Rene Gagnon πΊπΈ Graffiti Art β’ Painting β’ Art For Sale, by jettad on Oct 17, 2014 16:02:08 GMT 1, "The Giver From Fall River." For me, Rene's work has been up and down. Lately, his stuff hasn't done as much for me (even so, I've purchased a couple of the things in the past year), but I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before it does again. The ups have been way up. I honestly think of them as classics. His "Campbell's Graffiti Soup" is iconic and light years better in conception and execution than alternates from "other" artists. If you compare his print to MBW's, well, there simply is no comparison. Just because his work has not been sold and talked up by the "cognoscenti" in the same way as other's takes nothing away from Rene. Not if you care first about the work. If you care more about what the market likes, well, then that's another much sadder conversation. Also: the printing on Rene's hand-pulled silkscreens is top-notch. Mind blowingly well done. He's a super-talented printer, which for me counts for a lot. An artist who hand pulls his own prints! Imagine that. And the paper he uses is absolutely beautiful. Finally: one thing about Rene that people don't often mention, and that admittedly has nothing to do with his art, is how generous he is. I'll just leave it at that, except to say that the guy has real heart. Rene is an artist that I want to pull for, who I like to support. And for me that counts for a lot. Thanks for that, I couldn't have said that any better and totally agree with everything you said.

Rene Gagnon πΊπΈ Graffiti Art β’ Painting β’ Art For Sale, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2014 19:35:07 GMT 1, posted this over in the Nick Walker thread. One of his images from his new show reminds me of Rene Gagnon's but better executed (not saying he copied him. Just similar idea that reminded me of Gagnon's) You guys and too forgiving, maybe artists that continue to recycle other images from there peers without being called out on it only enables the status quo. People need to be called out on these things, it's not subjective or cool. Using pop art as an influence is one thing taking from a peer is disrespect. TBH, I don't know much about the Nick Walker piece. This is the first I'm seeing of it. If it's a brand new image, then yeah, that's a really s**tty thing to do. But I'm not familiar enough with him to know whether or not it might be a motif he's been doing for a while and the similarities might just be coincidental? anyone know? I wouldn't want to make accusations without knowing all the facts (like some on this very thread have done, accusing Rene Gagnon)

Rene Gagnon πΊπΈ Graffiti Art β’ Painting β’ Art For Sale, by pcant on Nov 11, 2014 18:52:20 GMT 1, Apologies, more than three words:
I got into buying urban art a few years ago, not surprisingly about the time as ETTGS, and at that time, Gagnon was engaged in a mostly one-sided argument with MBW. No one will ever win the "who swiped the soup can from whom" argument, but Gagnon had done a spray can version before MBW picked it up and ran with it. Gagnon eventually released a series of prints taking shots at MBW, including one where he's presented as a "con man."
Much like a rap battle, this kind of "slam someone with your art" thing has always struck me as more entertaining than, say, throwing down in the street. One of the first prints I bought was this, which I still have on the wall and it still makes me smile, knowing the story behind it:

I really have no clue how they haven't sold out. It's astonishing.
