Falling Prices, by corblimeylimey on Mar 14, 2007 20:41:55 GMT 1, Has any one else noticed the cheap prices on ebay for lots of non Banksy stuff ?
eg Insect - The Kid, US and UK versions, recently a Gold Large Head (US) went for ยฃ28 and a UK Full Kid went for ยฃ89
Eelus - Chewbarbers as low as ยฃ50 but generally not much more than ยฃ60, Wotulookin at Slate ยฃ83 (eelus is going to be selling for ยฃ75)
Eric the Dog - going for nearly ยฃ10 less than they cost from POW
Blek Le Rat - TMWWTW ยฃ300, (what it cost originally)
Nick Walker - barely making cost, sometimes lower (lesroy's Baby Moll)
I know this doesn't apply to every artist or even every work by an artist but it does make you think that it's no big worry if you miss something as you can pick it off the bay for not much more (even less in some cases).
Banksy is an exception, although I paid ยฃ500 for my Jack & Jill (framed) from Art Republic in Aug 2006, and it was worth a steady ยฃ750 since September/October, the price is now all over the place, ยฃ587 for the last one and ยฃ750 for the one before that.
Any views & thoughts on what's happening?

Falling Prices, by stuey09 on Mar 14, 2007 20:49:28 GMT 1, IMHO it's because we have a lot of scalpers who greedily hoovered up everything they could lay their hands on, and now they're having difficulty selling some mediocre prints. I'm looking forward to watching the price of Nick's Black Mona, once the first couple have gone off ebay.

Falling Prices, by tomhills1 on Mar 14, 2007 20:59:08 GMT 1, it seem to me CBL that the short-term speculators have shot themselves in the foot. they hoped to bag a few prints, sell them at a small profit and buy what they're really interested in/bag more than one banksy and make a bigger profit.
the real investors have seperated the wheat from the chaff: all signed editions are going schizo, and old classics are beginning to really show themselves as much sought after works.
if you notice, the prints that are fluctuating the most are, the more recent ones in larger editions that will get more and more popular in time. specifically the ones you've mentioned, j&j and also flags. as more people who want to keep them aquire them the supply will dry up and as new people come into the market these will be the images that are right up there on their lists. hence the reason why some go for good money, to real fans fighting over them, and others less so because the market is a little swamped at that point.
applause, grannies and a few other prints seem to have levelled off (toxic mary, love rat too) and may not rise again unless a massive surge of new interest is generated.
back to the original point i think quite a few chancers just need to pay their credit card bills!

Your post makes a lot of sense, I'm quite happy for prices to level off (even though I have a vested interest by owning Grannies, Applause, Flag & J&J) I'm not going to be selling them any time soon (never say never though) and also it'll give me more of a chance to get a Flying Copper at some point in the future.

Falling Prices, by tomhills1 on Mar 14, 2007 21:21:39 GMT 1, i wouldn't worry CBL about any bottoming-out of the market just a few prints that have peaked in terms of short-term gains. now is definetly a good time to invest a good chunk of money in a top notch unsigned print, flying copper is just that.
i think it was lesroy who recently gave his pick of "proper" banksy's, mine would be; rude copper, HND, WSM, love is in the air (my holy grail), happy choppers, monkey queen and bombhugger too. out of all of those i'd only want to own a few but they for me are the timeless images that will transcend whatever is en vogue.
if there is a classic on you're must have list, now is the time to buy. p.s i've written this one handed whilst feeding the baby so apologies if it's a bit hard to read.

Falling Prices, by finsburyparkranger on Mar 14, 2007 21:40:08 GMT 1, You know you've really got to be carefull buying unsigned art even with provinance if you care about it being an investment as well. My dad was friends with Sidney Nolan, the Ausie artist back in the 1940's and he gave my dad an original painting. The painting was of a man in the foreground feeding a horse way in the distance on the mountain, it was playing with perspective. It was signed but the signature was done with some wierd ink (Sydney was experimenting). Anyway after 60 years the signature disappeared. We could prove that Dad used to share a flat with sidney and that he worked for his wife and that they were good friends. However in the end the lack of signature dramatically reduced the price of the print. It sold for ยฃ7000 but would have gone for closer to 10 times that amount with a signature and some.
I would say now is a great time to buy SIGNED Banksy's. From my experence the price between signed and none signed is going to widen much more over time, even with exceptional provinance.
Thats why i made sure to get a signed golf sale back in 2004.

Falling Prices, by corblimeylimey on Mar 14, 2007 21:46:06 GMT 1, Good advice finsburyparkranger but not a lot of people can afford signed, myself included (unless I can get Trollies for ยฃ500), I'm not that bothered about my Banksy prints going up very much a little increase will be fine by me, it's not really an investment more so an enjoyment, but if you've got the money to mix the two good luck.

Falling Prices, by tadghostal on Mar 14, 2007 21:51:35 GMT 1, YAY! I just bought a Flying Copper.
Trying to think of the last time that LW wrote something that I've really disagreed with. Once again, it seems like he's spot on.
My list is short, but to me, very sweet:
Grin Reaper. Love Is In The Air.
I'm not a greedy man. 3 or 4 really great prints from an indisputable rock-star of street art would be enough for me.
And as has been pointed out many, many times in the past---POW has been able to sell a ton of stuff that otherwise would not have generated much interest had it not been for the association with Banksy. Unfortunately, association with greatness might kick open some doors for you, but it won't do all the work for you. Nobody else in the POW "stable" (as the ebayers are so fond of saying) comes anywhere close to the appeal of Banksy en masse--sure, there are a lot of fans among the relatively small art-fan crowd found on boards like this, but none of them are likely to have their books sold at Urban Outfitters or Crate and Barrel any time soon. Banksy is just so accessible, so brilliant, and so brash that he's head and shoulders above the rest. They say that high-tide lifts all boats, but my feeling is low-tide is going to leave a lot of the 2nd and 3rd tier artists/prints high-and-dry.
All that is to say: If you are a true fan of those lesser prints, you're likely to always find reasonable deals. And it probably will continue to be difficult to find the really great Banksy prints.
Speaking of that, would you fellas STOP telling people to keep their Grin Reapers?! How the hell is a guy supposed to *ever* get one with you tools banging up any chance that comes around?!

Falling Prices, by tomhills1 on Mar 14, 2007 22:06:32 GMT 1, well done jay i'm made up for you. my house ain't big enough for that badboy, i'm pretty green right now! as for a grin, keep saving and make sure you nick one soon. as FPR said, the signed editions are in danger of going silly and being bought exclusively by professional investors and galleries.
bombhugger, it will come for you i'm sure, these things seem to come in cycles. once one goes up a load more seem quick to cash in. good luck fella.
one handed typing again, sorry.

Falling Prices, by RBK on Mar 14, 2007 22:55:16 GMT 1, Agree with many of the posts already. Think people are unloading panic buys and the prices are indicative of people finally making the distinction between the OK prints and GREAT prints.
Based on the ebay Banksy price tracking I do for certain prints, it is certainly a great time to buy unsigned Banksys. I think the reason there isn't much available for sale is that most collectors have obtained the prints they truly want coupled with the fact people have no intention of selling the ones they have.

Falling Prices, by Vsix on Mar 15, 2007 0:39:16 GMT 1, I think the price has dropped on these certain prints due to a lack of demand, obviously there are less buyers than the blaggers had hoped for, so the prints are selling for less. Perhaps these buyers have maxed out on their cards and would prefer to wait for the imminent flood of banksy's that will be on the market soon!! ...there is the odd banksy bargain about though!

Falling Prices, by goffy on Mar 15, 2007 2:01:22 GMT 1, I have a signed Gangsta Rat and Golf Sale. G.S. is my favourite out of the two and in the future will be seen as a classic Banksy image. It was the first Banksy print I had seen, it was in an article in Time Out about POW in 2003.

Falling Prices, by ricosg11 on Mar 15, 2007 23:35:00 GMT 1, aanother interesting point that could be discussed is that for certain artists their early works will 99% of the time be worth less than works from their prime. Im not saying what part of his career Banksy might be in but just a though and a run on sentence.

Falling Prices, by dwight on Mar 16, 2007 6:45:37 GMT 1, it's weird as there doesn't seem to be a lot to buy at the moment, i've been waiting for a bombhugger to pop up for weeks and weeks and what with another 3000 prints to be released (??!!!!!ยฃ$%%$ ??ยฃf**kINHurrYUpยฃ"! ?**&^%$$ยฃ ?) a good 750-1000 of which will be on ebay I think prices will maybe fall a little more....but then again who the f**k knows.
Completely agree Bombhugger, I forecast a drop in prices for unsigned LA prints if all of them come available at once...
