why is value is going down?, by aginghippie on May 8, 2010 22:04:50 GMT 1, Sorry, thought the thread was talking about the "value" not "price", a common mistake I guess. Value doesn't really matter to me if I cannot afford it. This downturn coupled with Madoff is flushing out a lot of fantastic work that are brilliant value, but I cannot afford the price.

why is value is going down?, by simontay on May 8, 2010 23:02:06 GMT 1, I find myself in a predicament. I have lots on the wall I love, plenty more waiting to be framed. I can't afford to get it framed, I want to buy loads more but can't afford it.
This leaves me with the two major issues, cash flow and wall space. The art has never been in question (in terms of value) but those two points must surely be restricting the 'buyers' in this market, at whatever level you care to choose?
I am really missing the days of prints on paper that measured 70x50 and would pop nicely into a habitat frame, bought and walled the same day.

I think you will find purists wouldn't buy prints in the first place, or anything by a graffer that uses stencils

why is value is going down?, by snausages on May 10, 2010 22:04:51 GMT 1, I've heard that something like 99% of art will eventually be โ practically speaking โ worthless - or valued at a nominal price. This is probably true and especially so for things like printsโdespite the recent fad where prints became a popular commodity. I really think this is what people should expect here. In 50 yrs is anyone going to give a damn about a nick walker, choe, parla or faile print? Not to mention the even lesser knowns. Maybe, but chances are slim if you want to be honest with yourself.
The only time art appears to be a good investment is when people 'invest' in stuff like the greats, picasso, giacometti, rauschenberg etc. and serious 'blue chip' living artists as they call em, such as Peter Doig, Richard Prince.
But that said, I've plunked down some semi serious money on art that is semi speculative. Hope for the best and enjoy it anyway.
