With the DVD release of 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' in September, do you think that Mr Brainwash's (aka Thierry Guetta) prints will increase in value? 'Too Louis' is the first signed print that I ever bought and it wasn't cheap.

What do you think?

(p.s. Does anybody else own a 'Too Louis' print?)

I paid $180 for my Too Louis, had it for 7 months. I decided that it would not make the wall and sold it for $625 3 months ago.
My Legend (pink) was purchased in the secondary market a year ago for $175. last week someone offered me $1300 for it.
It's one of my favorite prints. I can't let it go.
I think that some of MBW prints will increase. Some by a little margin.
I think that right now all the flippers are keeping the recent prints at cost or below.
Once, if ever, MBW has his London show, the value will increase. As do most artist collection right before and during a show. After the show some drop (Neate) and some do not (Parla).
With all the anti-MBW banter out there, it's still hype for him, which keeps him on the radar.

I don't think the release of the DVD will have much of an impact; as I believe most who will see the film have seen it by now. I have a few MBW prints (Liberty is easily my favorite) and I'm in no rush to sell with the current market. I feel it's cooled off a bit (which is a good thing) so maybe he'll slow down the amount of stuff he releases.

I think it's funny that he said the recent cans were a shelved 2009 print release and then signed them 2010. I'd like to think think if they were a 2009 idea/edition, that they would've been signed as such. Maybe I'm giving MBW too much credit.

I've never purchased a new MBW release to flip.
The LTWT print I'm trying to sell was not purchased. I got mine from MBW for free.
(for waiting a while on a print I did purchase. LTWT came as a gift for waiting in the tube.). I'm not a Hendrix fan, so why would I keep it. Besides, with my Insect, Miss Bugs, Shep, Prefab77, Handiedan, Joe Black, Conor Harrington, Salvador Dali, MBW, and after tomorrow...Judith Supine.(If I'm quick enough.) There isn't much wall space left.

loving that of yours btw, ive been obsessed with Dali since I went to Barcelona and visited his museum/ place of burial... so much amazing art there to see

I purchased it in NYC 12 years ago. At a gallery.
I've heard about the fake ones before, I want to say mine is tHe real thing. COA's were not that important 12 years ago, and I didn't know such a thing was needed(at the time.)
I should look into getting a COA for it.
I was obsessed with Dali and Warhol in high school. Went to the Warhol museum in '94. Went to the Dali museums in Paris, London and Barcelona in 2002. However Barcelona is all about Gaudi, which I fell in love with Gaudis' works while in there.

Yer it was a college art trip so we were checking out the Gaudi stuff too, The gaudi work is insane, some of the buildings make you feel like your in a fairey tail. La sagrada familia is one of the most impressive structures im ever likely to see.

Although we went to Bilbao to see the guggenheim and that is also on another level, especially with the koons dog outside

I can't imagine Mr. Brainwash stuff not dropping in value to about the cost of a colour photocopy. The DVD will only help speed up that process.

Don't get me wrong I think some of the images are nice to look at, but I can't see them having any real, long term value. For a MBW that I liked, I would pay about what I would for a mass produced poster that I liked.

Don't by Dali from an art gallery. Seriously. He is the most overpriced art gallery painter by a country mile - as most people respond to name and his value as an important artist - not realizing his drastic oversupply.

Dali published prints by the THOUSANDS. You should absolutely purchase from the Ebay (with rock solid provenance) or from an auction house - though ironically auction house won't accept a lot of Dali pieces because they fail to bring high prices due to his market being so flooded. (I'm not talking originals, I'm talking lithographs etc.)

MBW fans take note...

Dali churned out massive numbers of prints - lithos usually - in his later years and was a money making machine.

He was so hyped (though deservedly so) that they would have Dali just sit and sign all day blank paper and then print onto it later. (I haven't looked it up for a while, so I could be wrong on this, but I think I've seen an "After Dali" hand signed prints because he signed stacks of litho paper before he died, and then they would print onto it)

That said, there are some works that people payed $5000 for in the 1980s that they would be lucky to get $500 for now. I gave an laymans appraisal on a piece like this once (after some research) and the person didn't even believe me. They were insistent that they bought it from a top gallery for $5000, and didn't want to hear my explanation that the edition size was something ungodly on the piece.

Also, yes there are forgeries out there - but since most Dali work post 1960 was held in such high esteem and had such established collector value - you generally can find pieces from estates with airtight provenance - as it was kept by the owner in a file thinking it was a prized possession.

Also note, this is why you should be very careful of this recent art bubble, as its fed almost entirely by speculative buyers who recognize the collector value of the work and take care of it - hence maintaining a high supply even after demand might peak.

When buying Dali, you want to look for older pieces, with low editions (though editions with Dali can be deceptive as he has so many variations of themes), MUST be certified hand signed at least.

Hand finish really makes a huge difference in price in the Dali market - difference between $500 and $10,000 say - as there is a massive supply of Dali prints but once you start getting into Originals, the prices are so high, that the gradation from print to even minor hand embellishment is drastic.

I don't know a thing content wise about which pieces are particularly valued when it comes to Dali. Clearly I know which Dali museum pieces people value, but with Dali, this could mean the print variations of those high value museum piece are actually cheaper because he targeted his releases based on what the market wished to buy and then would produce high quantities. I'm not saying I know this to be fact, I'm merely saying take this into account, though long term, some of those piece may be good buys now as Asian art markets become more savvy to famous Western artists and some Dali prints can be bought for a lark - though there is no guarantee this will manifest in a future price rise.

I'm not a Dali expert by any means - but I wanted to add this two cents because I have always drawn parallels between Dali and other artists that flood their market.

The point about our current art bubble is spot on, you only have to look at how prices have changed in the last year or 2.... yes most of the stuff on here will be worthless in 10/20 years

MBW is different all together imo, give it 5 years and he will be a distant memory.

If everything does bust then all is good, I will be waiting to pick up a Radar Rat for a few hundred pounds ;D

I have a green one I would sell for that if he is interested still. I was lucky enough to get 2 but the brown one is framed and won't be sold.
