Cheer Up Time, by biggayal on Jun 19, 2008 9:25:10 GMT 1, I just don't 'get' the Parla - it's a load of old squiggles to me.. The Neate is the absolutley beautiful, one of the nicest images I've seen..... I'm also really liking the Choe water colour & Defaced PopTart - quality collection that must make you very happy

Cheer Up Time, by Prescription Art on Jun 19, 2008 10:52:52 GMT 1, Cocteau101 that Parla is by far the best I have seen of his work and in my books is better than the Neate (and I am a bigger Neate fan than Parla). That said the Neate is stunning. What a great collection.
Without wanting to piss on Joe's parade... I've heard so many people raving about this Parla piece! I absolutely agree that on a computer screen it looks utterly bitching, and seeing a picture of it after the opening is what made Parla click with me & get my arse down there to see for myself.
HOWEVER... when I got to the show, I found it slightly underwhelming in the flesh. What you see is what you get, and there's not really any texture to it. A lot of the pieces that didn't translate so well to a JPG had much more depth in real life & were far far stronger than this one.
I'm not denying for one moment that this is a fucking amazing painting, and I would absolutely love to own it myself... i've just read so many comments saying that this is THE defining Parla, and I don't think that's true. It doesn't have the sense that you're looking at 50 years of history on a canvas that many of his others do. No offence though Cocteau, it's a great painting.

HS - no prob. As I've said before each to their own. I think the reaction comes partly from the fact that it was very different to some of his other pieces when first seen. I have seen a similar painting that is absolutely gorgeous and to be honest I'd be delighted to have any of his work let alone this one. But to me it is the defining piece of his work that I have seen as it seems to me to be a concentration and distillation of the ideas that underpin his art. To me it is simply beautiful and I hope many people enjoy looking at it.

Cheer Up Time, by scavos on Jun 19, 2008 22:46:32 GMT 1, Thanks for sharing your amazing collection there cocteau. Good to see that Beejoir again. Still a great piece IMO. Pick of the bunch for is the Neate by a country mile. I'm certainly not a fan of all his work, although I do see what the fuss is, (his most recent street piece for example) but your piece there is absolutely amazing. The colours really do it for me. How about a pic of your other Denning?

Grimshaw's stuff is collage if you mean only that something is stuck on something else. But it's not really what I think of as collage. If memory serves me right, he does two paintings, cuts one up, and sticks small oblongs of one on to the other to create one piece. The overall effect is fantastic - not 3D, but it gives the piece an unusual texture - parts of the image are more defined than others. In the flesh the effect is very stricking. As for it's place in this scene, there are many artists appreciated by those of us that enjoy street art that are not strictly street artists. If this forum only considered/appreciated pieces by street artists, it would not imo be better for it. 2p c

Cheer Up Time, by Cocteau 101 on Jun 20, 2008 16:48:51 GMT 1, The Baglione is stunning in the flesh and massive, I was thinking of letting it go to fund another purchase but in the end didn't have the heart.
