ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by lv90210 on Nov 9, 2020 13:36:26 GMT 1, Does anyone have any experience of buying from non UK Auction houses like Bukowskis or Heritage for example. What are the taxes, carriage and insurance liabilities? Is it worth the extra hassle and does anyone have good / bad insight or experiences Feels like a faff. As in a Swedish one ?

What are the taxes, carriage and insurance liabilities? Is it worth the extra hassle and does anyone have good / bad insight or experiences Feels like a faff. As in a Swedish one ? I get emailed constantly from Heritage (for example as i signed up once!) who are US based and have seen pieces from Bukowskis Auctions who are in Stockholm. So i was wondering if anyone here has purchased from an Auction house outside the UK? I imagine the taxes /duty, insurances and carriage costs mount up.

Guess this will be depending if you can seal the deal and have it delivered before the new year. As long as it's within EU. Brexit you know.
Edit: I suspect a lot will change with auction prices after Brexit, but that deserves its own thread.

Have bought from US auctions more than once (incl. Heritage, Swann, Christieβs NYC)
I always agree beforehand on the cost of shipping (incl crating, insurance etc...) for pieces i am interested in bidding on.
I also send them about 500 emails insisting on how to label the paperwork so it goes through customs more easily
Never had any issues and got some good deals (before sterling took a dump of course)

Being clear on the medium, whether original / edition, artist signature or not...
And the appropriate tax code of course

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by kfroms on Nov 9, 2020 14:44:10 GMT 1, I bought from - and sold with - Bukowskis while living in Stockholm.
Can't comment on shipping / taxes and insurance but the overall experience was very good. They are the market leader in Scandinavia since ages, a bit old school ( in a nice way ) and very reliable.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by brownbuffalo13 on Dec 13, 2020 17:37:01 GMT 1, you should absolutely negotiate, i've been selling thru an auction house and they only take 2 to 4 % depending on value, but when i first started working with them they took 6%.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by Poster Bob on Jan 7, 2021 13:57:06 GMT 1, I'm sure you can find a different courier who will say otherwise. Last night I asked someone to arrange a collection for me and the auction house is getting a quote from their shipping partner.
It's not just a problem for sellers. It's also a problem for buyers too. With non-essential travel currently banned, you can't pick up any items you may have won at auction. I asked a courier company and they also said they can't pick up items from auction houses on my behalf as this goes against current covid restrictions. So basically I wont be bidding on any items anytime soon.

Valid reasons to leave home... To fulfil a legal obligation. So if you have a contract to submit an item to auction, then surely this is a legal obligation?

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by thor on Jan 7, 2021 22:30:48 GMT 1, No worries folks I just consigned a Banksy Grin reaper to forum auctions 27th January auction via DHL with absolutely no problem and next day delivery , and I'm based in northern Ireland , so go ahead and ship your art with confidence because parcels etc are getting through no problem..so bid on your items without fear because the works can and will be shipped out to you upon purchase.
