout art history. Perhaps the greatest master of colour theory, Paul Klee wrote on the subject extensively and was quoted as saying, โColour is the place where our brain and the universe meet.โ
In a contemporary art world endlessly fascinated with concepts of minimalism and fragility, SPECTRA I explores the artists, mediums and substrates boldly defining the current colour zeitgeist.
Hosted at the Londonewcastle Project Space and curated by The Future Tense, SPECTRA I will be on view from November 24 through December 18 2011, and will feature a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, animation and digital art from a vital international roster of 7 artists:
Lee Bakerโs art practice explores the dichotomy between Japanโs fragile, intricate cultural aesthetic and the relentless forces of urbanisation that increasingly mark its landscape. With influences ranging from the futuristic anime of Makoto Shinkai to the modernist cityscapes of Charlie Sheeler, Bakerโs meticulous paintings present stark visions of the indomitable meta-city against the indiscriminate forces of nature. As well as new paintings, SPECTRA I will see Baker create a site-specific installation.
Adam Ball appears in SPECTRA I fresh from exhibiting at the highly prestigious House of the Nobleman. His work reflects the energy and life of an ephemeral world, echoing the hidden order of nature. The diverse subject matter of his paintings and intricate hand-cut paper works โ from Tropical rainforests to layered microbiological imagery โ are further abstracted through seemingly counter-intuitive use of light and colour, lending an unexpected aura of kitsch, euphoria and energy.
Chuck Elliottโs practice is concerned with a fluid investigation of colour, movement and light. Entirely computer generated, these organic, free-form shapes are cropped, recoloured and enhanced as if editing in a camera view. Hovering between printmaking and photography, Chuck is endeavoring to push back the boundaries of traditional printmaking, with direct digitised drawing and a fluid use of dynamic colour spaces and captured light. Chuck will debut a series of innovative new laser-cut Diasec works at SPECTRA I.
Katrin Fridriks fuses the natural energies of her native Iceland with references to contemporary pop art, architecture and Japanese calligraphy to create a uniquely expressive visual language. Her vivid abstract landscapes envelop space, shape and time, emphasized by a tireless exploration of matter and technique. Fridriks will present a number of new paintings at SPECTRA I, including a significant site-specific installation.
Haroshi is a self-taught Japanese artist, currently based in Tokyo. He creates full-scale, three-dimensional wooden sculptures using intricately layered and carved recycled skateboard decks. His approach to sculpture combines the influence of the time-honoured traditional methods of his homeland with the spirit of innovation inherent in its contemporary culture. SPECTRA I marks the UK debut of Haroshi.
James Marshall aka โDalekโ built an international reputation as a street artist before graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995. Marshall began exhibiting his work across the US before honing his skills as an assistant to celebrated โSuperflatโ artist, Takashi Murakami. Since dropping the Dalek moniker in 2007, his precise and complex geometric paintings and prints have continuously pushed the boundaries of abstraction and colour combination. The Future Tense will publish a limited edition James Marshall gravure etching to mark the launch of SPECTRA I, printed in collaboration with Thumbprint Editions.
Jen Starkโs practice is based on the concepts of replication and infinity, her artwork echoing patterns and intelligent designs found in nature and the theories of colour, math and science. The Miami-based artist's creations incorporate a variety of materials, which produce optically hypnotic effects not unlike traditional mandalas and sacred objects. SPECTRA I marks the UK debut of Jen Stark, who appears courtesy of Cooper Cole Gallery.
SPECTRA I is supported by Londonewcastle, Courvoisier and Peroni Nastro Azzurro.
Details of SPECTRA II will be announced in 2012.

Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by edcase on Nov 15, 2011 11:09:19 GMT 1, Unfortunately Katrin's work just doesn't translate well to print. It's too big a compromise from the textural, almost architectural nature of her work and canvases.
I can say that we have been experimenting with some more interesting print techniques to try to somehow capture/replicate the effect on paper, but we aren't quite there yet!
The flyer image is by Chuck Elliot. Again you really need to see it in person to appreciate it!

Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by edcase on Nov 15, 2011 18:32:43 GMT 1, Will post details of the print shortly. It's still in production so don't want to give inaccurate info. What I can say is that is being printed in collaboration with the same printer who does the amazing Anish Kapoor colour blend etchings, and it's a similar style/process to that, so the quality will be magnificent.

Hello - what time was this as I am very much here and open and have been for some time? I may have popped out for coffee, which would have been very bad timing....
Either way, sorry you couldn't see the show.

Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by edcase on Dec 15, 2011 19:51:24 GMT 1, Its shut again today if anyone else was thinking of wasting their time.
Hi Darren,
As I said, we were open yesterday, and have been open 7 days a week since September 24th, you must have missed me for all of 5 minutes while I got coffee.
Unfortunately last night I woke up at 2.30am in agony with frozen shoulder and this is the first time today I've not been laid out on the floor. I'm sorry for the inconvenience but at the same time please accept that these things happen.
Please all note that I will definitely not be opening tomorrow (Friday) as I'm still very sore, however we will definitely be open all weekend, 12 til 6 - and it is the final weekend of the show. We've had well over 1,000 people through the doors since we opened, and I've been working the gallery myself every day, so please don't try to make it sound like it's never open. As I say I'm very sorry you were inconvenienced but there is absolutely nothing I could do.
regards, Ed

Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by darhart on Dec 15, 2011 20:43:58 GMT 1, Ed im not making it sound like its never open, it just hasn't been on the 2 times ive attempted to go. And then having a bit of a dig at me when all i've done it try and attend your show is rather poor form isnt it? Its people like me (buyers) that make these things possible. Just an apology would have sufficed. Maybe updating the website when its closed, and as suggested by bernard buying a flask would have helped.
(I hope your shoulder improves, I had stabalisation surgery on mine in May)

You sound like an entitled ass Danhart. The poor guy is working the show himself, how dare he take a few moments to himself and grab some coffee or food or whatever. Working in a retail type industry myself, I hate people like you.

Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by darhart on Dec 16, 2011 17:09:22 GMT 1, phearloathing (what an apt name) you are making a huge judgement there aren't you?
Lets make things very clear here, you "hate people like me"?
How did you jump to this amazing conclusion? You seem to point to the fact that it has something to do with the guy "taking a few moments to himself and grabing a coffee or food"
Let me point out that this was at 12:50, the show is advertised at being open from 12:00, thats 50 minutes, it can't open for 50 minutes without thinking "thats it! I have to close the show, pull the shutters accross and lock up so i can grab a coffee!" And you know what, that didn't really bother me that much. Though had a little sign been put up saying "back in 5 minutes" or whatever, it would have been a good idea wouldn't it?
It was anoying as i said, I lost half my lunch break.
Then on here ed posted to say he had stepped out so I knew why the show was shut, I said "no worries" and that I would try again tomorrow.
I did try the next day, later this time at about 2pm and again it was shut, so I had wasted a second lunch break on the trot trying to go to the show. That again was anoying. I then posted on here to let people know that it was shut so anyone else thinking of going wouldn't waste their time as well, and if im honest to vent a little frustration.
What have I done wrong so far?
What really got on my nerves was when it sounded like ed had a bit of a pop at me when all have tried to do is attend the show and not be able to for 2 out of 2 times. I sugested that was "poor form" on ed's part, and believe it is so had a pop back and made a suggestion so he doesn't upset any other potential buyers. That's it.
So please phearloathing, read this post carefully and tell me why with relation to these events you hate people like me so? Or think i'm so me me me me me etc etc.

Fridriks, Jen Stark, Haroshi, James Marshall (LDN), by bernard on Dec 16, 2011 17:58:12 GMT 1, Although i can appreciate Eds need for a coffee and a quick nip out for one (or tea) is ok in my opinion, holding / hosting a show comes with responsibilities and the most basic fundamental one is to be there at the advertised opening times. Get a coffee machine Ed. Good luck with the shoulder.
