Why oh why...., by corblimeylimey on Apr 9, 2007 12:48:27 GMT 1, Silky, can people who do not want to take part in the respect system request to be taken out of it? hmmmm, I aint very kean in taking people out of it really Coz it takes that person that one step closer to being banned. If they ask to be removed from the respect system, all it tells me is that they are afraid of being marked down by what they post dunt give me much hope for them if ya get what I mean
O.K. I guess that makes sense.

Why oh why...., by pjotr101 on Apr 9, 2007 12:51:41 GMT 1, Except when you as admin choose to ban someone for raising a legitimate question. Please don't ban me for participating in the debate. ;D as long as your not gonna tell me about how much you help people on the forum, and how you pass on your knowledge, when you have only made 5 posts in the last month including this one
No worries, I never claim to be of any use to anyone.

Why oh why...., by arcam on Apr 9, 2007 12:53:38 GMT 1, I think it's a great forum. I don't pretend to be the most knowledgeable person on art because I'm not. ;D But I feel I've thrived off learning from the people here.

Why oh why...., by corblimeylimey on Apr 9, 2007 12:55:48 GMT 1, spot on corblimey. i've found this to be an amazingly friendly and open place to discuss banksy and art in general - its just a group of people having a chat about something they love
In the most part thats exactly what it is, and sometimes involves having a laugh too, this is the only forum I participate in (well, apart from similar one's set up by silky, Dolk etc) I've looked at other forums (not art ones) and they do appear to get quite nasty quite quickly.
This is a friendly forum, and although there are the obvious internet 'dangers' I feel there is more trust here, I've had good dealings with a few people and a couple of weeks ago met a member when he was in my part of the world.

Why oh why...., by hungrig on Apr 9, 2007 13:27:32 GMT 1, silky, I can understand you disagreeing with views expressed by other forum members but I don't think thats a good enough reason to ban them from the forum...?? They were not banned coz I disagreed with anything my views dunt come in to the decision We have been over this sort of thing many times in the past, long before many of you were on this forum. Talking for myself - Any decisions made on the running of this forum are made in a very very simple way, What is best for the general happiness, and continued growth of the forum.
Silky,
I must say that I agree with many who have participated on this thread. Banning members, especially experienced and knowledgeable ones, can only be detrimental to this forum and the assistance it provides others.
If the two members were not banned because you disagreed with them, why exactly were they banned?
Forgive me if I am being stupid, but I simply don't understand how the act of raising legitimate questions conflicts with "the general happiness, and continued growth of the forum".
It would seem unfair if the fact that "We have been over this sort of thing many times in the past" were used as an excuse to stifle debate, especially when newer members to this forum have not had the opportunity to express their views on the matter.
I would encourage you to reconsider your ban.

Why oh why...., by Daniel Silk on Apr 9, 2007 13:46:48 GMT 1, For this forum to continue as the friendly place it has become, it falls to me to make the really hard decisions about whats best in the long run for everyone Whatever I do, is never gonna please everyone, so I can only do my best
Four people have been banned this week! now thats more I think than have been done in the whole of last year. A few of those people have been members of this forum for some time, but have drifted away, and now seem to only reappear when they want to stir up trouble The internet is a strange place where people seem to think they can let out their frustrations on others, well thats not gonna happen on here.
I guess Im the one that must take the flack, but Im only doing it to protect the more silent majority on the forum.

Why oh why...., by tomhills1 on Apr 9, 2007 14:08:15 GMT 1, right, i must say something. all those who are having a go at silky should perhaps pipe down and think carefully about what they want out of this forum.
now the two people in question were not banned for going against what silky thinks, perhaps abuse of the system? i started a thread on saturday asking why we were being censored and then not being explained to as to why threads, members, posts etc are being removed. i'm still here, though the thread is not.
i feel i got on with monkeypuzzle really well, good knowledge, superb collection and a wicked sense of humour. police, i did not know so well but he was invaluble when it came to people querying some ebay listings. what was going on behind the scenes that made silky feel the need to remove them permanently rather than just cut their respect option, only they and he know.
what i can say for sure, is that this forum is not somewhere you dare not question the authorities for fear of getting banned. more so, the greater good is more important than one member, no matter how valuble they have been.
i for one will miss monkeypuzzle greatly, at the same time i trust silky to do the right thing, even if that is not always the most popular course of action.

No arguments with you, lesbianwednesdays.
My view is that your thread should not have been removed. The thread as a whole raised some very valid points and concerns. The fact it was discussing censorship before being deleted is ironic to say the least.
What I don't understand is how such a discussion goes against the "greater good" you refer to. [Historically, this reference to the greater good has been used numerous times by very different regimes (usually the less pleasant ones) as justification for their treatment of dissidents.] I also feel we deserve an explanation as to why it was removed, simply as a courtesy to those who spent time and energy contributing to the thread, as well as to others interested in its contents.
Likewise, I would be curious to know why policeaware and monkeypuzzle got banned. If Silky believes they were guilty of "abuse of the system", then fair enough. It's his prerogative; he is the decision-maker. But at the very least, let others receive confirmation that abuse of the system was in fact the case. I would argue that is only fair.

Why oh why...., by funkrye on Apr 9, 2007 15:03:04 GMT 1, Come on, get real. Police aware and monkeypuzzle were only participating in a discussion which they didn't start. Both had a good knowledge and only tried to help people on this forum. Neither of them had a ego just because they had been into banksy alot longer than most or because they were old standing members. Banning them is totally over the top.
This is unfair for all the members of this forum who value what they had to say.
And lurkers are more likely to participate in a discussion if they don't think they might get banned for disagreeing with the boss or getting hit with loads of negatives.

do you know what, i started that thread and went to bed. when i logged on next someone had told me it had gone. i stand wholeheartedly by what i said that night but in the meantime i PM'd silky with my concerns that i had raised and although not totally happy with the response, i accept it.
yes it would be nice to know exactly why MP and police were banned but then all we'd do is debate the why's and wherefore's all day long. this is not a democratic forum and we do not have a say in who stays and who goes, surely we all know that? if they have been removed, it is because they did/were actively behaving outside of the rules of this site.
only last week silky bumped all the "be nice to each other/respect each other" topics in the what's this forum about section. so obviously some things have been going on for a while, this is not out of the blue.
whether we like it or not this is not a forum regulated by it's members, it's done by one person. but please do not keep turning this subject into a witch hunt against silky. it also serves to no purpose keep debating a topic that is totally futile. it only winds people up and turns this forum in to more of a place jade goody and ok magazine would have a field day with the gossip, rather than a forum about mostly street art, written by and written for intelligent people ( i hope ;D)
surely we are all on here for the right reasons, if some aren't then that decision stops with one person and we either accept that or we don't.
p.s this thread will soon be removed as it serves no purpose but a load of conjecture and no talk of art. so don't waste your time replying.
p.p.s it's raining in kent.

i agree mostly, but what is to stop "lurkers" just hitting people with a load of negatives without contributing to the forum as a whole.
my advice would be, if you have a specific question, ask silky via a PM and you'll be surprised - you will get a reply. any form of sensationalist witch hunt soves nothing.
they broke the rules, they got banned. it wasn't for going against silky end of. i started that thread and have been re-assured there a certain reasons for their removal, it's not my place to say why. again it solves nothing. can we move on?

What I dont think is good for the forum as a whole is for a small group to keep going on and on about how they lost some respect points, and why does it work like that, Why has Silky done that, I think it should be like this
Remember this is a Forum about Banksy and Street/Graffiti Art ;D lets get back to the subject shall we Thank you ;D

Do you really think Silky would ban anyone with no good reason? Is he mentally unstable? who knows? (see point 1, none of us know the facts). I say probably not. Regardless and at the end of the day, he's the admin so if he is mental and feels like banning everyone, that is his prerogative.
Something went on, who knows what, I don't and therefore can't really pick a side. So.... I'm going to do what I wish the rest of you would do and zip it. There are way too many people forming opinions without much underlying grasp on the issue (I don't claim to have a grasp on it either) and honestly that makes you look like a p*ick.
**my respect is at 12 as of this post, let's see if we can get a measure of the sensibility and maturity of the membership (new hordes and oldies) after I press "Post Reply"**

Why oh why...., by Daniel Silk on Apr 9, 2007 15:30:49 GMT 1, Right, I think its time to lock this thread now.
It aint going anywhere, and its only of interest to a very small number of people. Any new people coming on here would read this and wonder what the hell is going on
