Where is Banksy?, by mybeautifulsunset on Apr 12, 2007 16:13:51 GMT 1, It's funny how people say they know Banksy, and they make up stuff about what Banksy actually looks like. For all you know, he may not be from Bristol, he may not even be white, or "he" may be more than one person.
For all you know, Banksy may be some regular real estate dealer, who lives in a mansion with his wife, 2 kids and a shaggy dog.

Where is Banksy?, by blacksy on Apr 12, 2007 17:29:37 GMT 1, Hmm, Finding out exactly who he is may not be so tricky afterall. Has anyone thought about pulling a companies house report or Lazinc, they like any other company would have to file their accounts, and in doing so you would find out who got paid what over the past financial year. Im guessing a certain Micallef, and Mr Banks would have been paid in money rather than "time in leui" meaning that all the money is accountable and legal. ............................................. just a thought!

Where is Banksy?, by fautebol on Apr 12, 2007 17:36:52 GMT 1, I see a big difference between the question who is Banksy and where/what is he doing? I think reados just asked the second question. I don't have an answer to both of them (Mr Banks? When I read Robin Banks in a newspaper, I just laughed so much, truly excellent)
That being said does someone know if and where I can prints of the pictures of his agent? I really do like some pictures he made.

Where is Banksy?, by stillborncrisps on Apr 12, 2007 20:07:32 GMT 1, I was pondering the other day, if/when his identity is revealed, what would happen to the value of his stuff?
Would it go up, down, or stay the same.
People may say it would stay the same 'coz it's all about the art' but I reckon his appeal is more than the art - he's a mischievious little tinker, and that makes his art all the more special. So if the mystery of the man is lost, surely the bubble would burst.
Opinions???

Where is Banksy?, by andrewd on Apr 12, 2007 20:46:16 GMT 1, Banksy's identity is well know to a lot of people ( not me )including POW LAZ and a lot of the art world media. It was telling that the Sunday Times article a few weeks ago mentioned that the journalist had recieved an e-mail from Banksy prior to the article being published. The article went on to say that 'people are not supposed to know who Banksy is" rather than no one knows who Banksy is. I imagine that if Banksys identity is made public then it won't make a jot of difference in the long run. Great art, good management and positive PR would see to that

I'm inclined to agree. His anonymity is fun and mysterious and all, but I think people will come to see the bigger picture, i.e., his talent and his work.

Where is Banksy?, by Mobu on Apr 12, 2007 21:57:52 GMT 1, Banksy is a bristol boyo for sure... question is if people really want to know who he is? I am really interested why no one has bothered to find out more about him.. journalists always dig up the dirty stuff on people, so why not banksy.
To tell you guys the truth, I dont want people to know who he is because then his stuff wont be worth what it is.. part of the high prices is that he remains anonymous. But I do want him to contine his art revolution.. spray paint more to make up for all the work which is being torn down!!!!
Make our cities look more interesting banksy!

Where is Banksy?, by mybeautifulsunset on Apr 12, 2007 23:45:04 GMT 1, You're right, ThursdayFeeling! Banksy could be any of us, sitting here chatting in the Forum, and probably laughing his head off.
But if Banksy were Robert Banks from Bristol, wouldn't it be far too obvious? His identity would have been be uncovered long ago. "Facts" are indeed stranger than Fiction.

Where is Banksy?, by BK83 on Apr 12, 2007 23:57:03 GMT 1, I think this much we definately know about Banksy. he is not a collective in the same way Faile are a collective -- he is an individual however, that is not to say that some of his street work and maybe even indoor stuff is not done without a little input from friends -- it would undoubtedly have to be to sustain his level of success.
He has himself gone by the name Robin Banks -- whether or not that too is an alias, I don't know -- but I do know for sure that he has personally used the name Robin Banks in reference to himself.
A few people on this forum either know Banksy personally or at least know him by association.

Where is Banksy?, by pezlow on Apr 13, 2007 9:01:02 GMT 1, Banksy has retained his anonymity because graffiti is criminal damage and is an offence. In the early days I expect he was probably really worried about the fines and stuff that could be imposed but nowadays the anonymity has certainly added an element of mystery to the whole Banksy scene and probably does make him more interesting to media. But most graf artists will try and maintain some anonymity, albeit with different levels of success.
For example most people on this forum will know who Eine really is but we respect that desire for him to have some anonymity.

What I don't understand is how Obey (Shepard Fairey) can be so 'out', and yet still avoid legal trouble since he's still doing street work.

Where is Banksy?, by pezlow on Apr 13, 2007 13:44:49 GMT 1, I guess maybe because he is so out and so popular that the police can't prove that he actually did the criminal damage. Unless caught in the act he can just say that he sells posters and that someone he sold a poster to must have put up the work.

i was wondering this same thing about Fairey. he even posts pictures on his website of places that he claims he hit up!! surely you would think that could be used against him....though i'm glad it's not.

"caught in the act" i can understand, but it seems people were saying that you can also be "caught after the act" if they can show that it was your tag/art.
seems like they could be arresting him at least once a month just based on what he posts on his website!
which raises another question, in most parts of the US, doing graffiti is a felony (like murder, rape, etc), but i'm not sure what wheat pasting is considered ? ? ? is it a lessor crime and that is why many "streetartists" do them instead of graf?

i don't know. Shepard doesn't "tag" his pieces and his posters and stickers are widely distributed(you can even download stencils and sticker jpg's off his website). I'd think that without catching him in the act, you would have a very hard time proving it was actually him that put the piece up.
Anyone with access to a Kinko's copy shop could easily produced a large Obey Giant poster for wheat pasting.
That's all part of the Obey 'campaign'.

yea, that's why it seemed odd to me that people are saying you can get busted after the act if they can show it's your tag/art. as you pointed out, anyone can go around and throw up Banksy stencils or Obey giants.
to go even further than a tag/art piece, i had a friend in college who used to put up his full name and social security number (!!!). he never got busted, though in this day and age of identity theft, i don't think i would advise this method.
