Show everyone your latest Art Purchase?, by kashi on Jan 31, 2021 9:38:51 GMT 1, Not quite my latest, and totally not street, but it is where I am now!
I just noticed the date of the postmark on this envelope this morning. If I'd noticed last night, it would have been exactly 101 years old. The sketch on the envelope is by not-so-famous-now-but-very-well-thought-of-at-that-time British artist Frank Brangwyn. It later became the 5 colour woodcut that you can see in the last picture. It is possible that the 'no.2' refers to the second colour block to be used, and is an idea of where that colour should be, although it doesn't really match with the finished print so I'm not sure.
I have a few tiny sketches by Frank Brangwyn. He used absolutely anything for drawing on it seems. I know that later, during World War 2 and after, paper was scarce in Britain, but I think he was also just compulsive, drawing on whatever came to hand. The address is 'The Jointure, Ditchling' which is where he lived in Sussex. FB was lazy when printing, so prints are often reversed (as this one is), even when lettering is involved ..shop signs read backwards etc!
Hope one or 2 of you might like to see this. Probably you, coach!

I have a couple of William Russell Flint sketches that are in a similar sort of vein. Definitely not street, but I like them, and I like yours too!

I have a couple of William Russell Flint sketches that are in a similar sort of vein. Definitely not street, but I like them, and I like yours too! I never really meant to like Frank Brangwyn. My mum's uncle had 3 Brangwyn etchings on his wall and my mum loved them when she was small. When she & my Dad married, her uncle sent them some money. They asked if they could spend some of it on a Brangwyn watercolour they liked and he said spend on what you want. It was always on the living room wall as I grew up, but I never really took to it. A few years ago I thought it would be nice to find her something of his for Christmas, and saw a nice little etching on E bay (edited to fuck up the link). I bought it and framed it for her. Before Christmas came I kind of fell in love with it. I still gave it to her, but have been looking at his work ever since .. maybe 5 years now? I love drawing & artist-printing, and FB did plenty of both. Tons in fact. Premilinary sketches (like this one) are particularly interesting to me, and are usually only ยฃ20-50, as no one else seems interested in these raggedy bits and pieces .. which I'm glad about as I like them for themselves rather than anything else. Be careful at auction .. his prints are so 'real' that they are often sold as drawings etc.

I'm going to need to create a 'close hung' wall like this soon - too many small pieces! I was going to mix up frame styles but yours makes me think all matching is good too What's the Heavy Weaponry elephant rainbow piece please? These are just the Bristol Museum postcards.

This one's called "Billy" - oil on canvas.
