Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by Agent Provocateur on Aug 24, 2010 16:52:50 GMT 1, Looks like a Banksy to me, have seen some stencils duplicate his style but never his eye for placement, composition, message and humour... and if it was Eine's birthday at the weekend it would make a good excuse for him being down there.
Anything special planned for the big day Fragile?

Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by My Name is Frank on Aug 24, 2010 18:41:41 GMT 1, For what it's worth, I think it's someone who's almost nailed Mr B's style. I've always admired Banksys use of shading, underspray and freehand work with his stencils (especially in his more recent bits), but this looks a bit heavy and a bit clumsy. Maybe if he was out 'celebrating' with Eine this could be put down to drinking and spraying but I'm still not convinced. Plus, the Tesco reference just doesn't seem quite right. Lef

Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by Coach on Aug 24, 2010 18:54:55 GMT 1, What would you say the message of the piece is?
My guess would be that these days kids natural thought about what a landmark looks like is a tescos store. In the old days landmarks were castles and the like. Its like that film where you show a kid pics of things like Ronald MacDonald, they all know who it is. Power of corporate advertising........ I still think its a Banksy. Trademark Banksy! (irony!) Cheers c

Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by Cornish Crayon on Aug 24, 2010 20:23:12 GMT 1, Not sure on the tesco's theme again, would he hang onto that theme, I'm not so sure
and if there is a message relating to tesco's then surely the flag should be more sort of world related as tesco's are now going worldwide, so complete domination, not just the UK
Is it Banksy ? Dunno

Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by bullet on Aug 25, 2010 10:44:16 GMT 1, whether its a banksy or not.. the subject is awful.
its just saying that there is loads of large 'consumer' places like tesco taking over around the UK by opening swarms of large stores i guess. some classic dig at consumerism. sigh.

Comment on the state of the UK economy? I.e. castles built on sand.

Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by twinkle on Aug 25, 2010 11:08:47 GMT 1, I haven't had time to take a look in person but I think it could be cleverly placed. If its on the sea wall then it could well be over looked by the real Hastings Castle, ie in the background.
I think its just a comment on the 'old and the new', with the traditional old world represented by the castle (as it does in the town itself, looking down on the modern sprawl below), and the new commercial world where Tesco basically swallows up every available space, replacing the all the traditional shops and selling just about everything you'll ever need, squeezing out the old,....unfortunately.....

no point in using that as a comeback, its not intending to give a big message like banksy is. The tesco thing just fails IMO

the castle represents the UK with the Uk flag by the looks of it. He must of done it when he was drunk.. far to many mixed messages

Banksy & Eine in Hastings, by nex on Aug 25, 2010 11:28:51 GMT 1, each to his own, but i'll never get bored of attacks on Tesco's in alot of ways they representive of the wonderful effect on society that capitalism has, yes there are lots more unethical firms out there, yes capitalism is inherently unethical, but there aren't many companies in the same league as Tesco's for having crept into the nation's psyche over the last 30 years.
whether you like this piece, are bored by it, or hate it, at least for once we're discussing an image rather than prices, flipping, psychosis, or urban art awards funding

Bet you Tesco sell more of the Banksy dvd then any other outlet though - thus pocketing the Banksy crew the most money.
What would be ironic is if Tesco start having pops at Banksy for commercial exploitation of the movie.

That would be the only sensible assumption to make given your comments. I, on the other hand, like it, esp as it sort of says something about my home town too.
