ICONIC GRAFFITI ARTIST 'PHIBS' TO DO WALL IN LEICHHARDT
In the lead up to a solo exhibition of mixed media artworks at Oh Really Gallery 23 -- 29 April, Australian graffiti artist Phibs, will paint a wall in Leichhardt.
Oh Really Gallery have partnered up with Look Print, a large scale printing business in Leichhardt, who became instant patrons by erecting a 6m by 3m billboard on the side of their building for Oh Really Gallery artists to utilise.
The ongoing partnership has been dubbed 'Project Ugly' by Oh Really Gallery Director, Dan O'Toole. "An old lady walked past the wall which had a new artwork going up and she said 'that's ugly'. The name stuck."
'When Phibs showed interest in exhibiting in Sydney, we were eager to have him do the Project Ugly Wall.' Says Dan O'Toole. Phibs is a graphic designer originally from Sydney, who now works full time as an artist in Melbourne. His recognisable graffiti style has a tribal feel with an intricate exploration of bold characters and patterning. Phibs is a traditional graffiti artist who has been commissioned by corporations to do large signs and murals.
Previous Phibs works can be viewed at www.phibs.com
However Phibs also enjoys doing character work which he describes as being more people friendly. 'It's about nature, animals and fantasy creatures that I make up in my head. Whereas my straight graffiti work or tags are often threatening to people because they don't understand it.'
Phib's work is held in many collections and he has done walls in New York, Berlin, India and many cities in Australia. Phib's left Sydney five years ago, disgruntled by the dwindling art scene. 'Things are starting to happen again in Sydney' Says Phibs.
Fans of Phibs can watch him work on the Project Ugly Wall (behind 277 Parramatta Road CNR Albion Street and Catherine St, Leichhardt) in the week leading up to the exhibition at Oh Really Gallery 23 - 29 April. The exhibition will include a mix of mediums including aerosol, acrylic, watercolour, paint, canvas, board, steel and masonite boxes.
For more info, artist interview or images please contact Jacinta Walpole on 0422 033 055 or ohreallypromo@gmail.com

Visit SYDNEY ππ² Australia Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Stupid Krap on May 4, 2009 4:13:06 GMT 1, The Rooftop of Stupidkrap.com / Worlds End Studio is looking great at the moment.
Sydney central gets buffed quickly, but our Rooftop near Central Station, Surry Hills is an amazing spot to catch work that lasts by some of the greatest Australian street artists. Pieces are refreshed every couple of weeks depending on who is passing through town.
Building workmen set up a hut recently which got covered instantly. Fresh space! The builders think its awesome.
The pix here show current pieces by Phibs, Deb, Meggs, Kid Zoom, Kiss Kiss, and Creon.

Visit SYDNEY ππ² Australia Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Stupid Krap on May 5, 2009 8:45:21 GMT 1, Yeah Meggs was in town for the semi-permanent exhibition. Ron English was up there with Ben Frost and Kid Zoom around that time, but they were working on the Adshell posters. These went up around Sydney last couple of weeks...check out the stupidkrap.com video page for the Ron English vid with pix of the rooftop.

My name is LC Beats, I'm from Sydney, I'm 19 and I make graffiti claymation films. My first graffiti claymation movie is called Mayhem in May Lane I'd like to let you know about my latest Hip Hop claymation which is called Kaos in King St. It will be available on DVD in June 2010.
The film has taken me 12 months to create.
It features charicatures of 4 of Sydney's pioneering graffiti artistsβ Teazer, Pnash, Phibs and Mistery showcasing their art on a small scale.
This 20 minute film shows the impact of the recently enacted anti-graffiti laws, this new law states that any person caught in possesion of an aerosol spray can be jailed for their art.
The film is sponsored by graffiti supply shop 567 King in Newtown, and Australias aerosol paint company Ironlak.
Here's the trailer
