TOX π¬π§ Graffiti, Street Art, Artwork For Sale, by Heavyconsumer on Mar 3, 2009 20:04:16 GMT 1, Hate mail to SOS!!! Jesus, some people! ....... at least I now know where all the hate mails coming from. Kate's got some classics ranging from ''SOS ARE HOMOPHOBES'' ?? to '' You let me down by supporting criminals''!??!!
Coming out of "thread posting retirement obscurity" just to make one thing clear....... No hate mail sent from me. I do hate this print though.
Cashman......... What are you on about? "Graff' in it's purest form"? It's a Β£75 screen print. This is profiteering from a sig', a reputation, a mark which requires no talent, skill or thought to make. I know there are fans of tagging on here, but if that's all there were to this scene I would never have become interested. Look at work by guys like Replete, Peeta and many other talented writers then yes, I can accept it as art, as these guys can make a simple word interesting and attractive and sometimes even mesmerizing, but a school kid writing his name on stuff is a bit dull imo. Yes, I did it too when I was 11/12 and taking the tube/bus to school, I just don't see how it warrants discussing in adulthood or how anyone can respect an adult who makes a name for himself by this inane and foolish practice (IMO).
For the person who said it's not something which should be judged by it's artistic merit, how the hell else is a punter supposed to judge a Β£75 poster? Don't be soft! SOS is an art gallery - the clue is in there. There's no question this is an attempt at a joke and anyone who buys is clearly the butt of that! While the humour may be VERY reminiscent of "Morons," the work itself is somehow not quite as entertaining - oh yes wait, that's it, it isn't a piece of work, it's a fucking printed tag! It isn't me suggesting this should be looked at as art, it's the publisher of the piece, they're a gallery. We're certainly entitled to discuss this in the same way we would any other release, as we're being asked to pay Β£75 for it.
OK, I'm sorry, back to obscurity, I will not post again here. Suffice to say, all hate-mailers are sad bastards!

so true
i started off liking graffiti before street art. i dont understand how some people say they hate graffiti but like street art.
i think this is one of the most intresting/different releases inc the background story.
tox is the only tag i would buy as a print just for what he represents and what ive grown up with.
it means something to some and nothing to rest.

That is very very well put!! That is exactly what I thought too!!

Just a sterotypical view of some of the board memebers. Like the streotypical view being aired about taggers.

"street art" always struck me as a euphemism to validate stuff being sold (same goes for urban), "graffiti" is far too vandalistic and mean and unfriendly a term for it to be marketable to the suburbs.

TOX π¬π§ Graffiti, Street Art, Artwork For Sale, by idude on Mar 3, 2009 20:55:01 GMT 1, Excellent thread. By far the most interesting for quite some time. Made me buy one of the prints, so thanks for that. I'm just glad there's enough room in my brain, my heart and on my wall for this along a Banksy, an Eine, a Sickboy or a Herakut. Or even a Parla. And yes, I'm also glad to be the butt of this joke. I just don't get all that hate...

Interesting it has stoked up people enough to send hate mail, some strong thoughts on this essentially harmless print.

This movement was built on all that nasty tagging, all the NY pioneers of the 1970/80s did was tag their names at first, but they planted a seed without which we wouldn't have the likes of Banksy today. I don't deny the historical importance of tagging, but you can't really say that all street art came from New York, there was even graffiti found on the walls of Pompeii. I appreciate that books such as Chalfant's subway art helped to proliferate the work, opening it up to a wider audience, but I don't think that if the NY scene had never happened, there wouldn't be a street art scene to speak of today.
In regards to the tagging, it's suggested that it was borne from the residents of the underprivelidged areas of NY wanting to mark something as their own, posessing a part of their public realm, and they realised that scrawling your name onto a train would allow it to be seen all around the city, even in the more affluent areas, thus emphasising their presence. The same thinking, where tagging is seen as a symptom of a run-down and ill-administered area, still rings true today, where, as a result, crime is more likely to occur, or at least be percieved to occur. Thus, although tagging may not cause crime, it creates a fear of crime. Due to this persistent reaction, it will always be villified by government, resulting, via their misunderstanding and failed appreciation of the spectrum and indeed positive effect of street art, in all work in all its forms to be targetted. If it wasn't for tagging like this, street art would have a much better name, wouldn't be buffed quite so often, and not so many street artists would be seen as criminals.

TOX π¬π§ Graffiti, Street Art, Artwork For Sale, by Heavyconsumer on Mar 3, 2009 22:34:29 GMT 1, no one person. Just the general type of person. Frankie has a gallery so i wouldnt call him a wanna be art dealer. Yupie maybe! ;D Frankie is cool. This was not intended to be a dig at someone. Just a sterotypical view of some of the board memebers. Like the streotypical view being aired about taggers.
What stereotypical views have you read regarding taggers? Aren't they a group of people that write their name/initials/alias on stuff? That's all I was ever doing when I tagged, not making some type of statement. I think you're not quite getting the irony of this Liam, if you'll excuse me for saying so. You're banging on about "yuppie art dealer wannabes" while surely it's exactly that group who'd be most likely to consider dropping Β£75 for a screen printed tag isn't it? We all discuss (and I for one have learned about) a huge range of art in this forum. So why should this piece be taken out of context of all the other ART and considered somehow exempt of all the usual ways in which we discuss it? I'm not trying to upset anyone, I just can't imagine why someone would actually spend Β£75 on this. If you like seeing tagging in it's rawest form, good for you, but how can you relate that to a Β£75 print? It just seems enormously contradictary imo. And I'm a long way from being a fucking yuppie or an art-dealer wannabe FYI! ;D
no one person. And I'm a long way from being a fucking yuppie or an art-dealer wannabe FYI! ;D
