There are more fake Warhols in auctions than real ones.
There are a few threads on here about collecting his work, more so about the Sunday B Morning prints, as there are a few types

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Pattycakes on Nov 2, 2020 21:43:40 GMT 1, Does anyone have any entry level Warhol pieces for sale or quality ephemera? Anyone have good leads to source this stuff? Does anyone know of a good guide for collecting this stuff? Thanks! What is your budget? You'd be surprised what you can buy for a relatively small sum. I'd recommend avoiding Sunday B Morning, they are little more than reproductions, fine if you want decoration, but frankly not worth the time, or money.

Am I right in thinking the Sunday B Morning prints are the actual screen prints from the originals and were licensed to be produced after but then they fell out? After that they were legally allowed to continue printing them?

The first run of Marilyns used the same colour codes and were initially authorised but prior to distribution Warhol pulled the plug, these are black stamped and some are signed. The modern blue stamps have no connection with Warhol and are simply nice replicas. I have a factory edition soup can and Sunday B Morning replica and I doubt most people could tell the difference

I'm trying to avoid SBM prints for now.
Looking at spending a max budget of $5K which I know mainly relegates me to unsigned pieces or ephemera.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by als33 on Nov 3, 2020 1:27:31 GMT 1, I think you've got some decent options with a $5000 ceiling - toward the high end of that, if you really want something signed, you might be able to find something from Ladies and Gentlemen or Hand Colored Flowers (1974). U.N. Stamp would probaly fall in there as well, and maybe, like as suggested above some of the Flash prints
As far as ephemera, there's some really good stuff for well under your limit - the 60s Castelli-era mailers (Flowers 1964 and Green Stamps 1966) should be around $1500. Although they're not signed and were issued folded, both are close variations of prints that are in the catalogue raisonee - I feel like they're kind of more than ephemera, even though they're not an edition per se.
In a similar vein, but also an edition with an known number, that I think it might be possible with your budget, is the unsigned version of Lincoln Center ticket. This was an edition of 500 on paper (signed version was 250 on opaque acrylic) - also mentioned in the catalog.
There was a 1981 Marilyn announcement (12"x12") for a Castelli retrospective- it's not in the catalogue, but they're known and come up fairly often at the regional auction houses
I think you're right to avoid SBMs the - "real" ones from 1970 are still dodgy as hell (although one that he signed "This is not by me" might be kind of cool to have) and the later ones are fakes of fakes

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by troika49 on Nov 3, 2020 12:28:59 GMT 1, This is a wealth of information thank you.
Out of what you've proposed I quite like Hand Colored Flowers, Ladies & Gents and Flash (although you have to be picky on the panel).
I'll balance up ephemera vs. an actual edition.
SBM is murky waters as you're dealing with prints that are not entirely authorized by Warhol which have been reproduced in modern day and there may be fakes of the 1970s stuff. If I was to go SBM I would get the modern versions direct from source to hang for aesthetic reasons rather than collecting.
LJCal had a nice 1966 Soup Can bag as well and that might be another route.
All this has opened up my eyes to what is possible for $5K. We should do a similar topic on Lichtenstein.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Horatio Nelson on Nov 3, 2020 14:17:33 GMT 1, I remember being in Amsterdam about 4 years ago and a gallery there had a signed Warhol ed of 1,000 etching/B&w lithograph of Marilyn, for somewhere in the β¬750-1,500 mark. Iβve never seen one since, but remember the gallery owner telling me it was quite rare to see a signed print of that large edition by him, but it offered good value for a print collector. The signature looked authentic and in pencil but I never asked if it was a stamp etc. Iβd still like to get one if I ever find one.

I don't think that is authetic, no mention in Feldman and Schellman.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by troika49 on Nov 9, 2020 4:36:21 GMT 1, als33 - I've seen a few mailers available: Flowers (1964) - Folded sheet which is 22x22 inches expanded out S&H Green Stamps (1965) - 22x22 inches Mao Invitation Card (1972) - 7x7 inches Marilyn Monroe (1981) - 7x7 inches
Would you know: - Should I consider all of the above as lithographs similar to a poster/postcard and not reproduced the same way as the original works on paper? - Are there many fakes of the above out there? - Should I treat any signed versions of the above as suspect?
I've also tracked down a copy of F&S so I can get better acquainted with this space. It's fun to learn about history in Andy's time, look at the works and also collect potential pieces. It's the awesome part of our hobby. It's a little bit of history, literature, visual art, culture and commerce all in one.

It's the awesome part of our hobby. It's a little bit of history, literature, visual art, culture and commerce all in one. Keep in mind that this is just one guy's opinion, but I'd consider the 64 flower and 65 green stamps mailers as essentially prints - they were created at the same time using the same method and the same images as their editioned counterparts (green stamps and flowers were both signed editions of 300). The differences between these and the mailers are :
- the mailers are unsigned (obviously) - the mailers are from larger editions (unknown in the case of flowers, 6,000 in the case of green stamps) - The flowers mailer is printed to the edge - the signed edition has a small border around the edge where it's signed - They're printed on the reverse - They're folded (8 sections for the flowers, more for the stamps, but I'm not sure how many)
but otherwise they're largely the same. They'll never be near as valuable as the signed version, but I think that actually makes them pretty good bang for the buck (Lichtenstien did a similar run of prints/mailers with Castelli at the same time and you can get a Crying Girl mailer for somewhere around 10-20% of what the signed edition of 300 goes for, for the same image, printed at the same time, by the same people, for the same show).
I'm less familiar with later invitations and show cards, but I'd definitely put these more in the category of reproductions/ephemera. Sometimes around the time a portfolio was released, the publisher would produce miniature versions on card stock (sort of like postcards) as promotional items but I wouldn't consider these to be "prints" or "editions" at all and sales prices tend to be all over the place.
Unfortunately there's a ton of fake Warhol signatures out there, to the point where unless it's from a top tier auction house and/or has super rock-solid provenance, I assume that anything that wasn't originally from a signed edition that has a signature (posters, books, etc), the signature, at least, is fake
Glad you got a copy of F&S - if you're into Warhol, it's absolutely indispensible. I'd also recommend "The Complete Commissioned Posters" (https://www.amazon.com/Andy-Warhol-Complete-Commissioned-1964-1987/dp/3791349716/ref=sr_1_22?dchild=1&keywords=warhol+posters&qid=1604939524&sr=8-22). It covers a lot of stuff that doesn't rise to the level of an editioned print, but is still "official" Warhol, and an interesting avenue for collecting

One would presume people would rather fake the actual editions but who knows... Sorry - should have been clearer on that one. I meant that there are a lot of fake "autographs" out there (i.e., things that weren't originally part of a signed, numbered edition, but are sold as signed by Warhol, like posters and books, etc. - you often get a situation where the object might be real, but the signature's a fake). I don't have any knowledge or experience that would lead me to believe the Castelli mailers are faked any more frequently than anything else.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by troika49 on Nov 9, 2020 22:28:17 GMT 1, Thanks... I agree on the autographs of both Lichtenstein and Warhol. Too many going around and the fakes are nearly impossible to tell apart especially on a computer screen.
I suspect the temptation is too great to sign genuine ephemera and then bump up the price 10x.
