Originally conceived for display at the Station Museum in Houston, Texas during 2006, the original โGrade School Guernicaโ, 27 feet wide and 12 feet high, is one foot wider and a further foot taller than even the giant Picasso painting that inspired it. While Ron is known for over-sized pieces itโs the largest work heโs ever made.
In comparison the print is a more manageable 100cm by 49cm (39.4 inches by 19.3 inches). Overseen by Ron English himself at our Execution Dock studio, we are enormously proud to edition this substantial and inspiring work. Grade School Guernica is the first in a series of Ron English prints and hand-painted multiples to be released by The Outsiders this year.
The history behind Grade School Guernica: during the 1930s Spain became a battleground between the warring international forces of fascism and communism, and in April 1937 the Basque town of Guernica was mercilessly bombed by Germanyโs infamous Condor Legion. Picasso painted his Guernica to draw awareness to Spainโs plight, and a tapestry of it still hangs in the United Nations building, New York as a constant reminder. Ron Englishโs interpretation replaces Picassoโs figures with kids and toys, bringing to mind not only the infantilism of violence but also the often barbarous experience of childhood.
Ron English himself is credited with many of street artโs pivotal innovations and his photo-realistic style with some of its most memorable images. His amazing exhibition 'Skin Deepโฆ' is currently drawing the crowds at Lazarides Rathbone Gallery in London until July 23rd 2011.

i'm with you sal. i got excited when i read "Grade School Guernica is the first in a series of Ron English prints and hand-painted multiples to be released by The Outsiders this year." I only wish I knew what else was coming. If the next one is the star skull I'm going to be trying for it!

Not really. A screen print wouldn't do so much subtle shading.
