NOT BANKSY, by Maxie on May 27, 2009 10:15:12 GMT 1, Another eagerly anticipated print drop this week! ;D
Greetings from banksy.co.uk and welcome the first newsletter.
Typed words of nuggets of news follow. You can read them if you like. It's been a busy past month here at the ephemeral one project HQ, including a visit to Andipa's Banksy show.
Details can be found at the banksy flickr:
www.flickr.com/photos/banksy
There are one or two new pieces there too.
And if you're interested in reading in what the project eats for subversive breakfast in less than 140 characters, check the not_banksy Twitter here:
twitter.com/not_banksy
On to more pressing matters.
We are on the precipice of commencing commodification of banksy.co.uk's output, in the form of a charity release on eBay. By signing up to this mailing list, you are getting this news before anyone else. The release will go live later on this morning, and details of the edition will be found here: shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/not_banksy
It's an original edition of 10 priced at Β£50, so be quick. 100% of all proceeds will go to the Red Cross.
If you miss this edition, fear not.
By giving away a total of 211 artworks now (10 to the Red Cross, 1 to Andipa's window and 200 to that most discerning critic of all, the Great British public), the project is starting to run low on supplies of paint and food.
So news of another release or two will follow shortly. including a familiar face. Be excited.
This time the edition numbers will be higher, again all will be hand painted, and editions will always be priced as low as possible. There's a rather big stunt up one or two subversive sleeves too, details to follow. The second / third week of June could be ones to watch. All details will be on banksy.co.uk
As ever, you'll be the first to know.
Keep it surreal, banksy.co.uk

NOT BANKSY, by baileymontana on May 27, 2009 10:47:10 GMT 1, Still don't really get all this banksy stuff. In my mind it would be more interesting if they used original concepts and images to get across their point. I'd much prefer to buy original and unique artwork with 100% of the profits going to charity than this.
With all the financial problems going on in the world I just don't feel that Banksy and Nick Walker are the worst "bad guys" out there. For the most part I like their art. Last year Banksy did Cans, the Pet Store and the New Orleans hit, all of which were 100 times more artistically interesting than the banksy's I've seen so far.
As Red Cross is a great charity you could make a donation direct with no deductions for art materials so 100% of your donation goes direct to the Red Cross

I always thought Lenny Henry was on Comic Relief for that
I did comment about the art though. It is sort of funny but loses me when you ask people to buy it (whether for charity or not).
When a new artist says "it's all for charity" I sometimes feel they disguise the fact that they are maybe a bit nervous about asking people to spend money on the art for art's sake.
Wizbong if 100% of the payment is going to charity (ie no deductions for website costs, materials and time) then it is very admirable what they are doing but it doesn't change my opinion on wanting to own any of the art I've seen so far.
It does pass the time of day but is not that groundbreaking IMO.

NOT BANKSY, by mattlan on May 27, 2009 13:04:09 GMT 1, Regardless of wherever its for charity or not itβs still profiteering off the back of someone elseβs name, and when I say profiteering I donβt particularly mean financially. Still, each to the own, I'm sure some people will buy it.

NOT BANKSY, by Happy Shopper on May 27, 2009 13:23:07 GMT 1, It seems a bit odd to be slagging off Banksy (I assume that's the point of these), whilst having nothing else to say for yourself. Just seems a bit pointless.
The Nathan Barley DVD cover, made years ago, does a much better job of taking the piss.

lol! Care to explain how exactly you profiteer, but not in a financial way?
Pssst: think Warhol, soup / marilyn, and a certain artist talked about a lot on this board. That bastard profiteering swine! Grrr, I might write angry messages about it on the internet.

NOT BANKSY, by nacional on May 27, 2009 15:10:51 GMT 1, Don't think it is slagging off...think of it as an affectionate homage or even a pastiche...look at the language in the website: it is very ironic, not sarcastic...no malice..just gently poking fun and playing around...it is totally a fit with the great British sense of sending up national icons, but in a friendly way....would not even be surprised if they were not in communication with the man himself to avoid copyright and intellectual property infringements etc....if he don't mind why should we..

NOT BANKSY, by gwenie on May 27, 2009 16:50:55 GMT 1, IMO it's crap. A white canvas with a rat stuck on it . I like the concept of banksy and I love the Very Little Walker piece, but this is rubbish.
Fair enough - I really like the idea of a canvas with a rat stuck on it, and even better, all the profits going to charity. Much more appealing than a lot of prints / pieces around at the mo - IMVHO.

Excellent post and just how I see it. This is art satire, some of the stuff is fucking clever, Laz exclusive turned out to be pretty prophetic, Very Little Walker well enough said really, and we're being sold to on an unrelenting daily basis in this scene, so to see it get challenged is refreshing.
and at the end of the day they've given away a hell of a lot of art now, whether you like this release or not, overall there's very little to hate on here. In fact, unhappyshopper/bailey's posts puzzle me. An ed of 11 at Β£50 all to charity? What bastards!
(Like with a lot of art) I think it's a case of you either get this, or you don't. I'm not keen on a lot of stuff sold on here but each to their own, whatever tickles your pickle etc.
Who's up for discussing why that TOX print was rubbish?
