What's the deal with TESCO??, by Yervi on Jan 17, 2011 22:46:48 GMT 1, Hey guys I was just noticing that TESCO is an often recurring theme in most artists work from the UK. Just wondering if there is a reasoning behind this and if you could explain it to a Yank from Cali.
Cheers, Yervi

What's the deal with TESCO??, by manty on Jan 17, 2011 22:57:53 GMT 1, Asda is owned by wallmart
The nearest easy speak is that Tesco is the uk version of wallmart in USA, culling all the independent retailers, taking over pretty much every retail sector.
Big out of town mega stores, killing the fabric of society.
and much much more

What's the deal with TESCO??, by pcant on Jan 17, 2011 23:14:00 GMT 1, And Tesco is expanding in the U.S under the "Fresh & Easy" brand, which sounds a bit like ladies hygiene but is actually a supermarket chain. Taking it to Walmart on their home turf.

Bugger off are they, I've seen it used by other graff artists over the years, Mau Mau had a great piece or 3 about them a few years back, and Beejoir did that Oil Painting of the Tescos trucks driving into Noah's ark, as well as a good few other I've seen on www.stencilrevolution.com

What's the deal with TESCO??, by Poppy Sunshine on Jan 18, 2011 9:21:36 GMT 1, I don't think they are specifically having a go at Tesco.
I think the Tesco bags are a reference to the big supermarkets in general it's just that Tesco have the more appealing design on their bag and it works better for a piece of art.
Simples !!

well that's simply not true. apart from that though:
power, influence, connotation and ubiquity.

I disagree with the above, and think the artists are referencing Tescos in particular for many reasons, some of which are stated in this thread

and some aren't, including 'land banks' although Tesco are not on there own in this respect. many of the large supermarket chains buy up large areas of land intended for commercial or retail use, often in towns where they are well established and just sit on it without developing the site simply to monopolise the area and stifle competition.

The DM should have a picture of Father Ted with his 'Down With This Sort Of Thing' placard next to every news (ed: 'News' - Ha!) article they run.
