Ebay Price Boom!, by KaL976 on Oct 11, 2006 6:49:54 GMT 1, I take your point regarding eMail verification or paper based receipts. However how long will it be before some industrious little scallywag whittles a stamp in his garden shed and starts mass producing very effective copies? Itโs just a thought.
Exactly. If you're looking at spending the current prices to pick up a print/canvas, you need to be damn sure you have a rock solid case for the future. Anything anyone makes can be replicated by a third party if you throw enough money at it, [nevermind all the dink/backdoor prints currently available] what with the way prices are rising, the essential simplicity of screen printing, sourcing the correct paper, stamps, [the internet is a wonderful thing] the anonimity of ebay & the perceived gullibility of some ebay bidders, is bound to attract the more serious forgers at some point. Of course the power still rests with the artist, their agent & estate, as they can always disown it should the prospective buyer get in touch, in the meantime, those that don't get checked out are 'in the wild' & it's very much a case of buyer beware. For example & in no way am I saying anything against legit prints from these establishments, but if for example, in years to come how is one supposed to prove it came from the greenleaf bookshop or santa's ghetto if you don't have the receipt or prov from POW/LAZ? It's not an issue if you just love the image, but let's be realistic, if one just loved the image the local copyshop is a damn sight cheaper
this post is turning into a ramble...
I don't know a vast amount about the high art world, [I'm not entirely sure I know a vast amount about anything actually] but it would seem to me that the sort of people who drop serious money on art do not buy it on ebay. The people stocking galleries & dealers buying for clients want rock solid provenance & pay prices to reflect that & they don't give it a second thought otherwise they wouldn't be buying it in the first place.
Sotheby's had Hirst fakes withdrawn earlier this week, you can't fake a shark in a tank but spots on a canvas? hell yes! that we can do
Bonhams are/were selling a bit of scrap metal for 8K+
A bit of plywood went for ยฃinsert stupid figure here
Personally I think Athena were on to a good thing, just their choice of posters was crap, apart from Tennis Girl obviously
If art really was for the masses they'd be shoving it down our throats at the supermarket checkout by now. All this signed, numbered, stamped, runs of xxx is BS if you only care about the image/message & never plan to sell/pass on, etc.
heh, sod ramble, cue rant...

Ebay Price Boom!, by InactiveX on Oct 13, 2006 2:55:57 GMT 1, Im without receipts for my CND Soldiers and Love Rat. I purchased them both from POW. Not planning on selling but they could provide provenance for me if I request it someday. Right?
Sorry if this has been posted already.
I've just ordered a print from POW (Wed 11 Oct). At the bottom of the confirmation email was:
This order is your proof of purchase. So you might want to print it out as a letter of provenance(and decorate it with glitter and stickers). All orders are held on a database so if you re-sell it we can confirm to the next person that you aren't some sort of chancer. Thank you for your custom.

Ebay Price Boom!, by nikeros1974 on Oct 20, 2006 9:23:50 GMT 1, Must be said that when everything started probably not everyone kept the receipts (who could imagine that a 50 quid print would be worth more than 1k in one year's time?
An authentication session is necessary

Ebay Price Boom!, by Daniel Silk on May 7, 2021 7:35:25 GMT 1, It looks like the prices of Banksy prints on ebay have started to rise even faster over the last few weeks Unsigned Napalm ยฃ296 Unsigned Gangsta Rat ยฃ255 And with most signed pieces now going well over ยฃ1000 I think people are realizing that you cant really afford to wait for a bargain to appear coz if you wait a month the prices have just risen even higher and your dream print becomes more out of reach What do you think? Haaaa

Ebay Price Boom!, by Arty Farty 15 on May 7, 2021 7:57:13 GMT 1, Looks like I started buying at exactly the right time! It's kinda scary owning something worth over a grand that's not a car. I have just been told it would cost ยฃ2000+ to get ma Mini through the MOT So its gonna be scraped Now I need to sell some Banksy's to help pay for a new car Keep an eye out for bits of my beloved Mini coming up for sale soon on ebay
Wowza! I hope the mini is still holding up well.
