ebay lull?, by ptron on Feb 12, 2007 6:36:39 GMT 1, There is an applause, starting bid £449 with 14hrs to go and no bids.
250082861556
There is also a flags at £0.01 with 2 days left. 220081580010
It's funny but I'll bet all the would be bidders are waiting for "around February 20th"
I say it's funny because we can't all be winners on the 20th, but by our actions or more like lack of actions, I'd say we all believe we are.

ebay lull?, by tomhills1 on Feb 12, 2007 17:06:49 GMT 1, no lull, i sold my applause for £615 on saturday and had two offers @£585. things just not as mad as they were say a month ago. i agree there does seem to be a slowdown, in the volume of sales there is too. they could'nt have kept rising the way that they were either, it will be interesting to see how these items finish. i bought a framed grin reaper for £2250 a month ago and since then i've seen them go for between £2350 - £2800, so i think you could safely say prices have levelled out. for now.

Hopefully they will stop being greedy tw@ts and settle to sell them for 6 times what they spent rather than 10 times what they spent.... It would be nice, but doubt it will happen....

Both Applause's went for £555 and £551 on eBay tonight.
Applause lull due to that bit more expensive to get framed, or lets free up some money for the 20th? Well done on getting £615.
Grin Reaper different class (not just in monetary value).

ebay lull?, by absyrd on Feb 13, 2007 0:19:09 GMT 1, If you are wanting to make money off of anything, the real money is made over longer periods of time.
Look at it like this... you have a chance to lose a few thousand dollars (you can't go below 0) or a chance to make a ton (sky is the limit).
If you are stressed, just stop where you are now and watch. I know that isn't easy to do if you have an addictive personality like myself (smokes 2 cigarettes while typing this).
Now that these artists have really just broken pretty well into the media, one more big "stunt" or whatever could open up the flood gates. That or someone dying... that usually helps, too.

ebay lull?, by runyaga on Feb 13, 2007 15:12:20 GMT 1, This isnt an original thought but I'm new to the fourms... How about..
Banksy re-issuing all his prints through POW, "limited" and "signed". This way the market on his prints would collapse. Gallery's would be *pissed*. People who are looking to make a ton of money would lose that option; there would be a flood of legitimate prints on the market.
Would be a great f@#k you to the market. Who would benefit? Only his fans by getting a second chance to original prints.
I cant remember where I read this (Serpentine/Murderme book?) but Damien Hirst said "I would love for everyone to have a Hirst". I call bullshit. If everyone had a Hirst there would be no market and prices would (possibly) deflate. And I doubt he has the balls to attempt a re-issuing of his prints. No one wants to bite the hand that feeds it (including Banksy? ;-).
Back to dreaming of having a authentic Happy Chopper on my wall.

ebay lull?, by slowmo on Feb 13, 2007 15:26:42 GMT 1, Stop and think. Banksy is enabling people of low income to get a large slice of cash from those who have.
We cant look at this as such a black and white issue of carpet bagger vs true collector. If you re-issue, yeah lots more people get a print. But I like the romantic (and it is romantic) idea that just such a rat of society that Banksy portrays should be able to pay his rent or buy a car to get his family around in because he was lucky enough to log on to POW at the right time.
Robs from the rich, gives to the poor (indirectly), Banksy Hood, Banksy hood, banksy hood.
Note: I openly accept that the 95% of all sell on banksy profits go straight to people who have enough cash to not get a couple of months break from the breadline. I just hope my romantic view happens sometimes.

Yeah that tickles me ;D, but look on any council estate (if you're UK, not sure you are), they all have sky dishes so can get decent speed internet free.

I mean right now you can buy an unsigned faile for £25!!

I would imagine LAZ and other gallery owners would freak. I still think its a great idea from a historical point of view. Art History would be talking about Banksy for years to come; how an artist destroyed his own market. What would be even better if the market could endure such a shock and prices continued to rise. Would be hilarious.
Back to work and thinking about Happy Choppers...

There's always going to be people that want the best most exclusive item. It would just enable people like me without a spare few thousand pounds to buy prints I like without taking away from the primary market. I think it's a genius idea.

This is an interesting point, I have a graphic reproduction business and could do high quality scans of the original prints and using a litho printer could easily reproduce thousands of replica litho prints and sell them for £5-£10 each and make a fortune.
BUT surely it would all run into big trouble, the main issue would be copyright, my arse would be sued. But what if Banksy/Laz decided it was a good idea, it wouldn't lower the prices of the limited edition art screen prints and lots of people out there would be quite happy with a Banksy poster blutacked to their wall, it would be a completely different mass market. My bet is a giant like athena has probably approached this already and got knocked back.
It wouldn't bother me if this happened, it could even give more exposure and interest in his work therefore making the original screen prints more valuable.
What are your opinions on this?

ebay lull?, by johnas on Feb 14, 2007 12:03:16 GMT 1, completely agree... just look at all the kandinsky's and dali posters that adorn walls all over the world... it hasn't harmed the 'originals' market. if anything, it's brought the artists to an even wider audience as the images become instantly recognisable
surely with the ever increasing popularity of banksy, it won't be long before posters of the popular images will be available as a cost effective solution to owning a banksy original or print

His "message" might get lost right now.
Instead, if they were to mass produce prints 10 years down the road when we are HOPEFULLY looking back at this time in the world and trying to figure out how not to do some of these things again (yes, us Americans), it might be more well-received.
