Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by snausages on May 18, 2009 20:11:28 GMT 1, I pretty much agree Lee but then again it's almost fact that the price of Banksy and anything or any artists associated with this movement became wildly speculative. I still think many people have a warped perspective of the art world prices etc. because of this. But I wonder how many years it may take for certain pieces to ever achieve the same level they once did and if it will happen in my lifetime.

And you can replace Banksy's name with Warhol in the quote above or any other artist, stocks, houses, etc. We witnessed the greatest speculative bubble the world has ever seen across many different items that humans cherish and are now in the midst of the deleveraging process. To complicate matters further we've got the central banks and elected officals of the world doing everything in their power to fight this process with more ammunition than most of us can (or want to) comprehend. None of us knows how this will conclude and all we can do is prepare for the worst (have as little or zero debt to our names) and hope for the best. Nice pictures on the walls are just that and I'm more guilty than most of taking this hobby way too seriously at times. But those same pictures make for a pleasant escape for our minds to relax and contemplate the things we choose at night and on the weekends.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by snausages on May 18, 2009 21:05:02 GMT 1, But while prices for Warhol and other artists were run ridiculous, Warhols undeniable legendary status could be used as justification. Meanwhile we had artists here that are pretty much nobodies who were selling screenprints on ebay for more money than established blue chip artists were getting for their prints direct from their galleries. The Banksy effect as they liked to call it. This certainly happened in all parts of the art world, but my point is that there were degrees of excess and they varied from here to there but urban art was exploited one of the worst probably and the naive clientele that was buying it I'm not sure still has a clue as they 'wait it out.' It's not just a matter of when prices will return to normal for Banksy which may take decades imo, but I don't think they'll return at all for many of these artists.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by etched on May 18, 2009 22:21:31 GMT 1, Thx coach, I've obviously spent far too much time studying Warhol so I might as well be helpful when I can. thanks Lee3 - i was offered this screen print from the ladies and gentleman series last month - its a likeable print but a bit large for my humble bedsit - i have no idea on the value/desireability of this particular image/series. it was framed to museum standard by john jones - guy was looking for 4k ... any opinions?

Etched:
That is one of the better images in that portfolio and it most recently traded for $2,500 in November '08. That print series and the canvases too have always been a difficult sell. They have traded with regularity and have been bought in with regularity too. Their high price was around $9k. They traded around $6k more often than not over the past year. I think $4k is a fair offer. If I had to have this image in my collection in this environment, I would only be willing to spend $2,500 on it however as (like anything else) the pricing has come in. Good luck

Imho, your offer was more than fair and high if anything. As to why they are a difficult sell, they just aren't his strongest body of work and there are tons of them. These canvases are everywhere so top dollar is never paid for them because they are anything but rare. If memory serves there was gigantic one in an evening sale in the past year or two which did bring in a couple million but that is not the norm. Perhaps the transexual is a turn off to some, I don't know. He was a portrait artist at this point in his career and the market has in essence stated that this is not one of his better groups of portraits and I agree. The flipside to that is one can get a Warhol for "cheap" and I can appreciate that attraction as I too shared that mindset when I began collecting.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by discoduster on Apr 6, 2010 15:06:21 GMT 1, Looking to buy one of the iconic Campbells Soup prints but after a online search there seems to be a myriad of copies available.
I'm a poor peasant boy but I'm after something more than a standard poster repro, something like a numbered copy.
I've tried the Warhol museum but they only seem to have oversized giclees but don't say if they are numbered or limited in any way.
Any info would be greatfully received.

Even with these muti, there seems to be a few copies (I think). Currently on Ebay for example there are loads of Marilyns from "Sunday B Morning" from Germany. If I remember rightly, the same seller had a load of these going over a year ago when a member on here was selling his. Not sure what the story is myself.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by ricobenfico on Apr 6, 2010 15:36:25 GMT 1, Another thing I can't quite get my head around. Being in the similar position as most if not all folk on this forum, I can't afford a Warhol print(!) So the next alternative would be a Sunday B Morning as theomen has hanging above. However, why pay the SBM prices when again, an unlimted 'poster' at a fraction of that cost could well do and mean the same?

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by DOH on Apr 6, 2010 15:45:14 GMT 1, Rico....not entirely sure that Sunday B Morning do or did Soup Cans, they are not displayed on their website. The difference BTW SBM and a poster is that they are silkscreens (printed on museum board) using more contemporary colour interpretations of Warhol's work.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by lee3 on Apr 6, 2010 16:43:34 GMT 1, From *my* vantage point the Sunday B Morning prints are nothing more then licensed (and therefore expensive) copies . It's like buying a new car and the minute you walk off the lot, its lost half its value. They are expensive because they are licensed through the Foundation. If one can tell the difference between a SBM print and a nice $40 ebay copy, you've got a better eye then I do and neither is going to appreciate much from the price you pay while both will probably depreciate over the long term.
As for the price of Warhol prints, many are quite affordable (if one defines a $2,500 print as affordable) within the silly context of art price discussions due to the enormous edition size. The original soup cans have never achieved prices anywhere near the Marilyn's or Mao's which are his two most expensive. There are 5k signed soup can prints with 20 different kinds of soup each numbered to 250. Depending upon condition those will cost you from $5k to $30k with Tomato soup being the expensive. Average price today is probably around $15k for the 20 signed soupcan prints completed in '68 and '69. Unfortunately, your timing isn't terribly good right now as Warhol prints went through the moon last week at auction (your best avenue to source his prints imho) and given what's coming up in May, we may all have sticker shock in short order.
As I mentioned previously, *I* wouldn't pay up for the SBM prints which may not be the same case for you. If $15k is way out of the budget for this image, which it would be for most, then I would look for as nice of a sub $100 replica that you can find. Understand that aside from the two editions completed in '68 & '69 none of the others will retain their value over the long term. This site is a wonderful tool to look around and see what you like and you may be surprised to learn just how many of them can be hanging in your home signed for well under $5k.
