Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by scavos on Sept 2, 2007 16:52:32 GMT 1, what are your thoughts on what it will go for???
Hey Banksman. This is a tough one because it's seems it's not the best time to be selling at the moment since the recent Found & Neate shows and up coming Micallef of course. Folks seem to be either skint or saving. Me? - always skint! Mantis is massively underrated in my opinion - which is great for buyers of course as it's a great time to buy his work while it's still relatively cheap. I really can't believe what some of his work has recently gone for on flea bay. His work is getting better all the time and having just got together with Frankie as well as the imminent release at Studiocrombie things bode well for him (and us). I do know that quality is really important to Mantis which was why he wanted to work with Frankie after seeing the way he produced the goods for Found; the coa's, wax seals, sprayed tubes, paper etc. Evolution has to be my favourite print that I own and I love AFD for the translation from that Brick Lane wall to paper. INeed is a striking and arguably a very necessary image that I find really disturbing; a little too haunting for my sensitive pallet in terms of the wall at home! Definitely one for the workshop/studio wall though if I had one though. Saying that, many people will want this for their wall as well as the rarity factor, being a PP with special colourways. Irony aside, price is anyone's guess at the moment and I'll be watching this with interest. Good for you for avoiding the bay for as long as you did. Shame, but sometimes, needs must. Good luck.

Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by artfalldown on Aug 2, 2007 16:07:05 GMT 1, Apart from Beejoir 'LV Child' decent idea and Mantis 'All Falls Down' great street piece, they are both really average artists who seem to have been made 'popular' by people desperate to discover the next Banksy!
Thoughts.....

I didn't think 'All Fall Down' was a great street piece. Pretty good, but not head-of-the-class.

I would agree on the all fall down not being that much of a heavy hitter, as for Beejoir however, I'd disagree I think he has came out swinging for the fences. Each one of his prints have been tip top IMO and if continues on this same path (which I am sure he will) he'll be something great for years to come.

Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by corblimeylimey on Aug 2, 2007 17:37:45 GMT 1, I disagree, Beejoirs style is nothing like Banksy although I think Mantis has a similar style (then again so has Hutch & loads of others)
What's the point of your post? do you really think these artists are popular for any other reason that a lot of people like them? there's only one Banksy, he stands out from anyone else quite clearly, doesn't mean all other artists should give up and go home and it doesn't mean other artists aren't allowed to use stencils, I'll add Dolk as another top artist to go with Mantis & Beejoir.
I really like both the Mantis prints, they're right up my street, I also like Beejoirs work too although I've only got Turin Scam the other two (LV Child & SBFO) won't sit right at home with me but great pieces of art nonetheless.

Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by mose on Aug 3, 2007 0:35:51 GMT 1, imo, Beejoir really hasn't 'proven' anything. Potential? yes.
how many sold-out gallery shows has he had? how many prints has he sold? What's his record at auction?
hell, Dan Baldwin, who many like to rag on here, is far more established at this point. many want the 'next' so badly that they jump the gun something fierce. So far, Beejoir is the current flavor of the darkside Banksy board and not much more.
Lets turn this thread around can you please tell the masses what art/artist they should be buying
1. the ones you like 2. do your own homework 3. if you are looking for investment, you buy when others are not looking or when there is blood in the street.

Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by Photoxtc on Aug 3, 2007 2:33:07 GMT 1, I think he has proved that he knows how to make a strong statement with some pretty amazing imagery.... I also think he reaches out a little further that "the Dark Side"... I knew about Beejoir long before I even knew this board existed....
Am I comparing him to Picasso, No... but I do think he has some great potential and has proved himself to be a strong contender in years to come, of course we are all just speculating here but so far he has made a hell of an impression and much stronger statements than some of these other artists we're talking about here.... of course this is just my opinion and does it all really matter that much anyway?

he's a street artist what has any of the above have to do with whether you like his art or not?
So far, Beejoir is the current flavor of the darkside Banksy board and not much more.
you obviously did not hear the stats from souled out, 9000 different ip address chasing 40 prints currently there are 4000 members on this board so i think his appeal extends this board even if it didn't what bearing would that have on what you think of the art he has produced thus far?

obviously, lol.
1. to me proven = established. Many on this board are ridiculous with how low they set the bar for an artist to be considered established. Reality, almost all of the artists discussed here could vanish in the next two years and people will be left with a lot of tubes full of worthless, or 1/2 off, posters under their beds or in their closets.
2. I did not hear the little factoid you would like to hold over my head, nor does it matter. 9000 different IP's going after cheap, easy money is not saying much. How many of those IP's would buy the print if it was priced at 'market value' in this overheated street art scene? How many of those 9000 different IP's will translate into the purchase of 15,000 GBP originals? or will be part of the groundswell that will result in Beejoir getting major gallery shows, his pieces getting picked up by major auction houses, mainstream media coverage, etc.. If they do, then you will be talking the language of 'proven' and 'established' artist.
3. I said flavor of the month on this board and "not much more". I didn't say nothing more, so your numbers game does not invalidate what I stated.
The funny thing about all this is that I agree that Beejoir has shown glimmers of potential and may, in time, establish and 'prove' himself as an artist. Many here are too far, too soon, and may get smacked for it when the cycle shifts. but that is just my opinion, and others' may vary considerably.

Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by rob123rob on Aug 3, 2007 3:38:39 GMT 1, Not every artist finds their niche right away, so it would be easy to call an artist "average", when in fact he or she is actually finding their style/vision. Look at Banksy's Rude Copper. Not exactly fascinating, but definitely a good beginning. Give it two years and I bet you, artfalldown, will have either a Mantis or a Beejoir under your bed in a protective sleeve. And as for finding the next Banksy, there is no need, as there is still a Banksy to collect.

I think your missing the point here about artists like Beejoir. As the term suggest a street artist cares not for gallery shows and auction houses. The whole idea is to go out and get your message out to the masses, which I believe has been done quite effectively. Personally I agree with the message but aesthetically his work is far too abrasive for a place in my home. I do agree he is the current flavour of the month, partly because of his work and also due to the lack of Banksy action to talk about. Not so sure about your comments on Baldwin, he is a one trick pony with the combined artistic ability of a primary school student and a scrap booking retiree.

Mantis Print π¬π§ Street Artist, Artwork For Sale, by ctc2 on Aug 3, 2007 3:54:56 GMT 1, I would very much like to own the recent work by both artists. I think that the work is very good. It is a whole other issue as to whether or not for example the Beejoir work is worth the prices that are being charged on Ebay. I would submit not...but things are only worth what people are willing to pay for them. As is said on this board many times...if you like it buy it. Who cares what others think. If the bottom falls out on these two you can bet that I would pick up what I could because I like them.

so what is he doing hooking on with Frankie/CampBarbara and selling expensive works at a gallery show? Getting your message out to the masses via limited edition prints with print runs of 35, 40, 75, etc. ? come on now.
I don't begrudge street artists getting paid and don't like the whole 'anti-capitalism' vibe many have with street art. Do your thing and if you can earn a living doing what you love, well then, God(or just life in general) has blessed you.
but don't give 'street artists' any more cred., don't make 'em martyrs, when they are largely doing the same art thang everyone else is. Much of the work is still amazing even without the myth.

The whole idea is to go out and get your message out to the masses, which I believe has been done quite effectively.. so what is he doing hooking on with Frankie/CampBarbara and selling expensive works at a gallery show? Getting your message out to the masses via limited edition prints with print runs of 35, 40, 75, etc. ? come on now. I don't begrudge street artists getting paid and don't like the whole 'anti-capitalism' vibe many have with street art. Do your thing and if you can earn a living doing what you love, well then, God(or just life in general) has blessed you. but don't give 'street artists' any more cred., don't make 'em martyrs, when they are largely doing the same art thang everyone else is. Much of the work is still amazing even without the myth.
