Beyond Punk - Shep Fairey, Jamie Reid, Gee Vaucher, by Signal Gallery on Aug 7, 2010 14:57:22 GMT 1, To end our summer run of shows Signal are showing artwork by a very wide range of Punk musicians and some of their artist fans. The show is curated by Gaye Advert (from the Adverts - see below) and opens on the 13th August.
The musicians involved include Adam Ant, Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Steve Ignorant (Crass), Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Youth (Killing Joke), Phil Barker (The Buzzcocks), Penny Rimbaud (Crass) and Gaye herself.
The artists include Jamie Reid, Gee Vaucher (Crass), Shepard Fairey (a huge punk fan - some rare pieces by him), Guy Denning (couldn't keep him out!!) and Dale Grimshaw (was a true punk in younger days - spikes and all.
The list for the Private View is closed now, but the show runs from 13th August - 21st August. Several of the musicians will be sitting in during the run of the show.

Trying to get the preview ready. As well as the varied artwork by the legendary musicians we have three rare HPM's by Shepard Fairey, and four special Punk pieces by the anarchic Guy Denning.

Quite a few of the musician/artists will be present including Gaye herself, Charlie, Poly Styrene, Adam Ant, Viv Albertine (The Slits) etc.
Sadly the list has been firmly closed as we have been swamped with PV requests.

Beyond Punk - Shep Fairey, Jamie Reid, Gee Vaucher, by jusdeep on Aug 13, 2010 9:10:34 GMT 1, I have a few pictures but didn't hang around too long as I had to shoot off early. I'm sure Gwenie or another will post some once the hangovers have subsided. I'll post some pictures over the weekend if nobody else does in the meantime. On the art side of things, I found the exhibition very interesting and will pop back when it's less busy to take a proper look. Most of the art apart from the artists you mentioned Smellmyfinger was from members of the punk bands, so was very early art school efforts and more history of the era than anything else. I myself found the show refreshing and intriguing. Well done Signal, I know a lot of work went into organising the event.

Thanks for this Jusdeep. It was a bit like herding cats, but was all worth it on the night. The queue to get in went right down Curtain Road and people were desperate to get in and trying any tactics to evade security. Loads of the musicians were there including Adam Ant and Poly Styrene.
It was the best party we've had in the gallery.
Gwenie did indeed take some great shots and has promised to put some up very soon.

Sorry, we haven't had a chance to prepare the page for our website. I'm working on it and will get it ready soon.

Beyond Punk - Shep Fairey, Jamie Reid, Gee Vaucher, by nacional on Aug 19, 2010 14:37:27 GMT 1, No offence Signal, but I did find this a bit disapointing, nice from Polystyrene but really, really, expensive at 2K??
Charlie Harper was a barber before singing in UK Subs wasn't he??? Nerd fact number 2...I read some where that UK Subs (There's a burning sun and it sets in the western world/ But it rises in the East and preddy soon it's gonna burn your temples down...Warhead, Warhead....) have the gold medal for the highest number of people playing in the group, incredibly, even beating The Fall.
I guess anyone under the age of 40 need not bother reading the above as they probably will not know what the hell I'm on about!!!

Beyond Punk - Shep Fairey, Jamie Reid, Gee Vaucher, by nacional on Aug 19, 2010 17:12:24 GMT 1, Judging by your avatar you have had a really really really tough just under 40 years Spenie, hats off to you.... On the subject of age, and sorry to harp on here (did you see what I did there...), but wasn't the lead singer of The Subs, like, really old, even in 78/79. I remember seeing them in, I think, Poole or maybe Southampton, and he looked at least 40 then. He must have picked up his buspass almost a decade ago.....

Beyond Punk - Shep Fairey, Jamie Reid, Gee Vaucher, by Signal Gallery on Aug 20, 2010 10:29:08 GMT 1, what are the dimensions of the dennings?
Here are the dimensions for the Denning pieces All in her head - 50 x 23 cm Trying to remember - 35 x 46 cm The dreams of children 1 (the girl with the pin earring)' - 25 x 48 cm The dreams of children 2 (another idea chokes and dies)' - 24 x 44 cm
Sorry you're a bit disappointed Nacional. This has been our most popular show. A unique collection of artwork by the widest range of Punk musicians - from the hardcore Anarcho politics of Penny Rimbauds (Crass) piece, to the very glamorous world of Adam Ant. The show's not so much about sales, but about a celebration. Got it
The show ends tomorrow. We'll be celebrating with the rest of the gin with some of the artists, so feel free to pop along.

Um, "pay no more than, 2k?'

I think you'll find that some of the works are very reasonably priced and many are of very high quality. No doubt about it, Poly is a legend and the decision to ask 2K was hers, not ours. Same for Penny. Several of the works are Not For Sale.
Anyway, come and have some gin tomorrow and we can battle it out with the artists.

Past tense, I think. Most Punks are now middle aged and with mortgages.
