Moniker Art Fair, by AoT Framing on Oct 7, 2016 20:58:32 GMT 1, The virtual reality booth, if you can be bothered to queue is really good! Eine/Charming print at Jealous is a winner. Everything else was so dull and un-inspiring. On the upside it gave me renewed confidence in my gallery as I think my stable of Artists are so much better than anything I saw, but I guess I'm biased Looking at The Other Art fair website, it looks like a lot of the artists from Moniker are showing with The Other Art fair which seems a bit strange??

Moniker Art Fair, by thomasmer on Oct 8, 2016 3:16:59 GMT 1, If you cant curate don't is the answer.
Its fairly expensive for a pitch so it puts off a lot of galleries and artists, personally think they should open it up to more solo artists and random galleries on the cheap if they are willing to get stuck into the installations and making it a unique art fair rather than run of the mill white booth blandness.
Looks like Frankie got out just in time.

It went down hill when they left Village Underground. The early Monikers were brilliant and full of quirky stuff. Sadly teaming up with the Other Art Fair just made it dull and like any other art fair.

Moniker Art Fair, by Dibbs 45 on Oct 8, 2016 9:41:48 GMT 1, I went down on the Pv which is an opportunity to catch up with people more than see the art. I'm popping along this morning to get a better look. With these fairs something has to grab you from the art and equally it needs some kind of identity of what it wants to be. Urban etc.

Moniker Art Fair, by jusdeep on Oct 8, 2016 10:29:30 GMT 1, I went along to the private view and also popped in briefly yesterday to see I had missed anything and to check out the Crossroads show next door and Punk on Paper in Dray's Walk.
I get what people are saying with it losing it's edge or 'Urban nature' since Village Underground but I think this years is the strongest it's been in a long while and with shows like this you can't stick to a single generic format and expect it to keep on working. A lot of these shows unfortunately boil down to money and keeping sponsors and stallholders happy so change is inevitable.
I think Tina has done a great job to bring it back on form and bring some current technology and interactivity to the show. I'm not the biggest fan of VR or app based interactivity, but it has relevance.
I thought the quality of work in Moniker was stronger and more varied. My only negative would be that lack of interesting and innovative spaces created, (like the SOS tent, Polly Morgan's taxidermy studio etc) and that TOAF was very weak this year, even with Saatchi Art present again.
Unfortunately this is where a lot of the sponsorship money is at and it brings in crowds from Frieze and a different type of buyer. Personally I would love to see it more Urban, but unfortunately this would probably mean minimal funding, downsizing, moving to a smaller location and a fraction of the people would visit.

Absolutely right. Moniker is a great place to catch up with everyone but it's quite bland and seems smaller every year. I think the problems relating to identity are valid but we have to really ask if 'urban art' is simply relevant any more? The 'scene' isn't alive. Things move on and now people just want to see good art as opposed to the next cliched so called urban artist.

I noticed that there wasn't any discussion of Freize on the forum. It's not urban art per se, but thought there would be a mention. Or am I being an idiot and UAA represent the counterestablishment/independent art movement and Freize, the establishment?
